Read this for a book discussion group. It was interesting--at least parts of it were. Some parts were a struggle to get thru. I swear that if I had a nickel for every comma in this book I would be a millionaire!! :) But, as with most books that I feel I struggle to get thru, I'm glad that I read it. I know this is supposed to be a coming of age novel but I'm not sure that Augie ever really made it.

This book is set in the time period of the late twenties to post WW2. Augie March is the middle child of a Jewish mother raising her children alone. Augie is mentored by various people who take him under their wing. Augie describes himself as oppositional but this is only quietly displayed. Augie goes on a series of adventures (like Huck Finn?) and he also could be compared to Tom Jones as he goes through a series of love affairs.
