The second book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. After reading Dark Lover, I hesitated in continuing this series. I wasn't really all that impressed with it. It was just okay. Well, I broke down and grabbed the next two from the library. I must admit I did enjoy the second in the series much more than the first. It's not going on my keeper shelf. It's a library book afterall. lol. But really, I'm glad I read it and I can now appreciate it when people yak about the BDB. I'm not sure how ma ...more

Yet another stand out J.R. Ward novel. This is the story of Rhage, the most handsome and good-looking of the Brothers, and Mary who get dealt a pretty crappy hand of cards, she has cancer and doesn't really believe in miracles anymore. This book for me was very interesting. Because of the cancer, Mary who was never a beauty queen to begin with, really doesn't feel very attractive, she's skinny, and has a lot of scars and doesn't really dress for fashion, she dresses for comfort. So she's shocked Yet another stand out J.R. Ward novel. So she's shocked when she catches Rhage's eye. She thinks it's some kind of joke at first. But it's not. When Rhage looks at Mary he sees only beauty and strength. I loved how J.R. paired Rhage with not only a human woman, but an ordinary looking human woman with cancer. With Rhage being the best looking of all the brothers, you'd expect J.R. to pair him with someone who'd make Angelina Jolie look like Quasimodo in comparison. But she doesn't. Rhage though has his own set of problems, the Scribe Virgin cursed him so that whenever he gets too worked up, he shape shifts into the Beast, which looks like a dragon and will basically kill anything in its path, friend or foe. And there's only two ways to keep the Beast at bay, one is by fighting. And the other is by sex, and lots of it with lots of women. Rhage hates this though and wants nothing more than to settle down or settle down as much as one of these guys can with a female of worth. He hates the constant stream of sex partners and meaningless anonymous sex. So when he meets Mary, he's shocked because she seems to have a calming effect on both him and the beast, but he's also afraid that he might change and hurt Mary. Mary and Rhage had some pretty major hurdles to overcome on their path to love, but they make it. As per the usual with J.R. the romance was flat out excellent. Well written, fantastic interesting characters. Fantastic character growth. And of course a great story. And we also meet one of my most favorite characters in this book, John Matthew. We find out his basic back story, and how he actually comes to the attention of the Brotherhood. And because he goes to live with Tohrment and Wellsie, we get to see the two of them together and we also get to see what an awesome loving relationship they have and I love how Torhment takes JM under his wing and more or less becomes a father to him. The ending of LE ranks as one of my most favorites ever. It's so sweet and will make you sigh, if not tear up a little, and just when you think that Mary and Rhage won't end up together, they do. Rhage really exemplifies selflessness with what he does for Mary, I won't give it away, but trust me it is awesome and really shows you the depth of the love that Rhage has for Mary. And there is one scene with Mary and Rhage, he sleeps in her living room and gets burned by the sun. She finds out what he is, and he expects her to run from him. But she doesn't. She covers up the windows and is willing to help him down to her root celler to keep him out of the sun. And she brings him salve to help heal his burns and the tenderness in that entire scene is heart-touching, and I think that's when they really start to fall for each other. And he is awed by the fact that she's willing to help him in spite of the fact that she's somewhat afraid of him. So to wrap my review up, this is yet another top pick for 2009 and one of my top picks for romance period. Read it. You will not be disappointed. ...more

I honestly do not know why it has taken me so long to pick up this series. I have read Dark lover twice, but until now have failed to read the rest. WHY???? I think these books have received so much hype, that I have been put off. I don't really like reading hyped books as I usually walk away disappointed.

This book was almost a dnf for me. Why? It wasn't Rhage-I loved him and his dragon, it was Mary. I found her to be totally unlikable and wishy washy. In fact, she didn't redeem herself in my eyes until the last 100 pages, and that's a long time to go without liking the heroine. The cancer storyline didn't bother me, but it was just so predictable.

I also have a huge problem with the lessers. They don't scare me, and I don't really see them as a threat to the brotherhood. The evil "i'm out to kil ...more

whew! great book. Rhage seems intensely sexy. (grin) I love how he immediately falls for her and how he tries to keep his dragon from hurting her. That scene in the book where she ties him up and allows the light form of his beast to come out is hot! I also like how calm he becomes around her, and how when his beast comes out when the Lessers attack he listens to her.
