I couldn't fall asleep one night and without even realizing it I was so caught up and enchanted by the story it was six in the morning when I finished the book.
This is a retelling but I'm not familiar with the original tale, so I can't say how close it is to the original. It stands on it's own though and you don't need any prior knowledge of the story to enjoy it.

I am wary of retellings and reimaginings of fairy tales. They are not often done right and usually the authot is purposefully trying to be "edgy" or "cool" or else is just retelling something in a way that's already been done to death (like in the case of Fables).

I'm too old for this version. I'm finding the princesses quite annoying for some reason.

This was more like a 3.5. I enjoyed the way the story explained some of the elements of the story that seemed weird and random before. The characters were also more happily well-rounded than in the fairy tale (of course, that tends to be the case with all novel retellings of fairy tales). I enjoy Jessica Day George so far--her writing is lighthearted and clean, not deep and thoughtful, but fun nonetheless.

Cute, but I've been reading a lot of renditions of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" this year and while I appreciate it's not as "twee" as many of them, it's not as mature as some of the others.
While I liked Galen a lot, his having perfect manners just didn't seem logical for someone who had been a soldier for half his life. ...more
