This is an early Lovecraft short story about a pair of grave robbers who come to regret their theft, not as an act of conscience, but as a result of consequence. I have a hard time generating much sympathy for a pair of grave robbers.
Lovecraft's imagery, pacing, and word choices as always are on full impressive display in this story. However, much of the events transpire offstage, robbing the story of considerable potential dramatic effect. At so few pages, reading it is not a waste of time. But ...more
