AH!!!!!! So fucking awesome!!! This was the perfect follow-up book to Cinder. I loved it more than Cinder. It was so intense and gory and f "I know. AH!!!!!! So fucking awesome!!! This was the perfect follow-up book to Cinder. I loved it more than Cinder. It was so intense and gory and fun and action-packed. Amaaaaaaaazing!!! This is becoming one of my favorite series. I highly recommend it to everyone. It's a MUST-READ.

In Cinder, you follow the fairytale, Cinderella. We meet Prince Kai, Queen Levana, Cinder and many more characters. And though I loved that book, it wasn't as good as this one. In Scarlet, we follow the fairytale, Red Ridinghood. It was very similar in ways, but Meyer also adds her own story to the mix-with enough gore and intensity to keep you turning the pages until your eyes pop out of their sockets. I had so much fun with this book. I'll admit, I started listening to the audio and though I loved Rebecca Soler and how she narrated the story in Cinder and this one, I think I was finding myself a little too distracted. So I broke down and got the book and boy did I read it faster, not able to read fast enough for my liking. But at times she was slow, taking her time. Which is fine, but I liked going at my pace.

So then, it picked up and I couldn't put this down. First of all, I gotta say...I love these covers. LOVE them. Like seriously. They're gorgeous and really fit the stories.

So now, we have Wolf and Scarlet. Scarlet's grandmother is missing, so Scarlet sets out to find her. But along the way, she finds out a lot about herself and where she came from. Wolf is a sexy, swoony, amazing, protective alpha. And damn did I love all the time we got with him. Sure, he was secretive about his part in the missing of Grandmere, but once he came clean, he was great. He did what he had to do to protect Scarlet. At times, I wanted to strangle her, and tell her to listen to Wolf. Okay, so how can you trust someone that lied to you? Well, hell I'd listen to him regardless. It beats the alternative she had. He lied to protect her. He knew how dangerous his pack was and she didn't listen. But then again, she stopped at nothing to save her grandmother as most people probably would. But even when things turned out the way they did, I felt she should just trust him. And oh dear God. The gore in this is craaaazy. I don't mind blood and gore and violence. I love it. It's realistic and I watch it all the time in movies. Hell it's even in real life. But I loved how Meyer was relentless with that part...she really made me feel like there were some real attacks going on. The wolves were fierce and mean and cruel. They didn't give a shit about morals or mercy. They just attacked and ate, like the feral dogs they are. Yikes! I still enjoyed it. I did even more because of all the bloodshed. Wow, that sounds sadistic. Oh well. I loved it. So when Scarlet finally trusts Wolf, I was all excited and giddy and rooting for these two. And when he asked her to be his alpha, I was screaming in joy. Those two were so cute. I could feel their tension burning up the pages. I could feel his wolf instincts kicking in and it was sweet. Love Wolf. He's so...*dreamy sigh*

Then we have Cinder and Kai. Yay! I was so happy Meyer included them still in this book. Cinder grew on me. I loved her chapters. I loved that she seemed to get a little stronger and more badass. But I felt bad for her because of what Kai is having to go through. He's with the evil wench-Queen Levana. She's relentless and wants to become the Empress to Kai's Emperor. Yeah, Kai is the Emperor and she wants to marry him. But of course she has her own motives for that. And one that Cinder had warned Kai about in the first book. But he didn't listen. And now he's screwed. Stuck with this horrible witch. And she's brainwashing him to believe all that Cinder told him or pretended to be was a lie. But he realizes that there's no other way around this. If he doesn't marry Levana, there will be more bloodshed on his hands. He has to stop her from allowing the war to go on-killing innocent people when all she wants is Cinder. But Cinder's missing, they can't find her. So what the hell is he to do? The next best thing, the other thing she wants. To marry her where she'll become the ruler of the union and whatever. I would not wanna be in his position.

However, I loved that Cinder and Scarlet are tied together. Both books were amazing. The writing, the characters, the world-building, the action, the romance. I love it all. I just hope Cinder can get to Kai before he screws them all into the ground, before it's too late. And I hope Wolf and Scarlet remain together in the next book and all is good with them. And they have a bunch of Wolf babies running around...

Sorry, I got carried away there. So anyway, I'm so glad I picked this one up. I'm glad I stopped listening to the audio and got the book. I got a lot more out of it that way.

I also loved Iko and Thorne as secondary characters. I couldn't help but compare Thorne to Kenji from Shatter Me. He was there for comic relief. His sarcasm and wit and charm was admirable and definitely needed for Cinder. But it's what I loved about Kenji. I wonder if I'm the only one that thought that? I still have that book on my mind, I guess. But I enjoyed the stories...interwoven with our beloved fairytales with great action and sweet romance. Such a fun journey. And I can't wait to get on with Cress.

I'm glad I gave this series a chance. I don't normally care to read about cyborgs and robots and stuff. But this one is just the right amount of awesomeness. ...more

I am 110% sure that Scarlet was much better than Cinder could have ever hoped to have been. With Scarlet as our main protagonist, nothing was ever boring. And better yet, I truly identified with Scarlet! I loved her fiery, independent personality, and the way that she wasn't afraid to tell it like it was.

The Plot: I finally finished! I'll try for no spoilers, at least for people who have read Cinder. In the second installment of the Lunar Chronicles, the main character isn't Cinder, which was disappointing at first, but it's all good because the third person POV switched to her pretty often. The plot basically centers on Cinder's struggle to come to terms with her true identity and how Scarlet and her grandmother have a part in Cinder's wh There is a strong possibility of spoilers. Read at risk.

The Plot: I finally finished! I'll try for no spoilers, at least for people who have read Cinder. In the second installment of the Lunar Chronicles, the main character isn't Cinder, which was disappointing at first, but it's all good because the third person POV switched to her pretty often. The plot basically centers on Cinder's struggle to come to terms with her true identity and how Scarlet and her grandmother have a part in Cinder's whole cyborg with no memory situation. It's all quite easy to jump back into actually after reading Cinder. It's very well connected, even if it is really obvious at times. What I thought was new, was the very interesting, completely psychotic take on the Wolf and about Levana's army. That was very twisted, even for a fairy tale retelling. I didn't say it wasn't completely welcome, and awesome though.

The Characters: Cinder we all know is a mechanical version of Cinderella who can pretty much control people with her mind. Prince Kai is an adorable version of Prince Charming. One can only hope they actually ever get a chance to talk with each other. Not the main characters though. Basically, the titular character, Scarlet, is a really feisty version of Little Red Riding Hood with a gun, and a grandmother who was in the military and knows secrets. Secrets that pertain to Cinder, hmm hmm....anyway, Wolf too is a really mysterious and strange character. I don't want to give any spoilers but honestly, his name is a spoiler. Think about that. Finally, my personal favorite was definitely Thorne. I don't know how Cinder managed to pick him up, but he made the whole book three times better with his ridiculous shenanigans.

The Romance: Cinder and Kai are a nonexistent couple right now although their caring for each other over seas was very adorable. The focus was on Scarlet and Wolf as a couple. The most upsetting fact for me about their falling in love (we all know it happens, quit complaining) was that it occurs in nearly 24 hours. How can two people fall in love in one day? Other than that, it was all very touching. Wolf afraid he'll hurt her, by being so big and bad, and poor little Scarlet completely oblivious to her very seductive advances. Seriously, she was no shy girl when it came to romance.

The Style: I love the entire concept of the series. It's just so original. I can't fathom how she came up with a dystopian society, with not-so-princesslike princesses (one who is half metal and one who totes around a gun while looking for her grandmother), and an evil moon queen. The writing is also excellent and the descriptions of the world are amazingly vivid. One could almost be tricked into seeing Lunars left and right.

Overall: If you haven't given Cinder a try, please do. Especially if you like dystopian, science-fiction , romance. It's very fun. And if you have read Cinder, Scarlet is a great follow up and continues the story at a great pace. I loved discovering all sorts of secrets and juicy stuff about Queen Levana's plan, all set against a backdrop of a world we know so well, yet so different.

I am going to make Marissa Meyer my best friend, then have her move in with me, and write stories just for me so I can sit by the fire and read all day every day. Because she is that awesome.

Or is that creepy? Now I feel all stalkerish.

Scarlet....Oh Scarlet was a tender morsel of a book you are.

Before finishing Scarlet I was prepared to rate it four stars because it just wasn't as good as Cinder but that was way before Scarlet's POV within the book got good and by the time I had reached the last few chapters within the book I was hooked. The need to find out what happened overpowered every other need to do anything else whether it be needing to eat, needing to sleep etc. Reading Scarlet was way more important than those things.

I was quite reluctent to read Scarlet to begin with because I wanted to read more about Cinder, I didn't want to read about some girl trying to find her missing Grandmother. Cinder does crop back into Scarlet however and actually the book is split between Scarlet's and Cinder's POV. I was pleased that Cinder comes back very early into the book other wise it probably would be still sitting in my 'currently reading' shelf. If anyone else feels like this then trust me on this Scarlet's life and situation needs to be introduced before it switches back to Cinder.

Scarlet picks up right from where Cinder finishes which I hadn't expected so fear not people the story carries on and new characters are introduced. We have Thorne who talks to ships and the mysterious Wolf which I can't really say much about other than my theories were in some way confirmed. Then again if I had read The Queen's Army before reading scarlet like I was suppose to I would already know about Wolf and wouldn't need to speculate. There's a lot more danger within Scarlet and it was more fast paced once Scarlet's introduction was out the way. I admit to not really caring about her missing Grandmother but actually felt quite sad when Scarlet did locate her Grandmother. Poor, poor old person.

So overall Scarlet was very good and did actually consume my thoughts with me constantly thinking about what would happen and who Dr Erland was and how he fitted into the story. So for that alone it gets a five star rating from me because Meyer is just too good. I can't wait to read Cress now and find out what happens next. ...more

Marissa Meyer never ceases to amaze. I was stupefied. Really. The way the two characters tie together was beautifully done. I was okay with there being little Cinder-Kai action: they were able to be seen as two characters separate from each other who made decisions independent of what the other was doing (although in Kai's case, not so much). I started this is April but never got past the first three or four chapters (not the books fault, I went on a non-reading kick) picked it back up last night and finished it all. I really do love this series because, yeah, it's fairy tale based, clearly, but the way it is done is so inventive and interesting that you don't need to be a fairy tale retelling junkie like myself to enjoy it. What can I say....I love how the story is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood AND merge with Cinder's story later on. Its kinda cool. I actually like the relationship between Scarlet and Wolf more than did for Cinder and Kai.

Seeing that the story already have to fairytales merge together, I wonder how the 3rd book which brings Rapunzel into the picture. I absolutely love Rapunzel, so I hope the story would be nice and will not destroy the character. Looking forward to read the next book~ ...more

Overall, I liked this book a little less. Which is odd. Not sure if it was the audiobook narrator that turned me off Scarlet's character. I also had a difficult time connecting to Scarlet and Wolf's romance.

But oh, Captain Throne, how I have missed you.
