Hi, Kate! I just have to say that your Borgia Chronicles are two of my favorite books, and I'm reading the Mistress of Rome series now. So far, I'm enjoying it! My question for you is how do you decide you've done enough research and you need to start writing? In general, how do you balance writing historical context with plot? Thank you!

Kate Quinn So glad you've enjoyed my books! As for research, it's always a tough moment to decide, the "when do I know enough to start?" question. Because if you aren't careful, you can put that moment off forever and just keep researching, researching, researching. It usually comes when I can look through my notes and think about starting, whether I have the groundwork to start, and that thought is not an absolute horror show but only a SLIGHT horror show. Then I start. :)

Plot and historical context are always a balancing act--because I have to follow history, but I also have to tell a good story. So it's a matter of threading the plot arc through the historical facts in a way that can be true to both.
