Hal Rappaport asked Lev Grossman:

Hi Lev, more than any of your colleagues, your characters are so realistic. Do you draw from people you know? Also, on a separate topic, any tips on writers block?

Lev Grossman I try not to draw from people I know, other than myself. But they creep in there. You know how people are. Janet has traces of real-world people, from high school and college ... it's hard to keep them out completely.

re: writers block, usually if I'm banging my head against a wall it's because I'm overthinking things -- looking for a complex answer to a simple problem. Writing is hard, but it's not hard _in_that_way_: it's not neurosurgery. Answers tend to be, if not right in front of you, then somewhere within arm's reach.
