Do you outline your books? If so, how? How did you get the idea for nyxia and how it works, and how did you decide how to give nyxia its name? Also, you came to my school, and I'd just like to say that your book was really good, and your talk really motivated me to continue to write and get better at it. :)

Hi Katherine,
I'm so thrilled to hear that the talk was good motivation for you. That's the kind of thing I needed to hear when I was a young writer, so I'm thrilled that it worked for you!
I do not outline my books too much. I usually have a handful of "touchstones" in mind-- so I'm trying to hit certain scenes and plot points, but I have no idea how my characters will get there. I do know other people who plan out their stories much more rigorously.
Nyxia was all about coming up with a material that's worth traveling across the universe to go get. I also just like the concept of possibility, and having Emmett with new "possibilities" at his fingertips was a lot of fun.
Nyxia's name is mostly inspired by the material "onyx". They look pretty similar in their resting, unmined form-- but I did want something that was prettier sounding than onyx, with an almost luring kind of personality to it. Nyxia was an easy choice, and one of the few names in the book that never really changed.

I absolutely loved the Nyxia Triad and I wish I could reread them for the first time again! You wrote the books so wonderfully and I was wondering have you ever thought about turning them maybe into a movie series or even a TV show? I do know that making books into something for the screen is very hard but I think these books would look absolutely amazing on the big screen!!
