About a comment below concerning books for Young Readers or books labeled "YA": I recently read "A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue". I don't recall if it had any foul language, but there was much sex (and the two lead characters, both male, had a thing going....with each other.) And the violence in YA books is stupendous, like the Hunger Games trilogy, and I don't read that kind of work as an adult! Thoughts?

Urcelia Teixeira Hi Greg,

You are 100% correct in that the violence and sexual provocation is ridiculous in some of these books. Technically, according to Amazon, YA’s age group is from 13-17 years of age. (See this link )

Now I have a stepdaughter, aged 18, a teenage son aged 13, another age 10 (and an even younger one age 5) and I can tell you that there is no way I would let my 13-year old read many of the YA books advertised on Amazon. Not because I’m a prude or over protected mother, but because I believe it’s morally wrong to expose children this young to books that condone violence and sex before marriage.
So, in my opinion, the grey area lies in what I construe to be explicit vs content that eludes to violence and sex etc. It’s a tough one. Because selling books is a business and to some, business no matter the cost.

I have my personal test that I conduct with my books before I publish them. Of course I get my husband’s opinion on whether the content is appropriate, but I also ask my own children. If they (or I !) get embarrassed when I read it to them, then I have my answer! :-)
