Darryl asked Michael Finkel:

Discussing "The Stranger..." for book club tonight. One aspect that stands out for me is that Knight's family (seemed to) hold such sway over him. As exampled in your last meeting - he was almosted terrified that his brother would see him with you.... do you believe that there really was no history of emotional (or physical) abuse? I'm convinced that something very odd was happening...Thanks for the entertaining read.

Michael Finkel I appreciate you selecting "Stranger" for your book club. Certainty, Knight's family is unusual. I have no evidence of any family abuse, so I can't comment with any certitude, but you are correct that Knight seemed to be quite fearful of his family's opinion. Then again, since he departed the world when he was scarcely out of his teen years, in some ways Knight retains the emotional composition of a teenager.
