Dear Erna,
I'm not one for sequels. I argue all the time with my sons as I think the first Star Wars movie was perfect and required no sequels or prequels. I hope I have other stories to tell and so I leave the Major and his wife to enjoy their family and privacy. But yes, little George would be fourteen this year. I hope he's thriving and enjoying the Major as an unconventional Great Uncle. Best wishes, Helen S.

I am am English Lit buff (love that your influences are my faves) but just started to read "The Summer Before the War" because the title attracted me. I almost never read contemporary authors, (my cutoff is the Second World War), because your wonderful style takes me right back to the writers of the early twentieth century, I am thoroughly enjoying the experience... How do you manage to stay so true to the times?

Now for the real question: I could see Jane Austen's influence in The Last Days of Summer. The descriptions of the country setting and much of the dialogue made me think of Persuasion. Did you have a particular Austen novel influence your work for The Last Days of Summer?
