I would say yes. This is a sequel series and there are many events that happen in Shades of Magic that are referenced or directly impact plot points in Threads of Power. The book assumes you have already read Shades of Magic and many things will not make any sense if you read this one first.

Theoretically, you could start with this book. However, I highly recommend reading the Shades of Magic series to fully grasp the details of what is happening in this book. The reading is so much more rewarding with the full backstory.

I accidentally read it without realizing there was a first trilogy. No issues, it was actually really interesting this way! Of course, some of the mysteries were not revealed in a nice package at the end (because they had entire books on them already released lol) but it was very obviously left open for a sequel so I just figured they would tie up those storylines later.
