And there are many useful life lessons, from scrounging a meal from a nearly-bare cupboard, to taking care of a horse, investigating a suspicious document, or being a good friend.

So, back in high school I desperately wanted to go to Yale but I didn't get accepted... and this book made me feel a LOT better about that. That being said, the book itself is super enjoyable. I was kind of ready to be mad at it for various reasons, like I didn't really want it to be a murder mystery, or the first in a series, or have upsetting scenes of sexual assault, but it handles all those things in such an organic way that I was completely won over....more

Ultimately I was satisfied with how things turned out, and the writing is really lovely. I will say though that if I had to hear ONE MORE person tell a newly-arrived character about the ESSEX SERPENT I was going to have to drown one of us in THE BLACKWATER. Major kudos to the audiobook reader, Juanita McMahon--her acting in this production was phenomenal. And finally, I will also say that this book contains what is probably one of my favorite descriptions ever of jerking off....more
