Unlike a lot of reviews here I really enjoyed this book and found it a quick read. It may not be what many people expected it to be. It's not a redemption arc for president snow, or a hardcore villain origin story. Instead it's a portrait of a young man slowly falling down into questionable and then immoral, vile behaviour. I felt it portrayed this journey very well, as well as showcasing all the influences that made him turn this way. You don't feel for him, but you get to understand why he turned out like how he is in the hunger games. There were some thought-provoking points and questions about (im)morality and society. The nods to the later trilogy were fun and interesting. All in all I found it to be enjoyable....more

I feel so much love for it. The details are mesmerising, the drawings and the different handwritings. It makes me think Tolkien must have been a warm and dedicated father, writing to his children every year. The stories are lovely, adventurous but very fit for kids. North polar bear is great. I like that there's some social commentary as well, on poverty and the war. A great book and a perfect read for this time of year, for both children and adults!...more

Jeanette Winterson has a great writing style and writes very interesting stories. I loved the balance between the stories, some ghost stories (which were pretty creepy!), some magical realism and some moving stories about being human. The recipes gave us some personal insights into Winterson's life, habits and youth, which was very interesting as well. 4.5 stars...more

Shirley Jackson's writing style is beautiful, especially in the first paragraph of this book. The story is very good, the horror is mainly psychological which only adds to the creepiness of it all. The characters were interesting, the fact that you didn't fully got to know their backgrounds really added to the atmosphere of the book.
2024: 5 stars - still a great book, I've found more nuances that I didn't notice the last time. Also, Mike Flanagan did a great job with his Netflix series, I noticed many parallels and origins in the book....more

The concept was good, the topics important. I appreciated Collins killing of some of the major, mst sympathetic characters. That made it realistic (albeit heartbreaking). But some parts felt too rushed, others too long. I'm not sure if this book should have been longer, or that some parts could have been a little shorter and others longer. Still a good book and again, interesting still after a re-read. 4 stars....more

I can't explain very well why I love them so much, I just do. The writing style is mesmerizing, the subject and idea are so very interesting. This book especially had very good representation, lots of women (unlike my last read), people of colour and lgbt characters. Which should be pretty normal, but so many writers write about white cishet people. So bonus points for that.
Area X is fascinating, even though Acceptance doesn't solve everything for me. But that's kind of what I like about it too. I loved reading the many different perspectives, especially Saul's. All in all, The Southern Reach Trilogy has become one of my favourite series....more
