I was no longer a child willing to drift with the tide - I would steer against the current if I had to. And if I won, by some stroke of luck, I would never be helpless again.
If you enjoy the xianxia genre you’ll likely love this.
A young girl with hidden power fighting for her mother's freedom, romantic entanglements oddly reminiscent of Red Queen, and a fantastical, folklore-inspired world combine to make a familiar but still entertaining tale.
The heroine is likable, though she does feel decidedly young given her little experience with the outside world. So, in my opinion, this leans more YA. I see the Adult tag along with the YA one but I'd say this is YA. The world-building and visuals were lush and detailed - evoking a sense of familiarity in anyone who had ever seen a fantasy Chinese drama. I enjoyed most of all the side characters but found myself once again falling for the villain. Though that comes as no surprise given my love for the morally grey.
At times the story could feel a touch predictable, but that could honestly be said about a lot of YA. Still, overall, I enjoyed it. The book doesn't end in a cliffhanger so you're not left reeling as to what will happen next, but it is clear there is more story to tell. The fates of certain characters and some unresolved issues leave you just curious enough to tune in for more. And I, for one, certainly will.

Two down on their luck twins, who are about to age out of the horrid foster care system, find themselves thrust into a world they never knew existed and that weren't already enough they discover not only are they Fae but they're the rightful blood heirs to the throne. But the current Heirs, children for the Council who have been ruling for the past two decades in the royal family's absence, are not about to give up the positions they've come to recognize as their own.
And so, they do everything in their power to make the girls lives a living hell. Fortunately, they girls aren't about to give up without a fight. They may not want the throne, but they'll fight for their right to stay in a world where they, at last, feel at home. However, the boys aren't the only ones who might be out for their heads.
Because apparently there is a greater threat looming, one that threatens not only them but all of Fae existence. The Nymphs. Creatures with no true power of their own, except the ability to steal that of their Fae counterparts.
The Characters:
Tory - The Bold Twin She takes no shit from anymore. Beautiful, snarky, confident, she never shows fear, constantly butting heads and going toe to toe with the Heirs despite knowing the risk.
Darcy The younger of the two, I'm not quite sure how to label her. She's definitely more tame than Tory that's for sure. But living their life they both have, she is perfectly capable of taking care of herself as well.
Darius - King of the School Our not so friendly resident dragon and leader of the asshole heirs. Powerful, cocky, mysterious and yet also just certifiable dickhead. He torments and humiliates the girls, especially Tory, from day one.
Caleb - Top Vamp He legit takes a bite out of our girl Tory the moment she and Darcy arrive at the school. Less of a dick than his friends, though that's not saying much, he is still power obsessed and possessive, laying claim to Tory as his source despite her protests.
Seth - Alpha Wolf Overly-touchy feeling, manipulative prick. He pretends to be care about Darcy at a point, but it proves to be an absolute sham and hope he gets stuck with a silver dagger. Even though I know he won't and I'm not even sure if that's the rule in this world. But hey it is for most werewolves so I am going with it.
Max - The Siren In this world, I guess men can be sirens too. Thief of emotions, memories and secrets, he much like Darius places a key role in tormenting Tory. And since I'm writing this review while being half-way through the second book it pisses me off that given he is hiding a massive secret himself he would use others weakness' against them. Basically, like the others, he sucks.
Orion - Professor Vamp The one who brings the girls into the world of Fae, yet also doesn't approve of their claim to their throne. Which begs the question, who the hell sent this guy to find them? And also, how the hell do they choose teachers at this school? This is Hogwarts level bullshit right here.
The Relationships
Darius & Tory The antagonism between these two is palpable. But so is the chemistry. It's like back and forth between whether they will set each other on fire or set fire to some sheets. That being said, the way this book ended definitely put on douse of any potential of the latter. At least for a while, because the boy is going to need to put lot of effort into making it up to Tory and hopefully do a lot of begging. I WANT HIM TO GROVEL.
Caleb & Tory Sorry to those who do not like love triangles, this is happening. Much like Darius and Tory, I see the chemistry there. It is not quite as flammable, but its still hot. And unlike in the former case, these two allow themselves a tantalizing taste. But as with the case with Daruis, Caleb blows it all to hell with his actions, or really inaction at the end of this book.
Orion & Darcy Sadly, for some reason, Darcy has a major crush on this poor excuse for a teacher. She does not share this information with anyone, not even Tory, but its pretty obvious. Of course teacher student relationships are strictly forbidden, but I think we all know where this is headed.
Anyways this book was highly addicting, despite a lot of the characters being downright manipulative and toxic. It's kind of like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars or 90210 in that the characters are not really the best of people, but you stick around because you're addicted to the drama....more

And for the first time, I can honestly say while there was a love triangle I was not mad at it. Neither one of the men was made out to be a villain or had their character destroyed simply to facilitate the other's relationship with the heroine, and I appreciated that.

Bloody, magical, monstrous, romantic and utterly heartbreaking. This book takes everything we loved from the first book and elevates it. All the stakes are raised, relationships are tested, secrets revealed, And, we are forever reminded that the demons of our pasts never truly stay buried.
The book was well-paced and beautifully written, pushing the borders of right and wrong, with almost all sides coming out looking pretty gray.
How I felt throughout this entire book
The Relationships
Rook & Henrietta You know what I think my problem with Rook as a love interest is? He's got absolutely no personality! Like all we know about him is that he's Henrietta's childhood friend; he's handsome, supposedly nice and he'll basically do whatever Henrietta wants him to. Rook gets zero character development, so he was about as interesting as a cardboard cutout. The only interesting thing about him is the darkness taking over him, but we did not see much of that. Other than him constantly having to take medication for it, and Henrietta saying how worried she was about him. It was basically the same scene on replay every time.
We are constantly told by Henrietta how much she loves Rook, but I never really feel it. And every time it comes up, she basically just mentions how they've always been to together. I don't think that is reason enough to be in love with someone.
Magnus & Howel From beginning to end, Magnus clearly still has feelings for Howel. And while they do have their moments, it is quite clear that Howel no longer sees him as a viable option. She still cares for him deeply, but with everything going on around her, Howel makes it clear that she just wants him as a friend. And Magnus truly does everything he can to respect that, even if it wounds him so.
Henrietta & Maria Almost from the moment they met, these two just clicked. They obviously recognized something in each other and there was an easy camaraderie. When all Henrietta secrets began were bursting at the seems, Maria is the person she turned to. She trusted her above everyone else. By books end, it was clear these two were going to take their world by storm.
Blackwood & Howel "I don't have to tell you all the secrets," I said primly, fluffing my skirt. "Pity. I'd like to know them." Little did I know, this was foreshadowing for their relationship for almost the entirety of the book. I kid you not.
At the start of the book, it seemed as though they were in a great place, they depended on and trusted each other. Without thinking, I rested my hand on top of Blackwood's. He slipped his fingers through mine for an instant. --- "Heavens, imagine what a lost lamb I would be without a strong young man guiding me, I muttered. "I always pictured you as more of a kid goat," Blackwood said. "Always butting heads." Despite everything going on, I couldn't help but smile. --- "How did you know I'd be reading in here?" I immediately snatched up some of the gingerbread. "You always read in the evenings. I know you too well." "Oh? I must be very dull." Blackwood considered this a moment. "No. I believe I like anticipating you." "Am I that easy to predict?" I blew on the chocolate and sipped. "I like a good routine."
But as the book progressed it was obvious that Henrietta still clearly had major trust issues. Once again Henrietta's lies and secrets piled up, one after the other, and this was obviously a huge strain on their relationship. And is the cause of many misunderstandings between them. Even still, it struck me as almost absurd that Henrietta never truly acknowledges or understands how much Blackwood loves her. "When I had your friendship, I thought I could never want for anything more. But over time, I have come to feel for you beyond anything I thought I could." --- "I would do most anything to make you happy, Howel, if you'd let me. I would become your servant, lay whatever you wanted at your feet."
At the end, even after everything they went through she still questioned his intentions, thinking he was keeping secrets to hold on to his power.
When really, it seems, all he cares to hold onto is her. Like girl, this man would die for you, stop being so blind.
But despite it all I still love them. These two are everything. Blackwood is so irrevocably in love with Howel. "Despite everything - your lies, your wounds, I cannot help but love you. I'm helpless against it." And while she may try to deny it, in the deepest parts of her soul I think a part of her loves him too. Destiny lay in his touch as he cupped a cool hand under my chin. Something dark that slept inside me stirred, opened one eye. It was as though a secret part of my soul had been designed for his.

“You don't cry when someone pushes you down. You get up. You get up and you fight back. And pretty soon nobody's going to shove you anymore because they'll see it's not worth it.
Relationships Reactions Magnus & Cleo Magnus had come to a horrible realization. One that he knew would cause him nothing but pain and suffering from that day forward. But there was no changing the truth of it. He had fallen in love with her. --- “You want to know why I did what I did?" His dark brows drew together as if he were only now allowing himself to consider this question. "Its fairly simple, actually. It's because, without your bravery in the face of all that's happened to you, without your constant scheming behind my back, without that fire of hatred and contempt and hope in your eyes when you look at me..." He hissed out a breath. "In the shadow my father has cast over my entire life, you are the only light I can see anymore. And, whatever the cost, I refuse to let that light be extinguished. --- “It was desperate, this kiss. Violent, even. But of course it was. It had been building up between them for such a long time, as the battle about this boy who had destroyed her life had raged inside her. This boy who had saved her life, who was cruel and kind, strong and weak. Who was selfish and selfless all at once. This was the boy who now kissed her without reservation, as if he were dying and she was air itself.
Jonas & Cleo
I mean he is a rather incapable rebel but at least he's loyal to Cleo? Well expect you know kissing other girls, but hey no one this series had been all that monogamous.
Lucia & Alexius
Before there was Lysandra, Lucia was undoubtedly my least favorite character. Now it's probably a tie, so it should come as no surprise that any ship with Lucia in it is a fail for me.
Jonas & Lysandra
I literally give zero shits about Lysandra, or anything she has to say about anything or anyone
I do not know why I don't manage to like any female character in this series besides Cleo, and even her decisions sometimes have me rolling my eyes. I mean I also like Nerissa, but she's not a main female character.

“Evil is a choice one makes, not a natural state of being.
Let me begin by saying, while I did very much enjoy this book, it moved far slower than its predecessor.
Characters I continue to like: Magnus and Cleo. Also, I love how sassy they are to each other. Cleo Sass: "Such belligerence, princess. Whatever have I done to deserve this today?" "You're breathing." Magnus Sass: "I know very well what it's like to lose a parent in a tragic way." "Oh yes, we have so much in common. Maybe we should get married." --- "No wonder your heart is forged of ice." "Before, you said I had no heart. This is definite progress Princess."
Characters I am starting grow tired of: Jonas and all his failed plans Characters who annoy me so much my eyes roll every time their names appear before a chapter: Lucia and Lysandra Character I am indifferent about: Alexius
This book does not offer too much in terms character development, minus perhaps Magnus. But it does however expand our cast of characters far beyond what I'd originally anticipated. And we do get some relationship development, though not nearly enough to my liking.

We reunite with the sisters sometime after the events of Beltane. And as expected none of the sisters are quite the same. Mirabella who is out for revenge, Arisone who has now discovered her deadly gift and Katharine who is essentially back from the dead, and as usual, nothing is as it seems.
My sister rankings: Katharine Arsinoe > Mirabella I know, I know, it's crazy that after all my Katharine cheerleading I have actually come to like Arsinoe quite a bit. And while Mirabella is still my least favorite, I don't detest her as I did before. Crazy right?
The Sister as GIFs Katharine:
Arsione:
Mirabella when she starts finally starts to realize the truth...
Relationships: Billy & Arsione From strangers to friends, to lovers, these two are basically relationships goals. "Are you worried I'll like them better than I like you?" "That's not possible." "Why? Because you're so irresistible?" "No. Because you don't like anyone." Arsione snorts. "I do like you, Junior." "Oh?" "But I have more important things to think about right now." Honestly, I love their banter and conversations. Their moments together are often brief, but they're always worth it. They clearly love each other, but their romance in no way stands in the way of them doing what is needed of them. "No matter how far I go, I'm still your person. We stand together now."
This is basically the line that stole my heart, though there are plenty of others, and made me truly fall for Billy. He is the only love interest, at this point, whom I absolutely adore. He is loyal and his feelings unwavering. The same can also be said for Arsione. There were moments where I feared she'd misunderstand him, but thankfully I was proven wrong. These two not only love each other, but they also trust each other and that is just so important.
Pietyr & Katharine "He does not love you like I do. He cannot." "And how do you know, Pietyr?" Katharine asks, leaning so close that he must feel her breath against his ear. "What must he do to prove he does? Must he throw me down into the Breccia Domain?
These two have a very tenuous relationship at this point. Pietyr, despite his rather unforgivable actions in the previous book, is determined to prove to Katharine that he truly loves her. And Katharine, though she denies it, has never truly stopped loving him. Because only a fool in love would see any logic in his absolutely absurd reason for his actions. She wants to hurt him, to see his discomfort and jealousy at her actions. "Will you try to put your knife in his back?" Katharine counters, but Nicholas only laughs. "Of course not, my sweet," he says. "When I kill a man, I look into his eyes." Katharine forces a smile. Of course he is joking. He must be. No one must ever be allowed to harm Pietyr. No one but her. But if anything, this just proves that he still holds her heart. And at the end, it appears all of Pietyr declarations are true because he stands by her even after the horrid truth of her gift manifests itself. It seems this time Pietyr has strapped himself in for the long-hull and is ready to be the ride or die guy that Katharine needs. So I guess we'll see how this goes.
Honestly, I was quite worried when the announcement of two more books, since this was originally supposed to be a duology, because I feared this would start to drag. But I am satisfied with the overall pacing of this book. And I think it left us with a lot of mysteries and questions that still need to be answered. So I am definitely looking forward to more history/lore regarding the island and how it will draw the sisters back together again, especially with how this book ended.
All-in-all a solid read, I can't wait to see what happens next!...more

Shall I describe the characters in the format of the book sleeves?
Leda Cole is a recovering drug addict. Who is as addicted to stalking Atlas Fuller as she is to getting high. I kid you not. She is a control freak, and honestly one of the most least likeable characters I have read to date. (view spoiler)[ Basically it is a damn shame she didn't fall off the rooftop because by god I would have celebrated it (hide spoiler)]
Eris Dodd-Radson is the girl with the perfect life, until she isn't. She is exactly what you imagine rich superficial girls are like. Her main saving grace is that she is not Leda lol
Rylin Myers is a girl from the lower floor who falls in love with a rich boy. I know, I know cliche, but honestly for me it was one of the highlights of this book.
Watt Bakradi is a tech-genius, harboring a secret, illegal computer in his head. Yup, you read that right. And he is the poor guy who falls for rich girl Avery, while also, initially unknowingly, working for her psycho ex-bestfriend.
Avery is, well, Avery Fuller. The biggest Mary Sue character I have read in a while. She is beautiful and smart and cool and deep and romantic and omg what is she thinking; she is just so amazing blah blah blah. Basically, she is perfect except for one forbidden flaw. She is in love with her "brother" Atlas.
Relationships:
Avery and Atlas - For a forbidden adopted siblings romance, I found this rather dull. Like if you couldn't guess this from a mile away, and that the feelings were mutual then clearly who haven't read this type of story before.
Rylin and Cord - The ONLY relationship I actually cared about, rooted for or felt any real emotion for. Sure you knew from the get go that these two would eventually get together, but who cares. Let them heal each other's brokenness. I ship them! I liked Rylin, and I really liked Cord. Man, I hope we get more Cord in the next book! I want to read chapters from his perspective in the next book and learn more about him. Because honestly, he was my favorite character.
Avery and Leda - These two are literally the worst best friends ever. Like, imagine if in Gossip Girl rather than Serena and Blair being best friends they made Serena and Georgia best-friends. Two messed up people do not do well together in the long-term.
Eris and Avery - I'd say these two are pretty Serena and Blair-esque
Eris and Mariel - I did not really care about this relationship at all. It felt rather random and tacked on. I saw no reason why Mariel stuck around after how Eris treated her. But it looks like we will be getting more Mariel in the next book (view spoiler)[ since she is determined to solve the mystery of Eris' death, though with absolutely no resources I am curious about how she will manage. (hide spoiler)].
Random note: What is with the names, particularly the guy names, in this book? Atlas? Cord? Brice? Were you just walking around an old house looking for objects to name people after? Lol
Now after reading the book, I completely understand the comparisons between Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars (though this is based on my experience with the shows rather than the books). And I can honestly say if you do not like either of those series, walk away now because this book likely isn't for you.
Given how much I did not like, or did not care about many of the characters, it is a wonder I enjoyed this book so much. I finished the book in a day because honestly it was a guilty pleasure. I think that is in part because it was well written, but again also in part to the fact that it is oddly addicting. Much like the Gossip Girl TV show, you do not watch it for good wholesome family values and characters who act/think logically. You stick around to see if the crazy cast of characters ever get their lives together and if the relationships you want to work out ever do....more

This was a rather quick and pleasant read.
The story takes place in an alternate world where humans and immortals (demons, ogres, vampires etc.) co-exist. And there exists another group, the Valkyries, who were chosen by the gods to play grim reaper to the immortals.
The book puts into question the idea of destiny or pre-determined fate versus our free will to choose. If one decision can change the course of history, is that because it was always meant to happen or because that very action went against the greater plan? Thus altering its course. A rather interesting question really. And one that we continue to question from beginning to end.
Overall, the book was well-paced and overall decently written, though with this being an ARC there were some obvious errors here and there. But I am certain those will all be fixed in the final edition. I do wish there was a little more world-building, however, there was certainly enough for me to grasp the overall setting of the story.
The Cast Malin is a smart, stubborn, kick-ass Valkyrie, with some rather serious emotional issues. Her childhood was not a normal one, growing up with her mother, a fellow Valkyrie, who taught her daughter survival, but rarely showed her love.
Asher is the son of a fallen Valkyrie out to avenge his mother. He is strong, kind, patient and honestly just a precious cinnamon roll.
Quinn is Malin's ex-girlfriend and a fellow Valkyrie. She is beautiful, relentless, caring and overall a sweetheart. And unlike what the synopsis might lead to believe she fighting for the same side as Malin and Asher, even if there may a conflict in terms of their relationships with Malin.
Oona, Malin's best friend and a witch in training, is intelligent, hardworking, caring and loveable. She is honestly, the sort of ride-or-die best friend everyone needs.
The Relationships So I guess I should warn those with an aversion to love triangles that there is somewhat of a love triangle in play here.
Quinn & Malin These two dated a while back, and as we're told it is hot, intense and consuming until of course, Malin breaks it off. Malin admits that Quinn made her feel great, she also knowledges that Quinn, at many times, was too much. Demanded too much of her, wanted more than she was willing to give and that often times after being with Quinn she felt drained. While they do share a few intense moments and a few kisses throughout the book, it honestly felt that this relationship belonged in the past. And though Malin wasn't fully aware of her feelings, for the most part, I believe she felt the same way.
Asher & Malin Their first meeting was, of course, a little rocky, given that Asher broke into Malin's apartment in search of her mother, who was indirectly responsible for the murder of his mother. But after coming to an understanding, these two become fast friends. And then, they develop into something more. Malin is someone who always seems ready to run, to hightail it out of a complicated situation and push people away. But with Asher, it is different, because, in addition to being kind, he is always very patient with Malin. He doesn't ask anything of her that she herself isn't willing to give. He is always there, to support and protect her if she needs it. Even though he knows Malin is fully capable of taking care of herself. With Asher, it seems Malin is willing to lay down her armor, if only a little, and at her most vulnerable, he makes her feel safe.

I fell fast and hard for this book. It is an absolute delight!
Let me start by saying I do not like Romeo and Juliet, I detest it really. Perhaps it is because I read it in high school, or I was not a fan of Shakespearean language at the time, or perhaps it was because I found the so called "great love story" of Romeo and Juliet utterly ridiculous and eye-rolling. Honestly, even thinking of their story now just annoys me to no end. Fortunately, for me I am not stuck with that wretched pair and their wantonness again.
This is the story of Benvolio and Rosaline. Romeo's and Juliet's much more sensible, and more entertaining, cousins. Beautifully written, well-paced and engaging, this book is a delightful gem.
Rosaline is an intelligent, reasonable, caring, beautiful, witty young woman. I liked her nearly from the moment she was introduced. She is not engrossed in the endless drama that is her Capulet family. Technically, if following her father's house, she is House of Tirmino. But she does have Capulet blood, though she'd readily relinquish the name. Unlike Juliet, Rosaline is given depth, character, we as readers get to know her, understand her and her relationships with those her around her. Which is why I care so much more for her than I ever did Juliet. Because she feels real.
Benvolio is a strong, wise, patient, mild-mannered, handsome, witty young man. Sound a bit familiar? While I should hope so because he and Rosaline are far more similar than they are different. And both truly are foils to their overly-rash kin. Benvolio is a honorable gentlemen, he protects and defends what is right even against his own kinsmen. He is funny and clever, and it doesn't take much to fall for his character. Who honestly, makes Romeo look like childish, love-sick fool. More so than he already did. Again, I found myself caring about Benvolio because he actually had some character. So thank you Benvolio for not being a hopelessly ridiculous romantic to the point that it blinded you beyond reason.
Livia is Rosaline's beautiful, gentle, flirty younger sister. She does not much for the plot, but plays a huge role in the end. Thank goodness, she was not at naive as I thought she'd be. She proved that even those in love do not have to be blind to the truth. That even in love you must recognize right from wrong. So bless you Livia for not being the naive fool I thought you would be.
The story picks up not too long after the death's of Romeo and Juliet. The tensions between their families still rather unchecked, despite the Prince's efforts in ensuring that both Houses promised peace. But naturally, when hated runs as deep as with the Montagues and the Capulets you know that is next to impossible. So the Prince hatches another plan in the hopes of saving his city from near civil war. He decides to make the House of Montague and the House of Capulet one.
But of course Rosaline with Benvolio's engagement does not go smoothly. And the bodies to continue to pile up. The two then put aside their differences and set out to find out who been stirring the bad blood between their families, all while growing closer in the process. I must say it took me a while to figure it out, which is good because I quite enjoy a good mystery. Anyways, things take a turn for the worst when Benvolio is framed for murder and Rosaline chooses to flee the city with him in the hopes of clearing his name. What ensues is an life-changing adventure, an entertaining mystery, and a subtle love story.
Together these two save their city from the brink of war, and I could not admire them more for it.
This was just a quick and pleasant read. Even for those who do not like Romeo and Juliet, like myself. I say give this a try. It is lovely....more

There dark sisters all fair to be seen, two to devour and one to be Queen.
Devoured this book so easily. Honestly, I've been on such a winning streak with books lately. And this book is no different.
As mentioned in the summary, the book follows the tale of three sisters raised apart with the sole purpose of the killing the others in order to claim the throne. It is a complicated, dark and deadly journey for these sisters as they try to navigate this timeless island tradition. But as always nothing and no one is as they seem. Loyalties will be tested. The twists and turns will have you questioning everything, but just remember nothing and no one is safe.
My sister rankings: Katharine > Arsinoe > Mirabella
Katharine: Sweet, shy, playful and a bit childish - Katharine is the youngest among the sisters. Backed by the Arrons, a family with an old powerful poisoner bloodline, she seems to have everything going for her. Except that she is a poisoner queen who cannot seem handle poisons the way a true poisoner should. (view spoiler)[ Which given the ending, makes sense because she is likely not a poisoner after all. (hide spoiler)] To be honest, she is quite trusting of those around her, but by this story's end a startling betrayal leaves her cold and has her ready seek vengeance on those who have wronged her.
Arsinoe: Brave, stubborn and loyal Arisone is the middle sister. She lives with the Milones, who, unlike the backers for her sisters, do not have much to offer in terms of material wealth. Even so, she grows up happy and rather carefree with her friends. But she also grows up powerless. Or so it would seem. (view spoiler)[ But by some twist of fate, it appears she is, in fact, the true poisoner queen, which puts everything into question. How could the families have mixed up the children? Does this mean Katharine is, in fact, the true naturalist queen? Will her foster family and her people except her once they find out? Or is their drive to have a naturalist queen going to pull their support away from her? (hide spoiler)] Turns out Arsinoe is not quite who she or anyone else thought she was. Now it is all a matter of what she will do about it.
Mirabella: Beautiful, gentle and kind is the eldest sister of the three. And unlike her sisters, she appears to be the only one with any memory of their past times together. Despite being the clear power player in the game of life and death, Mirabella does all she can to try to escape having to kill her sisters. But one misunderstanding finally pushes her over the edge and now she will surely be out for blood.
Relationships (Though I think I use that term pretty loosely here in a certain case)
Pietyr & Katharine: I tried. I tried so hard not to love them, but I did. They are just so playful, flirtatious, comfortable and seemingly honest together. He helped Katharine grow, helped her develop confidence in herself. And I truly believed that against all odds they loved each other.
"I am your servant," he answers, and touches her cheek. "I am your slave. I am here to make sure every one of the suitors does not think of either of your sisters before they think of you." --- "Do you think the suitors will kiss like you do, Pietyr?" she asks, just to see his lower lip stick out.
"Of course not. They are mainland boys. All fumbling and drool. It will be difficult for you to pretend to enjoy it."
"They cannot all be bad," she says. "I am sure to find one who I like."
Pietyr arches his brow. His fingers dig into the back of the chair but relax when he sees her expression.
"Are you teasing me, Kat?"
"Yes." She laughs. --- Pietyr eyes the snake ruefully as he holds his wrist. Reacting was the right thing to do. Katharine would have been sick with the venom for days, even after receiving treatment. But he did so without thinking. And he had been afraid that Katharine would be hurt. Truly afraid.
"Only a king-consort is fool enough to love a queen," he says quietly.
But as always in the back of my mind I tried to remind myself that when things seem too good to be true in these sorts of situations they usually are. (view spoiler)[ And naturally that proved all too true when Pietyr literally pushes Katharine off into an abyss. Lousy bastard. (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ Now I am simply left to wonder if he betrayed her because he somehow secretly knew or found out she was not the true poisoner queen. And thus, despite his "love" for her, decided having a poisoner on the throne was more important. Or if he had some other motive for betraying the girl he claimed to love. (hide spoiler)]
Billy & Arsinoe: I liked these two. Not so much romantically, but as friends. Which for the most part is how they treated each other throughout the book, but I could see that changing the future. I certainly would not object to their relationship evolving into something more. Initially, Arsinoe did not like Billy on account of him being a stranger trying to infiltrate her friend group. And perhaps also because he was one of the suitors sent to court all three queens, however, they did become quite close. Close enough to the point that they were willing to risk their lives for each other.
"You jumped in front of that bear for me," he says.
"You jumped in front of it for me, first." --- Arsinoe does not move. She stares them down to the last and lets the mask do its job. Until Billy comes ashore.
Her heart warms. He does not seem weak or injured.
Billy stands below the cliffs and looks up at her. He bows, deep and slow, and the crowd murmurs. Arsinoe holds her breath.
He bows only to her.
So with my main ship sinking rather epically, I think I'll board this one. But I will be more cautious this time, lest I get heartbroken again.
Joseph & Mirabella: These two confuse me so much. Actually, no. Joseph and his back and forth confuse me, no, it pisses me off so damn much. Like what the hell dude? Pick one girl and stop lusting after another! Ugh. (view spoiler)[ Though I am trying to be fair because maybe his stupidity has to with the weird spell Arsinoe messed up. Maybe? Point is, as of now, Joseph is a lying dumbass. (hide spoiler)] But Mirabella is not innocent in this either. She fell for him way too fast. Like hello instalove/lust whatever you are. No one likes you, so please leave. Mirabella does not know anything about him. Other than him being one of the most attractive boys she's ever seen *eye rolling* and their obvious physical attraction to each other, what else do they have going for them? They've known each other for a few days, and yet the "romance" is getting treated like it's some epic, star-crossed lovers shit. But it's not. You're both awful and really, really dumb. Please think with your brains instead of with the parts below your waist.
Relationships aside, this book had me flipping page to page waiting to see when the final shoe to drop, and when it did I was like "No...fucking way..." (view spoiler)[ Honestly, I did not see the Arsinoe thing coming. I know I spoiled it up above but I just wanted to emphasis my shock again here lol (hide spoiler)] Which I think proves how good the mystery of it all was. I like to be kept on my toes and it is interesting when things do not go as I predict all the time.
So yeah, this book was a good time. It's basically kind of like what I imagine crack would be like. You know it's probably not actually good, but it's addicting so you're stuck sitting around....more
For those looking to read a kick-ass fantasy, adventure book, I implore you to look elsewhere! Because thisRoyal Bastards aka a royal waste of time...
For those looking to read a kick-ass fantasy, adventure book, I implore you to look elsewhere! Because this book was one of my most anticipated books of the year, and it was an utter letdown.
Issues with this: 1. Rehash of typical YA fantasy elements with little to no added fun 2. Insta-love that the main character will not/does not acknowledge as instalove, but is most definitely on the instalove spectrum 3. Odd narration elements, like sometimes the narrator's comments sometimes made me feel like I was reading a contemporary novel instead of fantasy. But maybe that's just me? 4. The plot drags a lot in the middle. Then toward the end, it seems like every single typical YA twist gets thrown in.
Characters: Tilla, our unjustly, overly confident heroine I wasn't scared. Maybe I should have been, but I wasn't. Sure these were trained killers and they outnumbered us twelve to four. But I had Zell's training. I had Galen and Lyriana at my back. And I really, really wanted to hurt someone. Like are you fucking serious?
Honestly, it might be a bit more believable if she had any prior training. But no, I am supposed to believe a girl who just been taught how to fight, for about a month, is able to overcome highly-trained soldiers? Nope, not buying it.
Zell, a mild Matthias rip-off, who is there to be the muscle of the group and an obvious love-interest for Tilla
Miles, standard nerd-friend in love, or maybe more correctly obsessed, with the heroine.
Jax, Tilla's more worldly, snarky, wise-cracking half-brother. Honestly, he was probably my favorite character. Probably because he was the one who always voiced what we were all thinking.
Lyriana, special snowflake princess I mean yes she was nice, but I just never connected with her. And therefore, I did not care at all if she survived.
Well this book was quite the delight. A lovely regency romance and dark fantasy, filled with mystery, dangerous secret"Welcome to the Dark Days Club"
Well this book was quite the delight. A lovely regency romance and dark fantasy, filled with mystery, dangerous secrets, rivalry and lust. I made quick work of this one. The book is well written and overall pretty well paced. I must admit though it requires some patience because each character's course of action is largely dictated by the societal norms of the. So some of the characters interactions can be a bit trying.
One thing I absolutely loved about this book is that it has a lovely amount of wit. I absolutely adore characters who are witty.
Helen is a quick, witty, curious, loyal and strong. One thing I do enjoy about her is that unlike some heroines she is rational. She is just cautious enough, without having to be paranoid. Helen thinks for herself and is willing to entertain the ideas of the impossible. When she is revealed to have gifts she never dreamed possible Helen is forced to make a choice: choosing the life she's always believed she'd have or one in which she would be able serve a greater purpose but her life would be constant danger.
"Sometimes there is no right choice"
That certainly proves to be true in Helen's life. Because no matter what choice she makes someone gets hurt. And finally Helen decides that she can only do what she thinks is right. Because she finally realized that in the end you cannot have everyone happy. It is a simple truth of life.
Joining Helen we have a colorful cast of characters from the mysterious, dark, handsome and commanding Lord Carlston, to the witty, kind and loving Duke of Selburn, and the fiercely loyal, sassy, willful Darby.
There are still however, many unanswered questions and the battle against good and evil is clearly just getting started.
To start off the writing is top notch. I liked writing style.
I truly do like both of our leads, and adored the secondary characters Rating ~ 3.5-3.75
To start off the writing is top notch. I liked writing style.
I truly do like both of our leads, and adored the secondary characters as well.
Shazi - She is a girl who knows how to get what she wants. But at the same time she was a girl who tried to operate solely on logic alone, rather than listening to her heart, which given her situation was the smart thing to do when you're essentially trapped in a palace of strangers. However, this led to a lot of roundabout interactions from both Shazi and our other characters. Still her initial motives for entering the palace were noble, at least in my opinion, and I respect the lengths with which is willing to go to avenge her friend.
Khalid - He is dark, charming and far far too secretive. I know that as I ruler he must put his people above all else, and shield them for the horrors of the world. But honestly life would be so much simpler if he was more honest with his people about his actions. Because despite what people may think, Khalid does not kill out of cruelty. He does so out of necessity; he does so for his kingdom.
Jalal - For every dark, broody, secretive character you need to have at least one more carefree, disarmingly playful, charmer around. It's like ying-yang, you need balance. Khalid and Jalal are each others balance. I thoroughly enjoy every scene Jalal is in.
Despina - One pretty, sassy, fun handmaiden per standstrong, stubborn queen - that seems like a necessary formula for entertaining female friendship. Despite she social class Despina is not afraid to speak her mind. She says what she means and means what she says. And while in the beginning we feared she was a spy for Khalid, she and Shazi became quick friends who supported each other and their complicated relationships with the royal cousins.
But there were times when I was just so frustrated with our leads and their reasoning behind some questionable decisions. First off, I'm not sure why Shazi felt the need to take archery lessons from Jalal initially. I mean she knows she can hit a target with her eyes closed. I don't think public practice is needed. I suppose it was just so we could get a fun rendition of twenty questions between the two later. Secondly, the huge secret Khalid was guarding for the majority of the book, I know that it is in fact a burden to bear but I found myself waiting and waiting for him to tell Shazi the truth. A truth I think most readers figured out or at least were close to figuring out long before it was finally revealed. If was frustrating because honestly they both clearly already started following their hearts, might as well just take the plunge. At least then she'd have confirmation that he wasn't a monster.
In terms of their person conflicts, at least they never seemed to last all too long. Also, thankfully, Khalid loved Shazi enough to not jump the gun after the truth about her history was revealed, and he was literally willing to die for her happiness. And Shazi was willing to look past her initial vengeance and see Khalid for more than he appeared to be. So despite of some flaws they both clearly loved each other a lot and that helped. Because if there's one thing I hate it's people claiming to love each other yet doubting each other at every turn. Like come on people, it's called trust.
It was fortunate to see that Shazi, despite being an "outsider", had some allies in the palace other than Khalid. Those being Jalal and Despina. The fact that Jalal trusted Shazi at the end and knew in his heart that her love for his cousin was true had me breathing such a sign of relief. The fact that Jalal is so fiercely loyal to Khalid, trusting of Shazi and willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family speaks volumes about him. Which is one reason he may very well be a my favorite character. But what he said to Tariq at the end had me wanting to bash my head against a wall. Like what!? After that damn confrontation you're just gonna let her go with them? What was the point of stopping them in the first place? Well at least Jalal can forever remind Khalid that Shazi admits to seeing the palace, seeing him, as her home. I know her departure is suppose to be for the best somehow, but by god if Shazi does not return after seeking out her father - heads will roll. I will make it happen somehow.
I do feel pity for Tariq in all of this though. He is willing to go to war for a girl he loves above all else. A girl who once loved him as well, at least I think she did. Who, under different circumstances, may very well have married him. But alas despite her best efforts Shazi now loves Khalid, and I'm not sure how she's going to react when she finds out all the wretched dealings her loved ones have made to steal the throne from her beloved.
Point is I really did enjoy this book and am eager to see how the story concludes. I pray that somehow our characters meet a happy end. Though I know there will be some damage I really just want Khalid and Shazi & Jalal and Despina to make it out of this alive and happy. Please author please. ...more
This must be how girls go mad: It’s the only alternative to boredom
Absolutely marvelous! I simply adore this book. It has all the literally elements This must be how girls go mad: It’s the only alternative to boredom
Absolutely marvelous! I simply adore this book. It has all the literally elements I've been loving recently: mystery, fantasy, a historical setting, humor, intrigue, romance and more.
The story is truly engaging, with twists and turns that kept to wondering until the end.
Evelyn is a stubborn, willful, strong and courageous young woman who wants nothing more than to be free from the bounds of society and find herself. But that all changes when she sister is mysteriously kidnapped and taken to London. Evelyn will do anything to find her sister. But along the way she discovers so much more. A greater power within herself. And everything she thought she knew about herself, and those around her, is put into question. She is reunited with her former teacher. Learns the truth behind a relationship she long had faith in. And she finds comfort in a man she almost immediately wrote off as Byronic. Though her actions were often times rash, in her mind there was no other alternative. Because she felt alone in her quest for answers. But she would eventually realize that there were plenty of people willing to stand beside her.
Sebastian (Mr. Braddock), like a number of characters I know, is dark, mysterious and guarded just as he appears. But as has come to be expected in literature, he is that way for a reason. His past is dark, as is his power. He and Evelyn took a near instant dislike to each other, yet in time found themselves changing their tune. Where Evelyn is life, Sebastian is death. He is a tragic hero from near beginning to end. And I can only hope he is not truly lost, that he will find his way back to Evelyn somehow.
Nicholas (Mr. Kent) is an utter delight! Honestly, he has some of the best lines in the entire book. His laid back attitude, lovely humor and sharp wit give this book some of it's life. And his banter with Evelyn is superb. Honestly, I feel like I like Evelyn more when these two are together. They truly complement one another fabulously. Initially, he appears to be just another companion for Evelyn. But he quickly proves through his willingness to help Evelyn whenever possible, that he is not one to sit on the sidelines. His way with words proves to be an invaluable asset. And his deep understanding of Evelyn has you cheering for him until the end. After all he was willing to take a walk with death in order to prove than he could be Evelyn's ally to the very end.
For people worried about a love triangle: While there is indeed a love triangle I do not feel like it took away from the story in anyway. Romance was not the main focus of this book. There is no back and forth because Evelyn is far more focused on finding her sister than she is on snagging a man, which it good. Perhaps, let that dilemma happen further down the line or you know when she's actually able to see or speak to either of them again.
Overall, this story was one of great fun, danger and mystery. I genuinely liked if not loved all the characters and cannot wait to see them again soon.
"I am Henrietta Howel. The first female sorcerer in ages. The girl who can control flames. The one who will defeat the ancients. The prophesied one. "I am Henrietta Howel. The first female sorcerer in ages. The girl who can control flames. The one who will defeat the ancients. The prophesied one. Or am I?"
A highly addicting, victorian fantasy. This book has all the classic elements one has come to expect from magic, fantasy books but is also sprinkled with delightful surprises.
I loving all the books I am reading lately about strong, independent woman thinking outside the box and being far ahead of their time. And I love seeing confident, intelligent young men realizing that a woman has no issues being any mans equal.
Henrietta is a kind, smart, curious, beautiful and powerful young woman. Pulled from her rather difficult, but otherwise uncomplicated life, she is thus into a world of magical power, politics, secrets and deception. However, she does not give in to the pressures around her despite how easy it would be. Because beyond just protecting herself and her childhood friend, she truly does want to help people.
"I am not interested in what is pleasant. I'm interested in what's useful."
Magnus: A handsome, charming, confident, strong young man.
Rook: Henrietta’s childhood friend. Loyal, patient, kind, handsome and cursed he is one of the Unclean.
Blackwood: Cold, distant, practical, powerful and undeniably lonely, he is the benefactor behind the school Henrietta and Rook worked at prior to arriving in London.
Note: Henrietta, Howel and Nettie are all the same person. I just use a different name based on her relationship with said individual
Howel & Magnus: From the get-go, these two had a gather easy-going camaraderie. Magnus was Howel’s first friend within the house. As she said, he was the first one to make her feel welcome. They have near instant chemistry as well. And what starts out as a simple flirtation easily becomes something more, putting our heroine’s heart into question.
These had such lighthearted scenes and such lovely chemistry. It was easy to enjoy them together, but then of course they were too good to be true. And shit hit the fan. (view spoiler)[ With Magnus failing to mention that he was in fact engaged the entire time they’ve known each other. It annoyed me to no end that he just assumed Howel was so attracted/attached to him that she would be alright with just being his mistress. Like are you kidding? Who in the hell wants that sort of relationship? Asshole. (hide spoiler)]
Nettie & Rook: Childhood friends, these two have unwavering loyalty to each other. Rook’s feelings for Nettie are undoubtedly clear. What is not clear is how exactly she feels about him. He is important to her, no doubt, but how so? Only time will tell.
Howel & Blackwood: These two got off on the wrong foot basically from the moment they met, given how that usually works in YA, I really thought he would be one of her primary love interests. However, that was not the case, at least not in this book. Instead, we got to see two young people, who were rather wary of each other, grow to understand each other and realize that they have more in common than they could’ve imagined. They became each other’s confidante. With Howel, Blackwood was able to confess a secret that could threaten to destroy his family name. He trusts her, and she makes him feel less alone.
"I didn't know how lonely I was," he said as we bowed, "until I had you on my side."
And Blackwood becomes the first and only person with whom Howel herself reveals her true nature to. As Howel said, what they have is not love. It is something deeper. "I'm a mix of both races, but I was born a magician. You have to know the truth." My heart pounded as I waited for his reply.
He was silent a moment. Then he said, "We need you. That's what is important. The rest is titles." Gently, he took my hand in his own. It wasn't a romantic gesture; it was deeper than that. We sat side by side, our burdens eased, if not lifted.
And by book's end, he became the one person she knew, without a doubt, that she could count on.
There had been many parties and celebrations lately, what with Korozoth's destruction, but I couldn't enjoy any of them. The Queen was taking more an interest in sorcerer affairs. And I was responsible. People who had claimed to be my allies snubbed me. I often felt alone when I went out in public.
There was one friend, however, I could always rely upon. "Howel, wait," Blackwood called as he came over to me. I smiled to hear my plain surname from his lips at last.
Not going to lie, despite myself, I could not help quietly shipping these two. I know the whole heroine + quiet brooding hero been done before, but I just want this to happen.
And honestly, I have a sneaking suspicion that in the long-term it will.
Howel and Magus are like fire, two flames burning hot and quick. But never meant to last long. With Nettie and Rook I see two people who have grown up together, who love and are loyal to each other. It had always been them against the world. But that is not the case anymore. While I do believe Henrietta loves Rook, I am not certain that she is in love with Rook. But with Blackwood, I see a connection. One that may take time and effort to grow and maintain but I do believe there is great potential here.
Henrietta & Agrippa: I really enjoyed their father-daughter-like relationship. Agrippa became quickly became the father Henrietta never had, and Henrietta in some ways filled the void of the daughter Agrippa had lost. It was such a good, sweet relationship and I was quite sad when it ended the way it did.
All-in-all I really liked this book. It was just a fun read. I love tales of magic, war, and redemption. Is it the most original thing? No, but it is an entertaining story; it is worth checking out if you like magic, fantasy, and romance....more

Honestly, I am surprised it took me so long to pick up these series. I'd heard good things about it, but also frustrated comments from fans about who the heroine chooses in the end. While I don't read fantasy purely for romance purposes it certainly doesn't hurt to have a great love story tied into a great fantasy adventure.
That being said I liked pretty much everything about this book. There was visual imagery, a well-paced plot, a decent amount of action, twists and turns. It was a pleasant read. Yet for some reason it didn't really hit me. I'm not sure if that's because I read a few mild spoilers comments here and there, but as much as I liked this book it just didn't leave me with that rush and exhilaration that quite a few others have. Maybe I'm just reading too much fantasy lately. Nevertheless, I liked it which is a good thing because I recently purchased the entire trilogy. I'm eager to see if this is one of those series that improve over the span of the series. ...more
