it was ok

Landline = Lame. Seriously, this won goodreads best fiction book in 2014? I beg to differ. This was predictable and boring. A landline to the past Georgie uses to contact her current husband who has decided to spend Christmas with his 2 daughters at his family's home in Omaha. Why? Because Georgie is a comedy writer and has to work on a show. I don't get the hype around this one - wasn't worth the read and I'm glad I didn't purchase it.

☮K²¹°ù±ð²Ô Very, very strange that this won best fiction book.

Canadian Jen So many more great reads from 2014...disturbing for me

Jeannie Sorry you didn't like this one.

Canadian Jen It happens :) Did you finish Jeannie?

Jeannie I haven't started it yet. I think my daughter bought it for me for Christmas. I hope I like it.

Laura • lauralovestoread Glad to know.. I marked all of the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ 2014 winners to read. Any you do recommend reading??

Canadian Jen It wasn't a bad read just lacked substance. If you want an easy, light read -it will be ok. If you haven't read Enchanted, move that up the list:)

Canadian Jen Big little lies is also a good read from 2014, Laura

Gar Looks like one miss then

Canadian Jen one in the grander scheme isn't so bad

Jeannie Jen wrote: "Big little lies is also a good read from 2014, Laura"

I loved Big Little Lies! I recommend that one also.

Laura • lauralovestoread Thanks Jeannie! I will start that one next :)

Heather Boudreaux omg...glad I'm not the only one! Halfway through and I am putting it down. Extremely boring book.

John I totally agree with you! Lame. Why three stars tho'. I rated it two and thought I was over-generous.

Canadian Jen I was being generous ...twas the season of giving ... :)

Lauran I would also recommend Big Little Lies. I picked up Landline only because it was the 2014 fiction winner. I made it about 30 pages before I put it down. I haven't read any of her other books, and based off this I don't see myself picking any up. She does seem to have a large fan base though.

Joshua It was certainly average, and what a piece of work Neil was. The Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ awards must not mean much. Wolf in White Van didn't even earn a nomination and this middling novel won it all!

Yep - looks like we are a minority!

Kelli Couldn't agree more! Lame.

Jillian Yep the characters sucked! I don't get why the husband ignores her all week when he's away then magically wants to talk with her when she's there? What kind of husband just ignores his wife like that? Not really any real reasons given. Seems very unrealistic.

Not complex enough for me either...still wondering how it won.

Renee Couldn't agree more!

Jenn This book was not good! I can't believe I even gave it 2 stars

Canadian Jen Colleen wrote: "Completely agree! This book was terrible. Neal is a whiny malcontent and Georgie is a low self esteem, misery magnet. Gross."

yep!

Anna Dalosi No plot. How can this be fiction? Most boring book ever!

Canadian Jen Anna wrote: "No plot. How can this be fiction? Most boring book ever!"

Cheers to that!

E Like many people with the Oscars, you're assumption here is that the GR novel award confers excellence. It does not. It is a popularity contest. Rowell's other books are popular (E&P deservedly so). This book was carried by that tide. Nothing more.

message 29: by Saer (new)

Saer I can't even believe this is the same author who wrote E&P. This is easily the worst book I have read in the past decade.

It was a disappointment. I won't even pick up E&P based on this one.
