2.5...Over the Top Humor with Belly Laughs and Belly Flops (Ouch!)

I wanted to love this story. Really! Some scenes had me grinning and laughing through childhood enemies, Connor and Rory, tumultous relationship. The story hit its stride once their arrangement began, and I was able to let go of my intense dislike of sexist Connor. The Bradfords (from previous Neighbors from Hells books) made their appearance and wore out their welcome. I laughed in their stories; I didn't need a refresher, and wanted the focus on the couple. While the ending fulfilled my romantic bone, there were too many misses and near-DNFs for me to overcome.

Mad Scientist lendable *waggles eyebrows*

Stacia (the 2010 club) How are you doing on this? I feel like it's taking me forever to read. It's not that I don't like the book, it's just not really grabbing me all that much either.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) It's not grabbing me, either. I'm stuck at 27%. Not feeling motivated to read it atm. Gotta get it done, which seems to make me drag my feet more. : /

Samantha I'm strangely tempted to pick this one up even though I really didn't care for the previous book in the series and had some issues with the first one. I think I have a problem. ;) Hearing that its not grabbing you makes it a little easier to resist though.

Stacia (the 2010 club) I finally started reading again on this in bed last night. The book picked up around 40% but I'm only at 50% now! Talk about feeling like this is long...

Once I complete this group read, I can lend it to you if you're interested. :o)

@Stacia...I'll try picking it up again sometime today. Got a buddy read for the latest Courtney Milan. Have high hopes!

Enabler! :P I might take you up on that offer. I have a few lendable books on my e-reader that I'd be more than willing to return the favor with. If you'd like I'll send you a list and you can choose one if any strike your fancy.

He he...there is no shame in enabling a reader! Plus it makes me feel like I purchased the book at half-price. Now I can buy another ebook. Ho! Ho! Ho! It's the season for giving!

Dd Great review Anna!!:))

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Thanks, Dd!

The review is short and sweet (well, maybe not so sweet). My opinion is in the minority with other GR friends and the GR community at-large. I do appreciate OTT humor, but this story did not work for me like the first book in the series.

I have to start with this series. It's been in my TBR for so long!!:)

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Playing for Keeps is very good, Dd! Tickles the funny bone just right if you like stories with silliness. It was a 4 star read for me. (Some people gave it 5 stars.) If you like Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken or Susan Elizabeth Phillips, you'll probably enjoy R.L. Mathewson! ;o)

Richa Nice review, Anna!! :) Is this series similar to SEP books??

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Richa wrote: "Nice review, Anna!! :) Is this series similar to SEP books??"

Her stories have emotional depth with silly/humorous scenes and dialogue that SEP has. Mathewson is a little more over-the-top. Comparing her to Shelly Laurenston is more accurate.

Ian R.L. books are completely over the top. I think SEP occasionally does zany while R.L. occasionally doesn't do zany. Maybe RL's main characters are a little like SEP's secondary characters.

Well said, Ian!

Karla Nicely done Anna. It's hard when you really want to like something and it just doesn't meet your expectations.

Thank you, Karla! Many GR friends enjoyed this story so I'm fairly alone with my opinion. If I take out the beginning, the Bradford filler, tidy moment, and add a flashback the remainder of the story is very good. : /
