2 stars for the interesting concept but poorly delivered narrative with a dumb main character whose only personality trait is being good at cooking.

It would’ve been more fitting had this been marketed as a creative cookbook rather than YA fantasy.

I’ll start with the world-building which was lackluster and quite lazy. We know this was set in Italy, but the time period was unclear. We never got fleshed-out descriptions of the buildings, the clothing, and the people. This was also one of those books that “tell rather than “show. Almost everything about the world was explained and introduced through dialogue such as Nonna’s stories and Wrath’s answers to Emilia’s questions. That would’ve been fine if I were invested enough in the story and characters to look past it, but I wasn’t. The different “Houses weren’t developed either. If Maniscalco put as much effort into describing the world as she did for describing the food, the world-building would’ve been great and I wouldn’t have had to piece together information that I didn’t have.

As for the plot, I just needed them to shut up and stop talking about food for the entirety of the book. It was almost as repetitive as the word “mate in the ACOTAR series. Granted that the plot did pick up when we finally met Wrath, the bulk of it was still quite the snoozefest. The whole plot just fell flat. I was expecting this to be a well-developed enemies-to-lovers story with dark, witchy vibes that would get me hooked, but all I got was half a story with dark, witchy vibes where not a lot happened. The ending resolved absolutely nothing and left me confused, but I guess that sets us up for the next book which I know for sure I will not be reading because I just can't be bothered. I am thrilled to announce that this book will be the first addition to my new collection of “books to read before bed so I can fall asleep in less than 30 seconds.

Moving on to the characters. Emilia was boring, annoying, and reckless. It bothered me how she almost always managed to get away rather unscathed despite her recklessness. It also seemed as though everything clicked too quickly with the clues she found. Emilia didn’t even really have to try for anything and everything was way too easy; there was little conflict between plot points. Wrath was the only character that was at least a little bit entertaining to me, however, he was a pathetic manifestation of a sin. One would expect the Prince of Wrath and War to be wrathful or warlike, but he was neither. Instead, he was just a generic “hot, dark and broody love interest who actually didn’t have much of a personality and was also quite the bore like Emilia. Gotta love how they match each other’s energies, I guess. As for the Wicked, they should’ve been terrifying, but were all relatively weak and easily defeated. It also seemed like they were placed in random events throughout the story—especially in the beginning—just for the shock factor.

Overall, this book felt rushed and drawn out at the same time. While the idea of the book is good, the execution was not. The plot was undefined and scattered much like the characters. Although I complained about the overwhelming amount of times that food was mentioned, the food still had more personality than the actual characters. This book is the epitome of wasted potential and I can’t wait to read another book so I can purge this one out of my head!

eli ♡ awesome review! I would have thought that this was an amazing review based on the intriguing synopsis, but I guess that just wasn't the case.

erin Tell it like it is queen

Jackie ϟ Bookseller YES. You said it better than me. Totally agree.

Alyssa Comeau I agree with everything. The food got more of a personality than most of the characters, and it felt like Emilia was just wandering around her city while things happened to her.

Jessica Booth This pretty much sums up how I felt about it exactly. yawn.

message 7: by Vivi (new) - rated it 1 star

Vivi THANK YOU for this review. I felt like I was going crazy seeing so many four and five stars for this book. Did these people read a different book than we did?? The writing was horrible, the plot was a mess, and the characters were so bland I couldn’t take them seriously once. Like I get that people have different tastes but come on!! This was just bad in every sense except for the IDEA of it

Rebecca Agree. I thought this book was terrible and poorly thought out

Fatima Syed Woah :O this was exactly how I felt about the book too!!

Jennifer Grengs This is so true. After seeing so much hype on the book I was worried I may have missed something that everyone else saw when I finished it

Kayleigh Literally this! The characters and plot were all over the place, the Wicked weren't scary at all, and I got so sick of reading lists of ingredients - why do I need to know exactly what you're putting in your bruschetta every time??

message 12: by Ry (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ry Ma I couldn’t agree more!!! You said everything i wanted to say, the plot line had potential but the poor execution of it made me want to stop reading it every couple of pages.

Nerdybooklady Ok its not just me then! Anyone else also get confused when one minute shes one place then suddenly shes in another with no explanation as to how she got there????

Vanessa Pereira Vieira You are sooo right!

Csrygley Nerdy, yes!! So many times it jumped around and I had no idea how we got from point a to b. And every other scene felt either under-explained or completely pointless.

Nerdybooklady Csrygley RIGHT!!! I couldnt understand the hype for this book because it just boggles my brain that people were okay with it being so erratic!

message 17: by Eden (new) - rated it 3 stars

Eden This book was literally so confusing

Taylor Balasavage i’m losing it at this review LMAO. so true queen, even though i did enjoy the ride and gave it more stars. i won’t deny anything you said tho lol

Zakiya Glad to see someone’s opinion that matches with mine. Although I don’t agree completely with your opinion on Emilia. I 100% agree with your opinion on Wrath. I was seriously disappointed with his character Emilia throughout the whole book made it seem like he was this evil, cunning tyrant who is the epitome of the sin Wrath. Literally he does nothing in the book apart from brooding and giving her clothes like seriously I was so disappointed. Spoiler* For someone who is the prince of War and Wrath he literally was taken down so easily by Envy. It would have been so interesting to see a fight scene between the two of them but sadly no.

Lydia Whittaker this is such an accurate review, I wish I'd read it before the book so I didnt waste my time. It's marketed as a romance but there is zero romance in it.

frannie Same!! I honestly thought I was the only one who didn't enjoy it but looking at this comment section I guess not lol

Jenny You literally took the words out of my head and placed them into this review. The plot has SO MUCH potential, but I couldn't picture anything. The magic was cool, but I wanted more of it. Everything happened WAY too easily for Emilia, and she was often stupid in her choices. Wrath was kind of blah. I get it, you're dark and dangerous. Cool. There was no complexity to his character. I was a bit disappointed if im being honest. I also knew who the killer was the ENTIRE time. It was pretty obvious. I will read the second book because I'm hoping it gets better, so we will see.

Jenny Also, the "romance" didnt even happen until the last quarter of the book, and it was pitiful at best.

I annotate my books with different colored tabs. Yellow means I'm angry or annoyed. I ran out of yellow tabs. 😂

message 24: by Momo (new) - rated it 2 stars

Momo Oh my god your review is 100%! I was sooooo booord. And Emilia was annoying, the whole book left me confused I dont really get the point of it.

Sparrell Yesss you took the words out of my mouth! Really struggled with this one

message 26: by Nora (new) - rated it 2 stars

Nora This is exactly wat I was thinking

message 27: by Myya (new)

Myya Mead Yes!! I agree 100% with everything you said. It had such great potential to be a good book but it just lacked everything it needed to really make it good

message 28: by Hanieh (new) - added it

Hanieh maleckghasemi I don't know what's wrong with me but I like to read negative reviews before starting a book .

and nothings more annoying to me than an story with weak personality characters.

so thanks for preventing me from wasting my time for reading this book

Paige i’m yelling at this because i also read it to fall asleep

message 30: by Nora (new) - rated it 3 stars

Nora I can’t agree more i’m really disappointed

Rafaela Sousa OMG that is exactly how I felt about Emilia. Trying to make herself the "queen of darkness" while she was all bark and no bite and dumb decisions

Nellie, save yourself and don't read the second book. It was just as bad--if not worse--than the first book. I truly hoped for a significant jump in events and story after the initial world-building, but it was more of the same stuff that you pointed out in this review. Wrath and Emilia are still boring, still lack communication skills, the Wicked are still a joke, and Hell is more of a winter wonderland than it is a wicked, foreboding torture chamber.

The only criticism that was addressed in the second book was the time period, which is the late 19th century.

Courtney Chase literally just finished the book and came to the reviews for some solidarity. thank you for this review and your eloquent descriptions of my EXACT thoughts

message 34: by Emily (new) - added it

Emily Dammer I'm still trying to get through this book because I heard the sequel is amazing, but this one is sooo bad. I have little hope.

Someone (Lisa Yoshii) also commented on this review that the second book is worse than the first, so I'm definitely not gonna waste my time reading the next book.

Nellie Courtney wrote: "literally just finished the book and came to the reviews for some solidarity. thank you for this review and your eloquent descriptions of my EXACT thoughts"

You're very welcome. It's been months since I read it and I genuinely don't remember anything apart from how bored I was.

Nellie Lisa Yoshii wrote: "Nellie, save yourself and don't read the second book. It was just as bad--if not worse--than the first book. I truly hoped for a significant jump in events and story after the initial world-buildin..."

Oh god. Thank you for letting me know. I'm definitely not gonna waste my time, then.

Nellie Hanieh wrote: "I don't know what's wrong with me but I like to read negative reviews before starting a book .

so thanks for preve..."

EXACTLY. Don't read it. You'll regret it.

Hanna I wish I would have seen this sooner... it would have spared my a lot of disappointment. I loved the initial setting, but this was so terrible that I really stared to hope that smth bad happens to Emilia. How can you be so dumb and get away with everything unscathed?! Romance was also none existent or so out of place that I thought she has a wet dream about him. I would've prefered that. I'm glad I'm not the only one who disliked this book, great review!

Pardis Bi Girl, you said it all!! OMG! I had high expectations over this book but when I started reading it, I was like "what the ..."
We didnt get to know the characters well and it was like the story kept jumping from one scene to the other without any warning and it made me confused!
Also whats with the cooking?! I skipped those parts as well.
I am so disappointed and I wont trust hypes anymore!!

Georgiana This, all of this. God, the urge to throw it whenever food was described in minute detail, while THE REST was breezed past. I think I've begun hating on canolli thanks to Emilia. Oh and the damned gowns. Knowing exactly what the main character wears for every scene is more important than having a clear sense for the world this story is set in. :|

Mackenzi C Yes that is so true I did not like the book either

Mackenzi C I did not even finish it and I got it yesterday 🙃 I wasted my time and money

message 44: by Mali (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mali Yup.

Kaytlin Pettitt Couldn’t agree more. And I also just feel like events were expanded on enough. Like..
*SPOILER*

Nonna gets her throat slashed and after half a paragraph talking about this event and ten minutes passing in the book everyone is like “she’s fine let’s move on???! It just seems like no character had a real reaction to anything.

Morgan This review perfectly encapsulates what I felt about this book. My review is basically a retweet of this. Thank you

message 47: by Jessica (new) - added it

Jessica Girgawi Honestly, I was really disappointed with this book too and so glad I’m not the only one 😩

Aiims2read well thank you ! AMEN. my god it was so hard to get through. i thought it was me because ( almost ) everybody seems to love it.

message 49: by Maya (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maya charania This could not be more accurate, also the literature was trash, and no emotional attachment to any characters therefore didn’t feel anything but was definitely fun to laugh at😌

message 50: by é (new) - rated it 3 stars

é Emilia was annoying as hell. Like she thinks she's smart and cunning, trying to theorise on things that really weren't that deep, when she's actually very stupid and delusional. And she's always being defensive.
