I ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, UNEQUIVOCALLY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

Who hasn't had regrets - wished they'd taken a different path in life, loved more and hated less, studied a little harder, applied themselves a bit more, had more faith in themselves, wished they'd liked themselves for who they were instead of what others wanted them to be?

I'm certainly not immune, and I've actually fulfilled a couple of my life's ambitions, but life is not easy for any of us. As Nora was to discover, we all "fear life" to some degree - we learn pretty young that actions can have pretty painful consequences.

Some of us stare that fear in the face and do what frightens us anyway. Many more of us, however, will step back and opt to take the safer road. I loved the notion of Nora being able to insert herself in a parallel timeline and see how her life would have been like had she taken a chance on all of those potentially life changing events. The whole parallel universe notion was so tantalizing! Imagine if you, too, could examine and then finally burn your own Book of Regrets and just move on with living your best life now?

The first third of this novel is heavily mired in depression. If you've never felt stuck or depressed, you will certainly get a clue of what it feels like after you've read or listened to those first few chapters leading up to Nora's attempted suicide. There was a history of depression in Nora's mother's family. I was not surprised that Nora fell into depression after taking care of her mother during her long, protracted illness. Death has a way of stopping the clock for the survivors and making them examine the value of their own life. I suspect there will be many who will identify with most of what Nora thinks and says in this novel.

Nora's Midnight Library is guarded and managed by her beloved childhood mentor and high school librarian, Mrs. Elm. There are several chapters devoted to Mrs. Elm's struggle to get Nora to try to experience one of the parallel lives in her Midnight library. This reflects the very real battle that a person with depression must face to get to the point where they can finally admit that they need help to get "unstuck." Matt Haig has given a whole new meaning to the word "potential." I totally agreed with Nora's final decision at the end of the book. In fact, I saw it coming even before she had completed her first journey. We can't live someone else's life. The choice must truly be our own if we want any abiding sense of fulfillment.

This author - this book - has a lot to teach us. I am so very glad that I decided to check out what all the hype was about: turns out, all that hype was fully merited ! Loved every bit of it, including the sad parts. A full five out of five glowing stars for this heart-stirring, sanity-saving novel. We all need to burn our own book of regrets... and just get on with living our best life NOW!
Highly, highly recommended!
Note: I listened to the audiobook version, very ably narrated by the British film actress, Carey Mulligan.

“If you aim to be something you are not, you will always fail. Aim to be you. Aim to look and act and think like you. Aim to be the truest version of you. Embrace that you-ness. Endorse it. Love it. Work hard at it. And don't give a second thought when people mock it or ridicule it. Most gossip is envy in disguise.”

“It is easy to mourn the lives we aren't living. Easy to wish we'd developed other other talents, said yes to different offers. Easy to wish we'd worked harder, loved better, handled our finances more astutely, been more popular, stayed in the band, gone to Australia, said yes to the coffee or done more bloody yoga.
It takes no effort to miss the friends we didn't make and the work we didn't do the people we didn't do and the people we didn't marry and the children we didn't have. It is not difficult to see yourself through the lens of other people, and to wish you were all the different kaleidoscopic versions of you they wanted you to be. It is easy to regret, and keep regretting, ad infinitum, until our time runs out.
But it is not lives we regret not living that are the real problem. It is the regret itself. It's the regret that makes us shrivel and wither and feel like our own and other people's worst enemy.
We can't tell if any of those other versions would of been better or worse. Those lives are happening, it is true, but you are happening as well, and that is the happening we have to focus on.”

I hope you enjoy it. First bit can be tough going because the main character is depressed. (Who hasn't had a bout of depression, I wonder? Life gets really hard, very fast.) I felt like I had taken a huge vacation after reading this book: refreshed and ready to move on with my day and my life. Stick with it: you will be amply rewarded. This book teaches you how to COPE with life.

I listened to it on a set of CDs from the library. I put holds on all of the formats and this was the first to become available. There are over a thousand holds on the book formats.
If you've ever been depressed, and who hasn't, this is an excellent book. Our fears, our disappointments, our personal hardships - they all add up to a heavy load and we get jaded and depressed. We lose our enthusiasm for life and new adventures and don't want to try any more. the beginning is rough going, but once you start getting to the alternate life experiences, things become very interesting and move pretty quickly. It's one of those books you are very glad to have read. Good luck with this one, Jasmine!

Thanks Kat! I am now spoiled for choice in reading materials and can't seem to settle on anything. It's allergy season for me so I'm a tad cranky. Good news is that the gyms are open today!!! But I need a book for the treadmill!!! Yikes, I had better get out of this slump fast! I hope you are enjoying many great reads! I'll check your site for any goodies! Stay well!

A brilliant review of a wonderful book - thank you!
I am sure you will like The Comfort Book too 🙂, have a nice and peaceful weekend!"
Thank you for your kind words, Swaroop. Thanks for the suggestion, too. It's been difficult to find something new to read after that one! Happy reading, Swaroop, and stay well!

thanks, Debbie. I needed to read this book. I ordered his other book, The Book of Comfort. I really need to read that one: rough week. Actually, time and distance has helped already, because I try not to dwell on things too much, but the first few days were hard going. Now, time to retune my thoughts with this second book by this amazing, inspirational writer!

Thank you, Sofie. I ordered my own copy from Amazon because I just loved this so much and can see myself rereading portions of it again and again. Such wisdom - learned from the school of hard knocks, I'm sure!

Thank you Lucy, I so, so, so did love this book!

Thank you so very much, Andrea!
It's not hard to be enthusiastic when you learn that this man has lived through depression and made it to the other side. For those of us who have had similar journeys, his message is very life -affirming.
I was appalled by a few of the negative and scathing reviews of this book that got so many likes. I will never understand the knee-jerk, sneering reaction to self-help books. So many people cannot afford even basic medical care. Sometimes, these types of books are the only support sufferers of depression can turn to.
The healthcare system is overburdened. It is good to know that an excellent writer like Matt Haig is brave enough to share his experiences with depression through this haunting, beautiful story. I am so very proud of him.

Thanks, Tina! I highly recommend this one. It changed my thinking!

Thanks Kendall. This book came at the right time for me. I was looking back at my life choices and regretting so many of them. Matt Haig convinced me that there are really no wrong choices. Life is what we make it and we still have so many choices ahead of us. If we learned something from our past mistakes, then we can only get better at choosing a better path!
Stay well, Kendall, and thanks for the lovely comment!

Thanks so much Helena! I truly did love this book. It came to me as just the right time! Regret is a waste of time. Focus on the now: make the best of it and enjoy it. Matt Haig is a miracle worker.
I was so upset at the terrible reviews he received at first. So unfair, and the criticisms were unwarranted. I bought my own copy of this book as well as his The Comfort Book.
Thanks for sharing your love of this wonderful book with me!

You totally got my attention! 😁
Imagine if you, too, could examine and then finally burn your own Book of Regrets and just move on with living your best life now?

Now wouldn't that be something? *smile*
Death has a way of stopping the clock for the survivors and making them examine the value of their own life. I suspect there will be many who will identify with most of what Nora thinks and says in this novel.
Well said.
A full five out of five glowing stars for this heart-stirring, sanity-saving novel. We all need to burn our own book of regrets... and just get on with living our best life NOW!
I definitely need to move this one up closer to the top of the TBR pile...
Wonderful review, Susan! 😊

Thanks so much for this very thorough comment, Renegade! For some reason, I am not receiving notifications of comments on my reviews. I really needed this book: I was wishing I had chosen a different career and done more in my younger days. COVID really shook a lot of people up, myself included.
I decided over 10 years ago to semi-retire. I still worked freelance, but I traveled more, made time to read more (don't regret that!) and just made more time for ME. I did regret the financial security of that decision, but after reading this book, I have to agree: the decision that would have brought this character financial freedom was not the one that brought her any happiness.
I think you will really enjoy this one, Renegade. You come across as a deep thinker with an open mind. The book is very well written. Some reviewers got way too many likes for their negative opinions. I think that just drew more attention to this book!!! I loved it!
Happy reading, Renegade. I always enjoy your comments!

Wow, what a compliment. Not hours, no, but I do spend quite a fair amount of time looking for the EXACT image that was often in my mind as I read the book. I'm a very visual reader - why bother with TV when I have a movie happening in my head when a book is really good, right?!
Actually, I think my reviews aren't any big deal. I truly believe that the images help express what I can't say in words.
I have great respect for authors. I tried to write a novel - several times, with no success. I like to get to the point. My novels would never be longer than a couple of chapters! I often feel guilty for lambasting some authors for showing and not telling, when I can be just as guilty. They say critics are failed writers. Guilty as charged!!!
But thanks for the lovely, lovely compliment. It made my day!
You are a very gifted writer as well. You for sure have a degree in English or went to Uni. I could tell. Either that, or you were born with the gift of good writing. Have you tried your own hand at writing a novel?

Thanks Heather. I'm reading his Book of Comfort (I think that is the title!) Great thus far. I needed to save this one for now. It is exactly what the doctor ordered for fall!

Each page is a gem, so I read a few and examine and admire each one.
Haig helps me look at the world with less tired eyes now that fall is here.
I love the way this author thinks.... which is always to stay hopeful and present.

So much!! Thanks Melissa! I hope you are getting in some great reads. Not too many out there lately, but one of my favourite authors, Katherine Center, has a new book available on NG and I am in HEAVEN!

I agree, Kristine. I think he reaffirmed that regret is a waste of time and emotion. I try not to look back. Some people I know are afraid to make ANY decisions at all, because they are afraid they will make a wrong decision, and they hate living in regret!
We all have regrets, but we need to keep moving forward and making the best of life.
Some people ask me: Oh, you never married? and I respond, with a big smile "Yes, I was very LUCKY! I am very happy single. Society makes us believe that we can only be happy in a relationship. I spent years "looking" and dating and just being so frustrated with the whole dating scene. After a while I just relaxed, decided to travel, have fun with my life, and I have to say, I am very, very happy now.
Stop putting pressure on yourself to measure up to anyone else's standards or needs but your own. THAT is what I took away from this book!
Thanks for the chance to discuss this wonderful book. The Comfort Book really is a comfort. I plan on reading his other books as well!
Stay well, Kristine!

Thanks Amina. Hard to believe that so many people posted harsh comments about this book. Seriously?!
I don't get why people are down on books that try to HELP people.
By all means, go to your doctor and get pills and a bad diagnosis or two. Thanks for your comment. This is what I love to see on GR - discussions about books, that is!

You're welcome! 😊
Saw your review in the updates and I was like, "Hey, wait a minute. I'm sure I liked and commented on that. Where did my 'like' go?"
Lo and behold, a wonderful response from you! 🥰
I don't always get notifications on the comments either and can stumble upon them days, months, or even years later...

I'm so glad that this book turned out to be what you needed, Susan.
Such a tremendous gift when that happens.
As you say, COVID really shook a lot of people up and had them reevaluating so many aspects of their lives and questioning numerous things that, for some, may have actually needed to be questioned. When things are fine/good, we're often less inclined to go there or to even pursue some of the changes we might actually need in order to lead more fulfilled lives.
Seems to me that life has tendency to rattle our cages and rock our comfort zones at various points along the way to see if we're actually awake or sleepwalking through the journey. Sometimes we get a gentle nudge... or ten...

And sometimes it's a less subtle intervention.

I think you will really enjoy this one, Renegade. You come across as a deep thinker with an open mind. The book is very well written. I'm so happy you loved it and, hopefully, I'll get to this one sooner than later. Thank you so much for both the recommendation and for the lovely compliments! 💖
Happy reading to you too, Susan! 🤗📚

Thank you so very much for your kind words, Kat! I truly enjoyed this one, and am reading his latest book now - taking my time because I don't want it to end (and also, so many things to do at this time of year! Yikes!)

Did you read this one, Sue? I love to read these types of speculative, psychological novels. I hate to look back on the past and let it haunt me, but I am only human. This was a great read for those of us who have suffered through depression, the loss of a loved one after a very prolonged illness, a major life change. It came exactly at the right time!
Hope you are well, Sue!

What a lovely message, Marilyn! Thanks so much! Yes, this one really spoke to me. Happy Reading, my Bookish Friend!
