it was amazing

February 22, 2023

I finished the reread and increased the rating to 5.

Some quotes:

"Telling the turth is not cynical, is it?"

"It's not time to worry yet."

"...we're making a step -- it's a baby step, but it's a step."

February 20, 2023

Yesterday I started rereading To Kill A Mockingbird by listening to the audiobook narrated by Sissy Spacek. Today I got to where Atticus Finch tells his daughter Scout, "Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird."

I read this in high school right after I saw the movie on TV. I don't remember much about the movie and even less about the book. I guess I'm due for a reread.

James Thomas You won't be disappointed

Tracy P. You and me both, Tim! However, I do remember loving this when I first read it many years ago.

message 3: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks to both James and Tracy. Sorry I missed your comments when you made them, but I've seen them now, and I thank you for your encouragement. I'm thinking maybe I'll reread this book by listening to an audio book. It's officially in the queue.

Jennifer (Jaye) (catching up slowly) This is definitely one for my list Tim 🥰🥰🥰

message 5: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks for commenting, Jennifer. I'm a little nervous about rereading this. I recently re-watched some Thin Man movies, and it shocked me to realize I once loved these movies. How could the world change so very much while remaining the same? Maybe Harper Lee has the answer. I'll try to squeeze this onto my short list

Octavia I've had the sequel, "Go Set a Watchman" for a long time. And, still need to read it.

message 7: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null When you read it, Octavia, let me know what you think.

The Cruciverbalistic Bookworm When I read this many years back, I remember thinking this is one of the best American classics I have ever read. I don't remember much of the story now. Thanks for the idea of a reread, Tim!

message 9: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks, Noble. I would love to hear your reactions if you do have a chance to reread this book.

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Welsh Still haven’t read this one, Tim! Loved the film

message 11: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks for commenting, Jennifer W. I'd love to see the film again, but I'm not ready to pay $14.95 unless the whole family wants to watch it with me. So far, the book has mainly been kids at play. It's been really good kids at play stuff, but I'm not really big on that. I'm hoping the meat and potatoes stuff will start soon, and I suspect it will.

theliterateleprechaun Read this in school and bought my own copy with money from my first job because I wanted to write in the margins while the teacher was explaining it. I still have the copy on my shelf. Little did I know then that I'd become a teacher and teach it every year for years!

message 13: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks TLL for sharing such a cool story. I'm listening to the library's audiobook but I ordered a paperback copy of the 50th anniversary edition so that Granddaughter can have it for high school, which she starts next year. That's hard to believe because it feels like she was born like yesterday.

Murray Good words Tim

Kellie O'Connor I'm glad that you reread this book,Tim!! I have read this book 4 times in my life and I see something different every time. I loved it! Great review and great quotes!! 😃📚🍀

message 21: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks so very much, Kellie. I haven't reread that many books because there are so many books I haven't even read once, and a couple of books didn't live up to my memory of the book, but there's no danger of that with To Kill a Mockingbird. It's just that great. It just gets better and better with every reading.

Deity World Studied this in gcse English as well as watching the movie very clever book

message 23: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null I agree, Deity World. Thanks for commenting.

Karen How many times have we read this book, Tim? Or seen the movie, and still feel like we can use a refresh? Perfectly stated! :)

Tim Null Thanks, Karen. Very much appreciated?

Lorna Beautiful review of this beloved classic, Tim.

message 27: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Thanks so very much, Lorna!

Janet Roger Once I'd seen the movie I found it hard to separate the two. In fact it would be hard to imagine the one without the other these days. It's a magnificent piece of writing and I think you were right to upgrade the rating. Having just reread it myself I'm about to follow your lead. many thanks for your review Tim.

message 29: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Yes, Janet, I also really enjoy movies and TV shows that mentally merge in my head with books that I've read. I suspect that my memory has always been very visual.

Janet Roger I agree Tim. I'm very visual too. Which is why I most often prefer to read a book before I see the movie. That way I already have a picture from the author in my head - to make a comparison with a director's decision. And in fairness, sometimes the director wins out - as in LA Confidential. I absolutely love Elroy's books but the condensed version the movie gives us is superb. All said and done, it's good to have both isn't it?

message 31: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim Null Yes, definitely!
