it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy

When my friend first recommended this author to me, I wasn't expecting much. If Laurell K. Hamilton was so good, why hadn't I heard of her before? One of the main reasons she remained under my book radar was because I usually stick to historical romances and even then specific authors of the genre. The first couple of pages in A Kiss of Shadows left me blown away. Hamilton creates a world that blends multiple genres: fantasy, science fiction, suspense/thriller, and even romance. I knew it would be an atypical romance, but that fact only left me more engaged in reading the series. She not only creates an unique world, but she develops intriguing characters, many of which you become attached to from the first book. Meredith Gentry, the protagonist and heroine of the series, is admirable; she is a strong woman who knows what she wants and will fight for it. The first person perspective, which is usually over-used in fiction, is well-crafted in this series. It makes all the events of the novel seem more real to the reader, as if you are experiencing the action at the same time Meredith is. If you like strong female characters, handsome hunks, and exploring new worlds, this is the book for you. It is a perfect escape from our mundane realities for open-minded readers.

Gaijinmama Sounds right up my alley!

Nice review.

Adrianna Thanks, Gaijinmama! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Have you read anything by this author?

Gaijinmama Yes, the first Anita Blake book.
It was really good and I've collected the next three but haven't read them yet.

So many books, so little time, you know?

James Mourgos Sounds like something I will check, though the romance novel is a bit outside my normal genre stuff. So's Anita Blake. I'm almost done with Obsidian Butterfly. The unnecessary gratuitous sex does not help the plot at all. This book is a bit better than the last ones. You have a lot of books in your 'to read' pile, wow. I hope your Eureka library is OK. When we had the big 1989 earthquake, it took some time to fix up the huge main library in SF.

Adrianna Yes, I know how you feel Gaijinmama. I wish I had more time in the day for all my activities, especially reading. I'm too eclectic for my own good. I like to do so much with such little time!

I should warn you, James, that the Merry Gentry series starts off with a lot of sex, but it is very different from the Anita Blake sex scenes, at least as far as I got in the series. There is a purpose for the sex in the Gentry series, which you discover as you read further in.

The library seemed ok. I was checking it out when they reopened it. They sure put in a lot of effort fixing it up. It's important because a lot of people rely on the library for their computer and book needs.

James Mourgos Since I wrote that comment way back in January I have read the first Merry Gentry. It has a lot of similarities to Anita Blake's world and there is sex that is a bit strong for my taste. It is a worthy read however.

Thanks for reading my review, James! I'm so glad you enjoyed it even though it still had more sex than the Anita series.

James Mourgos At least it gets me to read more books, which is one of my 2010 goals! I'm reading Girl with the DRagon Tattoo and The Deception Point.

Adrianna Yeah, that's one of my goals this year too. :)
