Amanda suggested this challenge and I thought it would be fun. For October, you can have a member of the group pick your next book to read from your dusty shelves. The challenge is to finish it before October 31.

Here's the details of how it works:

-If you want someone to pick a book for you, leave a comment with a direct link to your dusty bookshelf titles. The shelf can be a personal shelf or the one in the group. Or if you like typing, you can list the books here in this thread. Just make it easy for us to find what books you have on your challenge list.

-The first person to comment with a book suggestion from your list is the book that you will have to read for this challenge.

-You can ask for suggestions starting right now so that you have the whole month of October to read it.

I hope this challenge will be fun for everyone! if there are any problems just let me know.

Yess, I've started reading quite a few, but then I end up in a readers block and don't read past a few pages no matter how good the book is!

Thalia, I'd go with The Hobbit, especially since the movie is about to come out in theaters! Also, I believe it's the prequel to The Lord of the Rings series -- and much easier to understand! ;o)

Ahhhh, that's what it's called "readers block"! I've been having that issue with books on CD -- I get through 1 (or maybe 2) discs and give up!

I must say, Fatin, no wonder you are having a hard time choosing ... the books you listed are classic but definitely not easy reading. I'd go for the shortest ... ;o)

Haha I'm not sure if that what it's called but I was sick of trying to explain it to people so I just named it that. I also call it an intellectual block because at times like these, I can't even watch an intelligent movie!

Yes, I think that may be the problem, I've only read a few pages of Gatsby, Karamazov, and two chapters of Tropic of Cancer and Slaughterhouse 5. It's sad when I can't get into the mood to enjoy them. I'm currently reading The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. :) It's a relatively easier read.

Fatin, I'd read The Great Gatsby. It's pretty short and SO good! You'll definitely enjoy it! (:

Thanks, Liz! I'll probably read Return of the King first, since I'm already in the middle of the LotR series, but then I'll read it. (: Just get two out of the way in one month!

Fatin, I absolutely loved Slaughterhouse-5 and I finished it in less than a week. It may be more of a masculine read, I'm not sure, I see you also mentioned Steinbeck, I also chewed up anything of his I've read, I just love his prose. Slaughterhouse 5 is very short though, so maybe go with that one, and if you like it, then I'd say Steinbeck ought to float your boat as well.

Dermo, yes, I was forced to read The Pearl by Steinback in 8th grade. I didn't enjoy it then because...well, my teacher...we just didn't click. She refused to listen to any opinion but her own. I read it a couple of years later and loved it! So I'm sure I'd like Grapes of Wrath. And I've read a little of the Slaughterhouse five. I have a habit of highlighting parts I like, and although I'm just 20 pages in, I have quite a bit highlighted. I just can't seem to get into the flow.

Thalia, I had borrowed my friend's copy Gatsby, but mine should be arriving soon enough. I'll give it another shot then. :)

Amanda - You can either grab the url to one of your personal shelves and paste it here, or you can create a shelf with your name among the group shelves. I don't see one there that has your name, so I'm guessing you haven't created one yet. Just search for a book to add, and if it's already shelved for the group, add a shelf with your name via the drop-down list, and the system will both create your shelf and add your shelf name to the list of shelves for that book. Repeat until you have shelved all the books you want. :) (Or you can simply list some books here for someone to choose from.)

Hayley, since your profile shows you are currently reading a fantasy novel, I'll suggest mixing it up a bit with a classic. I remember liking Persuasion when I read it many years ago, and Austen is rarely not enjoyable. Try that one!

THIS is a great challenge for me! Because I have fallen off the dusty wagon...and I'm down to the books that are hard for me to get into...even though I want to, I really do....but there's always something better...

The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of my favorite reads ... as well as anyone I've suggested it to! ;o)

Jimi, I found Wuthering Heights to be a slow and boring read, I've tried reading it thrice, and somehow I never make it past the second chapter!
As for Les Miserables, that's on my list as well, but somehow I managed to order volume two instead of one! My friend's said that it gets very dry in the middle, but the book's worth it.

Jimi-Carol & Fatin, Les Mis is a good read - as long as you get a good translation & are prepared for a few chapters of randomness in the middle :)
I've never been able to get into Wuthering Heights either (despite numerous attempts to get me reading it on my sister's part ;P)

LOL :) That is why they are in my dusty books category; they both seem to take an effort to read. So Les Mis it is :)

Alright, Thalia...I finished it. It is good. You WILL add it to your list of 'books that made you cry'. It is not an easy read (while the words and narration propel you through) because you feel as if you can't stop, but you should...because...just because.

I've seen the play "Les Miz" at least 3 times, but have never read the book, although it IS on my "dusty" shelves. The size of is daunting ... is there a "Reader's Digest-ed" version? ;o) Enjoy!

I also have Wuthering Heights on that "dusty" shelf -- maybe I should dust one of them off?!?

I've read Wuthering Heights and it is difficult to follow at times. I have it as one of my "to be read again" books. I remember that I liked it and parts of it are stuck in my memory. I am thinking if I read it a few more times I will understand it better.

I read Persuasion. It wasn't the best Austen but it was good, definitely different from The Gargoyle (which I couldn't even finish, oops :S). I'm now on Nemesis.

I'm really putting off getting my hands on Wuthering Heights but know I'll have to read it at some point so my full respect to all who have read it!!

I've just about given up on Wuthering Heights. I don't even know where my copy went.
I'm slowly moving through Lolita. I get disgusted and then I have to put it down.
