Donna | 10 comments I recently read "The Reading Group" by Elizabeth Noble. In it there is a list of 12 books, chosen by the reading group members. In the book, they are read one a month over a year. After discussing this with my cousin, we've decided to give it a go. There are books on there that I'd not normally read, but I'm always willing to try something new! The books are:
1) Heartburn (Nora Ephron)
2) I Capture The Castle (Dodi Smith)
3) Atonement (Ian McEwan)
4) The Woman Who Walked Into Doors (Roddy Doyle)
5) Guppies for Tea (Marika Cobbold)
6) My Antonia (Willa Cather)
7) The Memory Box (Margaret Forster)
8) Eden Close (Anita Sheve)
9) An Instance of the Fingerpost (Iain Pears)
10) Rebecca (Daphne Du Maurier)
11) The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho)
12) Girl With a Pearl Earring (Tracy Chevalier).

I don't think I'll read them in the order they are in the book and I'm going to do it alongside my 2013 challenge of 40 books.

Hayley | 37 comments I'm well up for this. I think I will read them in order.

Also, rather spookily, I had a dream last night about reading the Alchemist, which I did not know was a book on this list...

I've ordered 'The Reading Group' so aiming to get that read by 1st January

Donna | 10 comments I'd convinced myself there was a Dicken's in there....but obviously not! I'm starting with Atonement - just because it's on my shelf and I'm fed up of seeing Keira Knightley's face gurning out of the cover at me....

message 4: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments I'm starting 'The Reading Group' tonight :-)

message 5: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments Just finished 'The Woman Who Walked into Doors' struggling with Atonement...

message 6: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments I'm going to order Heartburn ready to read in January

message 7: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments I've just started 'Heartburn' today and although I didn't have high expectations of it, I've so far been pleasantly suprised and have found it to be quite entertaining.

Just ordered next month's 'I Capture the Castle'

message 8: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments I've got Atonement and The Woman Who Walked into Doors ready for swapsies in February. Will try to get another one read for then too!

message 9: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments Have just finished 'I Capture the Castle'. I really liked it.

Have just see that the book they read in March was 'Atonement' so might keep that for Easter when I'll have time to sit down and read big chunks of it.

message 10: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments I've finished the Alchemist as well, so that will be coming with me this weekend. Can't find "The Woman Who Walked Into Doors"....hopefully it will turn up. I've obviously put it somewhere very safe.

message 11: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments You can't find it because you already passed it on to me!

message 12: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments How have I passed it on??? Have I seen you since I read that? Oh my, I've been hunting high and low for it! Dementia corner here I come x

message 13: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments I finished 'Atonement' on Friday. It wasn't as bad as I'd prepared myself for but I didn't particularly like it.

I'm looking forward to starting 'The Woamn Who Walked into Doors' this week.

message 14: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments I've nearly finished 'The Memory Box'; I'm really not sure about it...I don't know if I like it or not. Will decide when I come to the end. Glad Atonement wasn't as bad as you feared!! x

message 15: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments What did you think of 'The Memory Box' in the end? I've just finished 'Guppies for Tea'. It was ok but felt that it was caught between chick-lit and trying to be something deeper.

Have you got 'My Antonia'? If not I'll order it. x

message 16: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments It was ok, it just sort of didn't do anything or go anywhere....I have been looking out for My Antonia at Oxfam, but so far it's not turned up yet. I have got girl with the pearl earring on the go now too. xx

message 17: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments I'll get memory box then

message 18: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments Just finished My Antonia. It was ok but didn't have much of a plot.

message 19: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments Although it pains my OCD tendencies to do so, I'm going to read Eden Close for July, then if you wouldn't mind bringing The Memory Box to Turkey, I'll swap you for My Antonia

message 20: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments Phew! OCD Crisis averted - I have The Memory Box so can continue to read in order :-)

message 21: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments Ha ha! Well done on averting your crisis...... X

message 22: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 37 comments OMG! Just realised that it is the last day of September tomorrow and I've not even managed to get hold of a copy of An Instance of the Fingerpost. Doh!

Have just ordered a copy from Amazon

message 23: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments Good job I'm not following the order. October already ...... Mental..... Xx

message 24: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (thismommareads) I would like to do this.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I think it's cool that your both doing this together. It sounds like you are both having fun. I hope you two continue with a new list next year. If you do I wouldn't mind joining you. :)

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I have to say I did read The Alchemist and I thought it was a really good book.
