Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Since the Wolves in the Land of Salmon read (Oh, I really love that book!) I have read Always Watching by Chevy Stevens The Revolution Was Televised The Cops, Crooks, Slingers and Slayers Who Changed TV Drama Forever by Alan Sepinwall Ink (Paper Gods, #1) by Amanda Sun XO (Kathryn Dance, #3) by Jeffery Deaver and The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I never got these notifications!! Great everyone, I'll update the spreadsheet today :)

I've just finished The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray . It was good, very spooky at the end, but I found the main character a little bit too vapid for my taste.

I've started 11/22/63 by Stephen King today.

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Claire I loved 11/22/63; hope you do too.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments It's my first Stephen King book :-)

message 1205: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments It's an excellent book to start King's readings :-)

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I'm not sure how many I'll read, I'm not a horror fan. In fact, I stayed up late last night to finish The Diviners as it got really spooky and then had to read a couple of chapters of Pride and Prejudice before I went to sleep :)

message 1207: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments King has written some great books that aren't in the horror genre;
the one you're reading now,
The Green Mile,
The Shawshank Redemption (which is actually 4 novellas, not one a horror story and also includes the amazing Stand By Me (which also was made into a movie)
Joyland
and I'm sure others I'm not aware of or have forgotten; perhaps others can add to this list for you.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Thanks Cathie. I'm enjoying it so far, 40 pages in, I'll see how it goes :D

We're now 40% finished for the August challenge. We're mostly short on '6's, continents and ancient times if anybody's got anything that fits for those. Any other category is good too though :)

message 1209: by ShoSho (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 446 comments I'm going to start the 6 book in Dresden series tomorrow. The continent is a hard one! Most of the books I read are in north America!

message 1212: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Maybe near where you need it to be?

message 1213: by ShoSho (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 446 comments After much more thinking I have come to the conclusion that it's in Antarctica!

Cathie, my partner absolutely loves wolves. I may have to invest in that book as a present to him. Thanks for the link!

Kme_17, Beastly was amazing, wasn't it? Those other two books in the same comment seem like they would have been eye openers.

I don't know if I could keep up with you guys reading wise, but I'll certainly linger around just for ideas on what to read next :D

Beastly was great! never tell was a great murder mystery with a kick butt female detective which is always fun to read : )

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Nicole, the Wolves in the Land of Salmon by David Moskowitz is a beautiful book and is packed with so much information; it's definitely worth being on anyone's shelf :-)

message 1218: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments So sorry I've been such a slacker. School has started back and I am feeling swamped. I spent 10 hours over the weekend writing lesson plans for 2.5 hours of instruction time. My principal wants ALL kinds of stuff in them. I've only read one book in almost two weeks!!! I think I'm having withdrawals LOL

I'll try to find a continent book to read next. Maybe one of my Harlequins will be somewhere else ;)

message 1219: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments Oh! The one book I read was The Baby Bargain (Once A Marine, #1) by Jennifer Apodaca

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Hope it settles down soon Susan, the first few weeks back are always manic here too!

I've found a couple of books that will fit for continents - I think I can find Antartica, South America and possibly Africa, if I can read them all!! :) Unless someone beats me to it :)

Also, what do you think about Arthurian legends, anybody think they're set in 'ancient times'?

Claire, according to Wiki, Arthurian legends are set in "ancient England."

Again, thank you Cathie for the rec. I think you've just found my partner's Christmas present for me :D

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Hi Everyone!!! Hope you're all ok.

In September, there is another inter-team challenge but this one is a bit different. The number of books that have to be read is determined by who is taking part and only their books count. The books that count have to fit in one of three categories (which are yet to be decided on exactly, I thought I'd see who wanted to play first).

There is absolutely no pressure on anyone to play this one, I'm happy to do it by myself if no-one else wants to join me but, if anybody else wants to play, let me know :) If you'd rather just read what you want to read without fitting them in anywhere, that's absolutely fine :)

I hope that makes sense. If you could let me know what you think in the next week or so or if you have any questions (if you want me to work out how many books you'll 'have' to read, I'll do that too [although the requirement can be split however we want between those of us who are playing]). If I don't hear anything, I'll assume you're just going to read normally (but you're welcome to change your mind nearer the time :) )

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I really really hope that makes sense!! I'll let you know shortly how we're doing with the August challenge, I'm just updating now.

message 1226: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments I'm going to decline in the September challenge.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments We're 65% of the way finished and we've completely finished off two categories, we now need books to fit:
Ancient times (I'm halfway through one which will then fill the requirements for that one), South America, Australia and Antarctica (I've messaged the Mods about that one!) And then the other books fit where ever they go :)

message 1228: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Could we get some more information? How many books? Who posted the challenge? Any rules? When would we know what the categories, etc?

Is there a posting where this challenge is talked about?

I'm probably in because I love challenges and have a zillon going on, but I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into, lol

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Susan (susayq) wrote: "I'm going to decline in the September challenge."

Yes... hang on.....

message 1231: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments For August, please refresh my memory about the rules. The first three categories in the spreadsheet HAVE to be completed, correct? And then at least one book in each of the other categories until we reach 75 books?

message 1232: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments School is going well. The writing of lesson plans and submitting is absorbing all my weekend time. I'm hoping it will get easier as it goes :)

Yes, that's correct, but we have to read 75 books that fit somewhere in total. Two of the 'have to be completed' categories are finished and of the others, only one has nothing in yet but I should finish a book for that today. That leaves three for the continents and then the remaining books need to fit somewhere in the categories.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments Alright. Got it! I'm reading On the Way to the Wedding (Bridgertons, #8) by Julia Quinn and it fits in the transportation category :)

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments September Challenge

Here is the preliminary info on the challenge....

Basically..... It's a Moderators challenge for Book Advantage Points, like the July and August ones have been. The number of books is determined by who's taking part. For instance:
If it's just me taking part, I'll have to read 10-15 books which qualify to get the BAPs (1 BAP if I read 10 books - 4 BAPs if I read 15).
If it's just me and Cathie (for example) we'll have to read between 20 and 30 books between us in the month.

The books that are read need to fit in to one of three challenges. At least 1/3 of the books have to fit in the Book a Day challenge and then at least one will need to fit for each of an A-Z challenge that we pick and another challenge we choose. (One challenge per book though!) The rest of the books can be spread how we see fit.

EDIT: When I have an idea of who's playing, I'll suggest some challenges and see what we like the look of :)

I hope that answers some questions, let me know if there are more, there's a Captain's discussion thread going too to bash out any problems so I can ask there if I don't know the answer :)

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Susan (susayq) wrote: "School is going well. The writing of lesson plans and submitting is absorbing all my weekend time. I'm hoping it will get easier as it goes :)"

I hope so too. I'm sure you've told me before (and sorry if you have, I've got a brain like a sieve!) but do you teach a specific subject or do you teach all the subjects? Here, younger children generally have one teacher for everything and then 11/12 years+ they have different teachers for each subject.

Susan (susayq) wrote: "Alright. Got it! I'm reading On the Way to the Wedding (Bridgertons, #8) by Julia Quinn and it fits in the transportation category :)"

Brilliant! Thank you :)

Does anybody think 'Magic Portals' is stretching it a bit on the 'transportation' front? lol

message 1237: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments I'd say Magic Portals works for transportation :)

I teach only social studies (world history to be specific), reading, and writing. And I have 11/12 year olds. It's 6th grade here. My home room class is soooo behind. I'd be lying if I told you they were working on a 5th grade level. I'd venture to say its more 4th grade. Like I said, behind. It's so sad. And my second class is like a dream in comparison and they're barely working on level.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I might put it back in and see what the Mods say :)

What does social studies cover (apart from world history)? Do you have separate history subject classes as well or do they all fit under your subject? And what is home room? Sorry for the questions! The school system in the US is so different to the one here in the UK. I'm interested in how things differ :)

message 1239: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments Social studies covers history, geography, sociology, psychology, government studies and economics. Typically American elementary children get a smathering of all the topics. In Louisiana, 6th grade focuses on world history from hunter-gatherer times through early civilizations up until Renaissance. I get to teach the beginning of the major world religions too.

Home room is the group of kids that start their day with me. In our school there are 2 6th grade classes and I teach them all reading, writing, and social studies. The other teacher has math and science. It's about 40 kids total.

So a book a day means we have to read a book every. single. day.?

A-Z challenge means we have to start an A-Z challenge or we can use one of our existing ones even if it's with a different group here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ?

How is it determined how many books every person reads' is it 15 books for the challenge (that's what I think my brain figured out, for the most BAP's)

message 1241: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 450 comments And I don't mind answering your questions :)

No, sorry, I meant to dig out the link to that, it's a challenge where each 'date' of a month - 1-31 has a specific criteria, not one book every single day. I'll find the link and post it now!!

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments The link for the 'Book A Day' challenge is here.

For instance, for the number '4' ' 4th of July is Independence Day. Read a book with a red, white and blue cover, or that is set on the US, or has the US flag on the cover. Or read a book where the main character is fighting for his independence or for some greater good.'

We don't have to complete the challenge, just read enough to make up a third of our goal.

Does that sound better? :)

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Cathie wrote: "A-Z challenge means we have to start an A-Z challenge or we can use one of our existing ones even if it's with a different group here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ?

Sorry, just noticed the other questions!

A-Z is one of the NBRC A-Z challenges (there's a list posted on that link I put above) but we only need to do one book from that challenge although we can do more.

The other challenge is one of the other NBRC challenges too, just not an A-Z one.

It's between 7 and 9.9% of each participants goal for the overall challenge (or for the team, it's the total goal of all the participants):
7-8.2% gives 1 BAP
8.33-9.8% gives 2 BAPs
9.9% and above gives 4 BAPs

The numbers I gave were just an example. But if it worked out at 15 'per person' taking part, we could read any combination, some reading more, others reading less.

Does that make sense?

message 1245: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Yes it makes sense Claire :-). I'm going to go look at the link you posted. Thank you. I'll get back here and let you know if I'm in for sure.

Wow, you teach a wide range then, what's your favourite part?!! Here each of those is usually taught as a separate topic, sometimes grouped under 'humanities' but usually only in as much as 'humanities and the sciences'!

Thank you :) I tend to be quite curious when it comes to other countries and their systems :)

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments Cathie wrote: "Yes it makes sense Claire :-). I'm going to go look at the link you posted. Thank you. I'll get back here and let you know if I'm in for sure."

Great :) I have to admit, I was pretty confused until I started explaining it for you. That's why it's taken me so long to get around to posting it, I couldn't get my head around it!!

message 1248: by Cathie (last edited Aug 17, 2013 10:28AM) (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments So the alphabet challenge is any A-Z challenge on NBRC?

And the 3rd challenge is read a book for any challenge that we belong to on NBRC excluding the Book a Day and an A-Z Challenge?

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments It's got to be one we pick together, so all the books which count for A-Z have to be for the same A-Z, same for the challenge. So we couldn't do a different 3rd challenge each.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments And I don't think we have to belong to it, as we don't have to finish it, or we can belong as a team.
