Thanks Carol! Yeah, it's actually very specific tropes to female-lead UF that are driving me nuts--abusive men, domination-submission, melting protags--basically the usual stuff. I started Snake Agent and am loving it so far. And I forgot about the BOM--Bridge of Birds will also be fun.

Sharon Michael | 572 comments I'm never quite sure where to put the Dean Koontz books ... they seem to be 'not quite' several different classifications.

Several of his earlier books are absolute favorites, on my shelves and re-read often, but the last one I read and actually liked was "Sole Survivor" in the late 90s.

I pick up one every so often and try again, but can't say I've been impressed. Most are DNF and the few that I have finished (two?) have been less than memorable.

Oh, well ... am going to try again. Breathless by Dean Koontz

Have you read Life Expectancy? It's my favorite. I like it even better than Watchers. But I think he's been in a little bit of a 'future ruined by nano-bots or gene mutation' rut, lately.

message 204: by David (new)

David Merrill | 17 comments The Magic Mountain, believe it or not. Fortunately, the group I'm reading it with on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has an extended schedule, so I can get ahead and read other things in between. I'm quite enjoying it, though.

message 205: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (originally_elle) | 110 comments Finished Crown of Midnight Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and it was so so good! I loved it and now it's going to be torture having to wait for the next book!

Im currently reading Divergent Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth Ive read so many good reviews that I really couldn't resist anymore. So far so good. I like the story line and the idea of the factions. I havent been able to put it down!

message 206: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenmarylesshankman) I just finished "Ender's Game"--now I can't wait for the movie! I saw the trailer last night, and it practically made me cry, it was that good.

message 207: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments I'm not a movie goer so will probably not see the movie, but although I'm not a fan of the author, Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are favorites. Don't care for the rest of either series (or his other series) but do go back to these two for a re-read on occasion.

Helen (helenmarylesshankman) Sharon wrote: "I'm not a movie goer so will probably not see the movie, but although I'm not a fan of the author, Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are favorites."

I was about halfway through the book when I heard about his dumbass statements. Strange that he has such backwards opinions...considering that "Ender's Game" seems to be a plea for understanding between different kinds of people.

As for the movie trailer--in the book, the descriptions of the battle games were so detailed and wordy, and went on and on--but when you see it appear in the trailer, these kids floating and somersaulting through the air, it's pure magic.

message 209: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I recently finished The Well of Ascension and today I finished Doctor Sleep.

I have no idea what I'm going to read next.

message 210: by Snarktastic Sonja (new)

Snarktastic Sonja (snownsew) | 258 comments I inhaled Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series. If you love Mercy or Kate, I highly recommend this series.

I have picked up Midnight Riot and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Y'all have just about convinced me to pick up Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was, though I can't get it from the library.

Oh, and, I am listening to Steelheart. This is my introduction to Brandon Sanderson. I am enjoying it.

message 211: by Helen (new)

Helen I've started Boy's Life, I'll go to the thread when I'm done. Enjoying it so far, about 10%.

message 212: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah The latest books I've read have been very good, though not in the Fantasy category : The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwoodwhich was had Fairy tale elements in it , but was otherwise more realistic
A novel that was detective-mystery and supernatural elements in it from of all places Yemen! A Land Without Jasmine by Wajdi Al-Ahdal and now I just started an Urban Fantasy novel that takes place in Russia The Secret History of Moscow by Ekaterina Sedia It looks promising!

message 213: by Tony (new)

Tony | 32 comments Just finished The L eft Hand of God
I enjoyed it and will defo finish the series, hopefully the religious nutters get their just desserts
Being a devout atheist myself I always like to see that

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments I'm reading book 2 of Rob J. Hayes 's trilogy The Ties that Bind which consists of The Heresy Within The Colour of Vengeance and The Price of Faith

I picked it up because of the high rating...and so far I'm not at all disappointed. Actually, I'm enjoying book 2 the way I have enjoyed book 1 (and I'm sure it'll be the same for book 3)

If you have not read this author yet, I suggest you give his work a try. It's really good.

Terry Simpson | 261 comments Reading Blood Song Just finished Sanderson's Steelheart Steelheart was all kinds of awesome.

message 216: by Brunnstag (new)

Brunnstag I'll be finishing off The Ocean at the End of the Lane today- I haven't been super impressed with it so far. It's my first Neil Gaiman, and I wish I knew if it was typical of his style or not! :/

I'm also a little bit into Three Parts Dead and The Dragon Keeper which I got from the Kindle monthly book sale right after I got my Paperwhite a few weeks ago! Once I finish Ocean, I'll start either The Long War or The Dragon Reborn. I'm leaning towards Dragon right now though...

message 217: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I recently read Doctor Sleep and The Exorcist.

Now I'm reading Roadwork.

carol. | 2616 comments Finished Mistborn: The Final Empire. Doing a buddy read of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions and also reading The Thousand Names for this month's read.

Irrational is very interesting--I'm on a chapter that discusses how 'free' (predictably) triggers an irrational response, where we stop weighing the actual value and just take it because we perceive 'no cost.' Hmmm, sounds familiar with all the 'free' book samples, no?

message 219: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I am reading the latest Mercy Thompson book Frost Burnedby Patricia Briggs and loving it!
Of these types of PR-Urban fantasy series, this is in my opinion the best.

Hah. And yet time is money. Why don't we (or the people flogging the free goods) ever remember that?

I'm reading The Minority Council, the last in the Matthew Swift series. Out of all the series I've discovered in the last year, I think Kate Griffin's Urban Magic is one of the best at sucking me into the rich and gloriously imaginative world she creates. So much so that I'm utterly hooked, even though I have a certain presentiment (possibly because of the chapter titles, which are cheerful statements such as, "You can't save everyone" and "Not everyone wants to be saved") that this Will Not End Well. Despite my general tendency to avoid tragedy at all costs, I can't put it down.
The Minority Council (Matthew Swift, #4) by Kate Griffin

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments Just finished Midnight Falcon , second book of the Rigante series (1st one being Sword in the Storm

I'm still dazed by the brilliance of these books. Gemmel knows how to tell a story.

On my way to Ravenheart

message 222: by Ken (new)

Ken Hughes (kenhughes) | 15 comments I'm in Sleep Hollow: Rise Headless and Ride. No relation to the TV series or any other Sleepy Hollow exploitation, this is a fun, slow study of a modern-day boy whose life would be creepy enough even if he hadn't moved there. It takes its time to get to the headless killings, the psychic senses, and even the Katrina figure, and it's just a pleasure.

I *loved* Unfettered...it was like sitting around a campfire listening to your favorite authors tell you story from their world. It was a wonderful read and there wasn't a weak tale in the bunch.

message 224: by Brunnstag (new)

Brunnstag I just finished Robin Hobb's Dragon Keeper and posted a review. I really enjoyed it, glad I picked it up!

Now I'm continuing with Bellman & Black: A Ghost Story, which I'm hoping was not a mistake to buy. I loved The Thirteenth Tale, but so far Bellman is not as good... Also going to be working on Three Parts Dead and starting The Dragon Reborn and Dragon Haven.

message 225: by Katey (new)

Katey | 10 comments Just started The Republic of Thieves and loving it so far! Didn't do a reread of the first two, but finished up Peter Brett's The Daylight War.

message 226: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I am reading The Golem and the Jinni and loving it. It is really, really good and different!

message 227: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) I'm reading Sand Daughter which you might consider either historical fiction or fantasy. Set in the Crusades, from the Muslim side. There's a made-up society in the Hindu Kush, influenced by Pashtun/Kalash/Mongolian/Tibetan cultures, says the author in her note. You can see the legends of hidden lands that have fed in, even Prester John, though this lot is coming to aid Salah ad-Din instead of the Christians.

message 228: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) | 320 comments I'm reading Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson... another amazing world...

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments Just finished Theft of Swords and Rise of Empire (each consists of 2 books)

Reading now Heir of Novron (which contains the last 2 books of this great series.

I highly recommend this read.

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading The Republic of Thieves, Howl's Moving Castle, and am listening to The Lightning Thief on audio. All good reads!

message 231: by Helen (new)

Helen So many excellent books being read; some I've read some I covet. I'm on The Handmaid's Tale which I can't put down. Have read too late and am waking with raw eyes.

message 232: by Brunnstag (new)

Brunnstag After taking a quick break to finish God Save the Queen, I've finally started The Dragon Reborn and will be continuing with Dragon Haven. Lots of dragons I guess!

At some point I need to get on with Three Parts Dead. I'm around 20% into it, but set it aside for a few others and having trouble getting back into it...

In the Days of Humans (Third Exodus) by Terry R. Hill Just on 4th chapter but so far the book is good. And I normally don't read Sci-fi.

message 239: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Just finished A Girl and Her Monster (Rune Breaker, #1) by Landon Porter which was a free download. First book of a series and one of the best fantasy books I've read for awhile. Basic plot is fairly standard quest but some unique twists.

The editing definitely leaves something to be desired, which I don't object to as much as some readers do and the characterizations are very good and the world building interesting.

The Dark is Rising Sequence for the ....hmmmm....lost count how many times.

message 241: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Recently I read two really excellent books, The Golem and the Jinni and Waking the Moon, so it was simply torture this morning trying to read Beastly. I gave up after a few chapters. Now I am going to try The Thorn and the Blossom and hope it is better!

message 242: by Robin P (new)

Robin P I am listening to The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch, 3rd in the Gentlemen Bastards series. It goes back and forth between the story where it left off after Red Sails and a story from when Locke and his gang were young. I really like how Lynch writes but I feel this one is a bit more dragged out than it needs to be.

message 243: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Picked up Dangerous Women by George R.R. Martin at the library and found it a definite disappointment. The only story in the anthology that I read from beginning to end was the one by Brian Sanderson and would rate it 'readable' by not wonderful.

message 244: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Really, Sharon? Lots of big names there, but honestly, I guess I'm not that surprised. A lot of them also write very dark/noirish characters.

I'd given that one some thought.

I should have expected it, actually, as I'm not fond of the dark/noir type of writing in anything and
many of the current big name authors I find I don't care for. Of the 21 authors in this anthology, I've only read and enjoyed books by three and only one of those three have books that are on my favorites/re-read shelves.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm currently (re)reading Pawn of Prophesy. I've been stuck in a bit of a reading rut so I decided I'm going to stop forcing myself to read anything. I'm going to read what the mood strikes me to read. But I'm trying to make myself review any of these books (which are almost always a reread). I hope this will force me out of my rut.
