¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments How did you enjoy Kingmaker king breaker?

Mixed feelings. I enjoyed it as a whole (gave it a 4 stars). I loved how the author built her world (some would say "slowly". I won't). I loved her writing style. I loved this Weather magic. I loved the deep characterization. I loved the shift in POV. I loved, oh, I LOVED Prince Gar.

I didn't like the ever present prophecy thing (but that's just me. I believe people can change their destiny but here, oh God, they did EVERYTHING to have the prophecy fulfilled, no matter what).

I didn't very much like the changes in Asher. I understand what he's been through but still. I was a bit disappointed with him.

I also thought it would have been great to have more space dedicated to Asher mastering his powers. I mean, we knew he was practicing spells and all but I wish we could have watched him doing it (instead, we stayed in the kitchen). The transition from Innocent to Deadly would have been more credible.

As for the Doranen "colonization" (because that's what it is) and the Doranen/Olken living together but not actually living together (Doranen "superior" race), I didn't think much about it. I read Fantasy because I want something different from real life so I try not to connect the events of a book to real life events (let's avoid headaches when it's possible).

I didn't like Dathne for many reasons (manipulative being one of them). And what she did to Darran in the epilogue only emphasized that feeling. I hated her for that. I thought she was cruel. But Asher, the kind and compassionate Asher, the Asher with a heart as big as that, found it funny *shrug* Disappointed...I know it sounds stupid but this precise fact decided me to not read the sequel duology (also there's another major fact I can't talk of because I'd only be spoiling). No more of Dathne, thanks.

Another thing. It took 2 books to build the climax up but less than a chapter to the actual good/evil confrontation. I'm not for 100-pages-battles with gore and blood but, I don't know, it was just like Asher-comes-and-destroys-the-bad-guy faster than the speed of light, thank you, goodbye.

As for the villain. Not that smart really or perhaps overconfident ? (like every villain). Well.

Anyway. To sum up, I have loved this read. I highly recommend it (unless one is looking for epic battles, Elves, Dragons, Fairies...there's "nowt" of this in this duology).

message 255: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I am currently reading The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly it is definitely not for those who don't like too dark! It is just my limit. Parts of it really creep me out, but it is very good.

Terry Simpson | 261 comments Reading Promise of Blood (The Powder Mage, #1) by Brian McClellan and really enjoying it. Nice plot, action, cool characters, and a different magic system.

Jalilah, I loved The Book of Lost Things! :)

Yes, I'm reading this one too and it's another new author I will be adding to my list of favorites. He has a very well-reasoned world and a great magic system. (And it's military fantasy...I'm addicted to military fantasy, lol.)

Looks interesting but I don't think I'm in the mood for what looks to be a military fantasy with lots of political intrigue. but I know some people who would love it...

That has been on my To read shelf for a while now. Please let us know how you like it Carol!

Michelle, yes, Book of Lost Things is great! I am now reading something completely different. I was curious to find out how the Sookie Stackhouse series ended so am reading Dead Ever After

message 262: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being and am listening to The Sea of Monsters.

message 263: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments I rather liked Unbearable Lightness.
I finished Alif, which I liked a great deal, and now am deciding whether or not to re-read or to venture on. I have a few reviews waiting to be written!

message 264: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm liking The Unbearable Lightness of Being a lot. I also started The Rose and the Thorn at the gym today (I like to read my Kindle on the treadmill).

The first five books of the Wheel of Time series are awesome! Books 6 to 8 get a bit bogged down, but I've read book 9, Winter's Heart, really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to reading book 10 soon.

Benjamin (ben21) Just starting Promise of Blood

message 267: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (imhrien) | 433 comments Just finished a rather fun (and also frustrating) MG book, Museum of Thieves as well as Theft of Swords , which was a mistake because now I have to wait two days for the stores to open to buy the second book.

Trotting through The Hobbit in the meantime.

message 268: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Just finished THE BEAR WITH TWO SHADOWS by Roland Yeomans which I actually wanted to like more than I did. Good (and somewhat unique) combinatation of Native American and Celtic mythologies, wonderful main character. However, seemed as if the author was being deliberately obscure about things, perhaps laying the groundwork for the future books.

message 269: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Reading Crucible of Souls which is turning out to be really good

message 270: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I finished Cujo last week. I never took so long to finish such a short book.

Now I'm reading Hard Magic. It is really good so far.

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments Codex Alera (starting with Furies of Calderon) is one of my fav series Benjamin. You'll enjoy yourself throughout the 6 books. I'm sure of it.

Just started The Outstretched Shadow

Benjamin (ben21) Good to know Ferial! Now on Academ's Fury

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Haven't been by in a while. just seeing what everyone is reading. Fantasy wise I'm reading the 14th Repairman Jack book and just finished the last...but chronologically the second Riyria book.

message 276: by Robin P (new)

Robin P Listening to The Spirit Thief. Entertaining but seems kind of lightweight, I wonder if it is considered YA.

message 277: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Working on The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao before I get to The Neverending Story. I wasn't expecting all the geek/nerd literary references, but I'm enjoying them immensely.

I'm reading it right now.

I'm only 16 chapters in but...I don't get YA per se...but I do feel a complete separation between me and the characters. I find it easy to put down...in fact, haven't picked it up in a week. I don't care about any of the characters and I no longer care what's happening. It's all too distant.

I read this over the summer in its omnibus The Legend of Eli Monpress. I had no idea it was three novels in that one volume - it was such a "light read". In one of the author's interviews she even stated that the series was begun to be:

"... a long running, episodic spectacle with each volume containing its own adventure and a large cast of characters that grew and deepened with each installment. Think any popular TV show ever and that's what I was shooting for."

Like so many of the "installment" fantasy series, I sort of relegate these reads to airplane layovers and long car trips.

message 281: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) It's been a while since I've checked it, so I'll just update you on what I'm currently reading. On my Kindle I'm reading The Blinding Knife. My reading is slow going (partly because I've been binging Dexter), but I'm determined to finish it. On audio I'm listening to The Titan's Curse. I'm really enjoying the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series.

Michelle Kobus (michellereads7) Reading Iron Hearted Violet. Seems good, but starting to slow a bit.

message 286: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 50 comments I've just finished Ammianus Marcellinus off, and have just barely begun Three Men In A Boat. My next sci-fi/fantasy (I'd class it as fantasy but others consider it sci-fi) will be The Ace of Skulls, the fourth Tales of the Ketty Jay instalment. I'm really rather looking forward to it.

message 287: by malrubius (new)

malrubius | 71 comments Just finished Heir of Sea and Fire. I think I missed something. Not sure what.

Now reading The Lives of Tao.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1409 comments I love The RiddleMaster series. Heir of Sea and Fire was my least favorite. The last book explains some things.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1409 comments Heir of Sea and Fire (view spoiler)

Course that's really the basics.
I like to think of the three books as all one.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments One of my favorite series to.

Michelle Kobus (michellereads7) Finished Iron Hearted Violet, really let me down; now I'm reading Shadowrise by Tad Williams. Much better.

Yeah, thanks. It seemed like McKillip changed her mind halfway through about what to do. The whole first half was just thrown away. I'll still read Harpist in the Wind because I enjoy her writing style so much.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I don't know...

Anyway the first volume is still my favorite. I wasn't thrilled at the way the story went, but it's written so well.

message 297: by Konnie (new)

Konnie (Kontexts) | 32 comments Just finished the first of The Sandman series. Have the second on order. (I know - it took me long enough to figure out it was out there.)

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô | 48 comments Just finished The Final Redemption (Mageborn series). I have loved this read. The author has promised prequels. Can't wait as it'll give plenty of answers.

Will now start Scriber. I've heard plenty of good things about this book.

message 299: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah I am reading The Moon's Wife by A.A. Attanasio. I found the first chapter rather silly and actually stopped reading it for a while. Now I am glad I started again because it is getting good! The ideas are quite interesting, one of them being that our entire civilization is a result of a spell that was cast over 5000 years ago!
