Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Happy Canada Day fellow Canadians! What are you doing to celebrate? I went on a big 8km walk this morning. I am going to do what I can to stay cool today. It has been a heat wave where I am for over a week now and the news says it is going to be like this all summer.

What are you best stay cool ideas?!

message 405: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi | 336 comments Happy Canada Day Jodi! I am unfortunately super bogged down with schoolwork and today is one of my only days to catch up so I won't really be celebrating :(
I totally hear you about the heat! It's awful! My apartment has windows all on one side too so the heat just gets trapped and doesn't circulate at all!
As for beating the heat, I have found having my feet in a tub of cold water helps a lot as well as a cold cloth on my head makes a huge difference!

Delmy (needfulreads) | 346 comments Happy Canada day!! I haven't made any plans yet, we shall see! :)

Catherine | 1561 comments Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians! I'm in the USA but I salute you all!

Sorry to hear you are having a heat wave ... it hasn't been too bad here yet, but instead of heat we've been getting a ton of rain. When it is hot out, I'm a wimp -- I run my air conditioning all summer! I find that ceiling fans help a lot and I would suggest lots of cold drinks! Stay hydrated! :)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments The computer I was using to keep track of my challenges crashed :(. I don't know where I'm at on all of my challenges so that really stinks. I'm definitely going to try for my over all reading goal but as far as challenges I don't know if I will complete them. Hopefully the computer can be fixed and they'll still be there... That's what I get for not using Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to track my challenges. I thought just saving a document on my computer would be much easier. At least I know better for next year :).

message 409: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Aww, Alisia, I'm so sorry to hear that! Computer crashes are the worst. I hope everything gets recovered!

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I was wondering everyone's opinion on the book Go Set A Watchmen. I have heard things about it being a money making ploy and that it was not actually written by Harper Lee. I am on a waiting list for my libraries Audio of To Kill A Mockingbird so I can re-familiarize myself before reading the sequel, but, is it worth it?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Alisia, I got the audio version Go Set a Watchman from my library the day it came out. It's only 6 hrs 57 min, and Reese Witherspoon does an excellent job of narrating. The portrayal of some characters, particularly Atticus Finch, differs from what you'd expect after To Kill a Mockingbird. Some people love it and others do not.

If you can get the audiobook through your library, I'd say listen to it and decide for yourself.

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I'm not quite sure where to share this, hopefully it is fine here...

I just finished reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This book is one of my new favorite books, one of the best books I have read in a long time! I listened to the audio which is narrated by the author and it was fantastic! I loved it so much I'm going to purchase the print version because there is some artwork in it I'm interested in seeing. It is heartwarming and hilarious, and I think it is a book that anyone age 13+ could enjoy.

I also discovered a sub-genre that I am super into called Grit-lit. I had never heard of it until I finished reading Fay, recently and I was looking for suggestions for similar books. Fay is another book that I recommend if you are into gritty novels that read like you are watching a film. This one is for adults only, however.

I loved these two books so much I had to share, so if you are stuck on what to read next, there are two recommendations for you!

message 421: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Thanks for the recommendations, Alisia! I've been planning to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for a while, and I'll move it up my list.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments And thank you, everyone, for the nice notes! Here's a photo of me and my husband (and my dress). :)

Our ringbearer walked down the aisle with our rings tied to a beautiful copy of Stardust, our table cards were bookmarks, and our table names were 10 of our (collective) favorite books:
East of Eden
The Martian Chronicles
City of Stairs
The Stars My Destination
Cloud Atlas
Oryx and Crake
1Q84
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
The Count of Monte Cristo

message 423: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1561 comments Beautiful, Kara! And I have not read all of your table name books, but I loved Oryx and Crake and IQ84.

That's so beautiful Kara! Amazing dress!!

Are both you and your husband booklovers?

Apropo.. I'm not english native, and I always wonder..

Hub means husband right? And then there's boyfriend/girlfriend.

But what would you say if you mention your boyfriend that you live with, but not married?

Anyway, congrats Kara!!

message 426: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Kara, thanks for the pics, you look gorgeous and extremely happy! I'm so glad for you :-)

What a gorgeous dress!....and such a beautiful bride. :) Your husband is looking quite handsome, himself. So happy for you.

Cassandra | 5832 comments How wonderful, Kara! Thank you for sharing a bit of your day with us. I love the idea of a bookish wedding, and your dress is absolutely gorgeous.

Was it hard to choose the 10 collective favorite books? Were there overlapping favorites, or did you each choose five separately?

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments Kara you look so beautiful and your dress is so lovely! What an amazing way to incorporate a love of books in to your day.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Thank you, everyone! We had the best day. :)

To answer some of the questions: my husband (!) is also a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ member though not part of this group. He reads almost as much as I do, and we have similar taste in books--the books we choose were our collective favorites. We both read and loved them all. You can see that we're pretty heavy into science fiction.

message 438: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hi Meryl! We're happy to help recommend books, but it would help us if you told us some of your favorite authors or books that you've really enjoyed in the past. Everyone has different tastes, and that will help tailor recommendations to you.

message 439: by meryl (new)

meryl stella (merylstellagmailcom) | 7 comments my choice genres are mainly fantasy, thriller, suspense, mystery, chick lit.

I recommendThe Night Circus. It's a great book that I think appeals to most types of reader.

If you like Stephen King, here are two books I read recently that I found suspenseful/scary:
In a Dark, Dark Wood
The Night Sister

Cassandra | 5832 comments I just finished a book called An Ember in the Ashes. I really enjoyed it, and I just read that Megan (another group member) rated it five stars. It was a great and very fast-paced YA fantasy book.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments For kindle owners/readers, one of today's daily deals is Sarah Addison Allen's Lost Lake for $2.99. I read this book last year and it was really good! Just wanted to pass along the deal:)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I'm so excited! I just received a new Kindle Fire HD10 and I love it. So far I have been watching more Netflix on it than reading though! Call the Midwife is a great show BTW!

I do not however like the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ app on it. I feel like you should be able to do more on it. It won't let me view the group, or even post a basic update... I am using my android phone right now and it is more capable with Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ than my Kindle. Though nothing beats a desktop/laptop for accessing the site.

I have the same problem with the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ app on my i-Phone. Good thing I still have a laptop!

message 449: by Cassandra (last edited Oct 09, 2015 08:48PM) (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ apps are really horrible. I use Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ from my phone sometimes, but I always use the mobile browser version (which isn't very good either) but at least it allows me to do everything, however cumbersome.

I'm sure the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ team is working on it, but I wish they'd hurry up!

message 450: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4962 comments Wow this year has just been going so fast!! I have never read more varied than now, so a really good reading year.

It's my first year with challenges, and you could say I went bananas. Every one of them looked awesome. Next year I know more where my limit is though. But that's next year.

Am I the only one stressed out a bit that I have committed to way to much? Do everyone finish the challenges they signed up for?

You who have done this for years, what do you normally do when you see you have committed to a bit to much?
