Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Me too. It looks awesome! Can't wait for June My recommended book for the recommended book swap is the original peter pan though as I own it and Becca read and enjoyed it too. ^_^ thanks for wanting to be a friend Cheryl. good luck with your recommended book.

Finished yesterday afternoon - "thanks" to a flu that stuck me home! - the book I was recommented by Gemma: Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend.
It is not a book I'd choose on my own bat, and that's the first thing I've liked: Try something a bit different from my usual read.
On the whole I liked it quite a lot; it is a book I'd recommend easily to almost everyone, the idea is original and the plot gripping: you really want to know how Max is going to "help himself" thanks to the help of Budo, his immaginary friend.
The only drawback is the "happy ending":exactly as you expected it. Too "sugary", too "reassuring"...

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments I am just 50 pages in to The Girl you left behind by Jojo Moyes and it has really hooked me. :)

message 11: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I just started Peter Pan and it is pretty good so far. I am reading it for the recommendation book swap and because this was the book that inspired Brom to write the Child Thief which is a pretty good read. I'm only on chapter 2 of my ebook which has 135 pages in it so will read more tonight with Redwall.

Really nice and not something I would have pick up by myself, so thatnks again Gemma, a real good choise for me!
I've realized that I wrote what passed into my mind without following the lead Shirley kindly wrote at the beginning of the discussion.
Some questions were answered but not all; I'll see to put thigs right now:

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No never: I had never even heard about him before

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Indeed I would

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Definitly yes!!!

message 16: by Clare (new)

Clare (clarepenelopeliggins) I definitely plan to now, any in particular you would recommend?

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
I was recommended The Girl You Left Behind by Shirley.
2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
No It isn't something that I would have looked at particularly.
3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No I've not read any of this authors work before but I do have Me Before You lurking on my bookshelf.
4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
I really liked part 1 which was set before and during the first world war with the main protagonist Sophie being a feisty and likeable character.Part 2 didn't hold my attention quite as well but the end was worth my time reading the book.
5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Yes I would. It isn't an easy read though.
6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Yes count me in !!

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Clare wrote: "I definitely plan to now, any in particular you would recommend?"

Maybe The Loved One or Scoop. I really liked Scoop but have seen comments here that people find it dated and dull. I didn't much like A Handful of Dust but everything else I have read of his has been very good to excellent.

message 19: by Clare (new)

Clare (clarepenelopeliggins) That's interesting, Handful of Dust is the one people usually mention. I have been recommended Scoop before though so perhaps I'll try that next. Thanks! :)

2. Yeah I would.
3. Have not read anything by him before but his book inspired the author Brom to write the book the Child Thief which I enjoyed.
4. This was a pretty good read. I enjoyed reading the original and uncut version of Peter pan. It is much nastier than the disney version.
5. I would reccomend this to anyone who loves YA and fantasy.
6. This was fun. Would love to take part in this book reccomendation swap again.

Cheryl Hall | 138 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

Alannah recommended the Color Purple by Alice Walker.

Yes, it was on my to read list.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No, this was my first book by Alice Walker.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I liked it a lot, but it did take me a while to get used to the prose, although I do admit that it helped to define the characters. I liked a lot of the characters in this book, particularity Sophia, Celie and Nettie.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes, definitely.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
Recommended by Rahat

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily? It wasn't a book on my radar and I doubt I would have picked it up of my own accord

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

Nope, not even heard of him

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I thought it was OK. It wasn't really what I expected. The book is about two childhood friends in Bengal, India who grew up with an expectation they might marry. However, due to social custom (which the book explains well) they don't and the story follows their lives from that point.

The book is quite short and to the point. I felt it lacked in description and because the storyline felt a bit flat to me, overall the book felt like it lacked something. I have never visited India and couldn't place myself in any of the places visited in the book which was disappointing.

Good points- the characters are interesting and the social customs are discussed well. The story is alright although a bit predictable at times

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

I don't know of anybody in mind but I wouldn't advise anybody not to read it, it's short and probably a good start into the world of Indian literature (a world I do not know much about!)

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Yes, definitely. Even though this wasn't my favourite read, I would never have picked it up if it wasn't for the swap. I would like to look more into Indian literature after reading this

message 26: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
Alessia recommended Dove nessuno ti troverà by Alicia Giménez Bartlett.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
Perhaps. It's the kind of stories I like (half fiction, half true story) but I had never heard about the author before the swap.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
I liked it really a lot. It was engrossing, a real pageturner and I like this mix of fiction and real historical events.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Absolutely, yes. Unfortunately it has never been translated into English so there are available only Spanish and Italian editions.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Yes!

Unfortunately, I didn't even know the author existed but that's why I sign up for these recommendation swaps.

Leslie | 16369 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
Caolán recommended Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick to me.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
Probably not.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No - although I had read some of her articles in the Los Angeles Times back in the 1980s when I lived in L.A.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
It was excellent and a true eye-opener. I was shocked by how little I knew about North Korea and by the conditions of the country from the 1990s (and continuing today).

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Yes.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Yes :-)

Book Ninja | 213 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

I was recommended two books by Amber, one was Hunter by Wil Wheaton and the other one was The Thief of Always. Right now I am only done with Hunter so this review will be about that but as soon as I am done with the other one I will review that too :D

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

No. It was not the kind of book I would read.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

Nope this was my first time.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

It was too short! I like books which give history about the things happening or just a bit more explanation.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Since I didn't like it that much, I wouldn't.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Yes I would like to take part in another recommendation swap because this way at least I get to read books which I would never think of reading :)

Katy | 422 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

The King Must Die by Mary Renault recommended by Leslie

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

Probably not. I don't think I would have ever found it.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No
4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I liked it a lot. It was a retelling of the life of Theseus. I loved that part of the book took place in Crete, one of my favorite places. The descriptions were amazing.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

I would recommend it to someone else. Who doesn't like Greek mythology?

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Absolutely!

Thanks for the recommendation Leslie!

message 37: by Book Ninja (new)

Book Ninja | 213 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

The second book recommended to me by Amber was The Thief of Always. Thank you for the recommendation Amber :)

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

I might have picked it up but then I would have thought it would be scary and would never have read it.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No this was my first book of this author.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

It was a really good book. It was about this ten year old boy who wants excitement and adventure in his life. And that's exactly what he gets. I loved how the house was a character itself. The book was not scary at all, it was actually just a thriller.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yeah I would recommend it to my younger brother.

Shirley | 4177 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

I was recommended Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez. Anastasia kindly recommended it to me.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

No, I don't think so, although I have One Hundred Years of Solitude on my to-read list.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

Yes - I have read El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba back in the day.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

Very clever - well-written, and rather disturbing. Quite a lot packed into a small book. I have given it 3.5 stars.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes, but it might not be to everyone's taste, so I would be selective.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Of course!

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments I was recommended Water For Elephants by Sara Greun. It was recommended by Tracey.

This book has been on my TBR for ages now but I had never got round to read it. I had also heard a few bad things so I always put it off.

I have never read anything by the author.

I loved it. It had a bit of everything, romance, suspense, action. I loved the way it was narrated by Jacob as an old man, thinking about his time on the circus. I loved the elephant, Rosie and that she played such a huge part. Five stars from me!

I will be recommending this book. And will definitely take part again.

Thank you so much for this recommendation, Tracey!
