CBS (US TV network) announced yesterday its developing a new Star Trek episodic video program:




The catch is that it will only be available (US) through CBS's streaming service, . For us$5.99 a month you will be able to watch weekly episodes of Star Trek as well as back episodes of most of CBS-TV's network programming.

heck, I got the complete set of Star Trek on dvd at the local wally-world years ago...as, I suppect, every other Star Trek fan...I bet Star Trek isn't much of a draw for them...what about Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and the like? Those haven't been done to death on dvd (far as I know anyway)...I bet they would be a bigger draw for that reason

I think bringing Star Trek back is a bad idea. Based on how most new series and movies are, they're just going to mess it up and ruin it.

Oh, I'm pro a new series, although I don't know that I'm interested enough to buy a whole streaming service (esp. one that seems kinda cut-rate overall)! Better to try & fail than not to try -- we'll always have the old series & I think there's certainly potential for good things to happen, esp. as expectations for TV seem to be riing. I don't know how I feel about some of the speculation I've read that the series may try to fill in some of the earlier parts of the Federation & the trek timeline. I'm a big fan of Stark Trek & Scott Bakula, but I wasn't much interested in Enterprise. My vote would probably be for extending the timeline into the future -- show something post-Next Generation/Voyager

Apparently CBS has moved the debut of this Star Trek: Discovery back to May, 2017. .

Bummer. Hopefully this means they're getting it right.

All these different streaming services are depressing. BBC is coming up with their own, and now the one for Star Trek. I doubt that these shows will still be in Netflix and Amazon. It's getting expensive!

It's also tough when high speed internet isn't available at home. We can't even Skype at low res with out crappy connection.

If you don't have high speed internet you can always download it. That's how I watch all my movies.

Well, of course they say it's all to ensure the highest quality, etc. But it was supposed to be the flagship of CBS All Access 2017 launch, so it's kind of embarrassing. I'm sure they would've liked to have tied into the Star Trek 50th anniversary, too.

Since they're not scheduled to start shooting until November, it doesn't seem like it's a problem with the cast or set.

I'm afraid this is the reason I hope this experiment crashes and burns. Does that make me a bad person? If a dozen different networks all ask for $6/mo in streaming, it's going to get really pricey. Especially since I'm not interesting in anything else on CBS's streaming service.

It hasn't been mentioned in this topic, but CBS has previously announced they were going to release episodes weekly, not like Netflix all at once. And they don't plan to keep more than a couple of back episodes available for catch-up streaming; That's to keep Trek fans from waiting until the end of the series and then paying for one month to binge the entire thing. To watch the series, you'll have to ante up monthly for the entire run.

It's this splintering of online streaming that I refuse to support. If we have 3-4 streaming services with a wide variety of programs that's good for competition. Is everyone starts their own steaming service for their own limited productions it just becomes just a financial and logistical burden to the consumer

Ugh. That is so mean. I was thinking I'd wait to the end and binge watch. It really doesn't make sense because CBS is part of cable, right? It's like they are making you pay twice for same channel.

I'm wondering if it will be possible to rotate services. For example, CBS on January and July, HBO on February and August, TCM on March and September, etc.

Then just use that month to binge everything from that service. Especially if they have "all access" capability. Because you'd have a month to binge the new stuff from the past 6 months.

As I mentioned, CBS has the answer to that: weekly episodes & not leaving back episodes up. No binging.

Hmm. When they first advertised "All Access", I thought they were claiming it was literally that -- access to all CBS programming, past and present. I wonder when they changed that, or if my reading comprehension skills were as bad then. :)

They're really encouraging piracy between the ads & trickling out the series.

I think this is the networks' model for "current" TV shows: episodes show up for streaming a few days after they broadcast, but only a few back episodes are available. So if you missed last week's episode, you can catch up, but you can't do the entire season that way ?

E.g., I'm looking at SyFy's page (whose 2nd season finale, ep 13, airs tonight, btw.) I can watch eps S2 7-12 (most recent 6 episodes), but eps 1-6 & season 1 are "read recap", no can watch (though season 1 is available on Netflix.)

Anyone here a Hulu subscriber? How do they handle back episodes of current seasons?

It depends on the show, the network, and what deal has been brokered. For instance- you can only get the current season of Gotham or Empire, but you can watch ALL of Elementary or Sleepy Hollow.

As Natalie noted, it varies. However, the most common scheme seems to be the last 5 episodes.

And CW is supposed to change this year, since NetFlix brokered a deal for their shows. IMO, the changes are BAD for the CW shows. No current season shows on NetFlix until 8 days after the season finale -- so no intra-season viewing of episodes. Maybe on the CW site?

I tend to watch a lot of the CBS shows free on XFinity (mostly for ComCast customers, but they do have a number of free shows available to all).

Hopefully this ends up on Netflix once the season ends. If not I won't watch.

Looks like they will. I had one episode of Beauty and the Beast to finish up on Hulu last week. Then it suddenly disappeared. I remember that CW shows were going to NetFlix, so took a look. Found it on NetFlix and watched it, which finished up the series for me.

Bryan Fuller has completed his exit from this series. (EW). Fuller stepped down as showrunner a couple of months ago. Now says he left them the script he wrote and adds he's no longer involved in production.

The series also finally announced some cast: : Michelle Yeoh (Sunshine), Doug Jones (Abe from Hellboy movies), and Anthony Rapp (Rent.)

CBS still hopes to premier the show in May, 2017 (pushed back from original target of January) exclusively on their pay streaming service, "CBS All Access"

I'm a huge star trek fan but the fact that they're not keeping the whole season up is the final nail for me. If it shows up on Amazon, Netflix or Hulu some day I'll watch it otherwise I'll just skip it.

CBS says they are still casting the show, production still to "begin next week" (a couple of announced cast members are attached to other shows still in production, e.g. Sonequa Martin-Green on TWD.)

CBS hasn't announced a new target date.

At this rate, I'm starting to have doubts this show will debut before year's end. My gut tells me that this isn't the last delay we'll get.

Kind of off topic (totally?) I just finished listening to All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Watching Star Trek. It was short & a lot of fun, so I highly recommend it to any Trekkie. I normally hate self-help pap, but this wasn't the normal fare at all. I gave it a 4 star review here:

CBS All Access has finally . It will premier Sunday, Sept. 24th (the first episode will also air on broadcast TV.) Episodes thereafter will be available to stream weekly for 8 weeks until November, when they'll take a mid-season break until January before running the final 7 episodes (still weekly).

CBS already announced the plan to make new episodes available weekly and to only keep a few recent episodes available to stream. With this 2-month break, they're pretty much demanding to watch the series you'll have to commit to 6 months of All Access (and still watch commercials.)

Does running episode one on broadcast make it a 1-hour commercial for CBS All-Access?

CBS seems to have distilled all the worst elements of broadcast TV on their streaming service. :(

This is very disappointing- basically guaranteed to flop cause who watches new shows with that much hassle?!

I've always been a Trek fan, going back to before TNG. And everything about the way they are handling this series is leading me to want to pass on it, something that I never thought I would do with Star Trek. From the revamped (again) Klingons to the ridiculous uniforms that bear no resemblance whatever to canon to the arrogant way they're handling the distribution, I'm turned off enough to wait for the discs. And I'm not even sure I will be buying the discs, I might just stick them into the Netflix queue.

I am a huge Trek fan. I have all the series DVDs, watched them a bazillion times over. I quote Picard here and there and I am not a "hard" sell when it is scifi/space opera/anything space. However, the trailer was off for me, tingling my spidey senses. It felt wrong. I cannot pinpoint what but... I don't know, maybe the acting felt off or the characters.

I am not even talking about CBS's horrendous politics.

After watching the trailer a couple of times, I just don't get how this could possibly match up to the Original Series. And they say it is indeed supposed to take place in the prime universe.

We're literally a decade away from Kirk and the tech looks way better.

The whole thing looks horrid to me. I agree with your comments 100% BookHunter, but my feelings go way beyond that. To me, it doesn't look or feel like a Star Trek show. And to top it all off, I pay for Netflix and Amazon Prime to watch hundreds of videos... I won't be paying CBS to watch one.

I love Star Trek, but that distribution mode pisses me off. Also I can't watch the trailer. A region-locked trailer in 2017, really?
Everything about that tells me CBS is overconfident in their property to the point of arrogance. I mean, ensuring people have to subscribe to another provider for that one show and pay each month it airs? There's no way AbramsTrek fans jump through so many hoops to watch a new show. Hardcore fans may subscribe but if the show is more AbramsTrek than Star Trek (which with Kurtzman and Goldsman it will most probably be) they won't stay long.

Also, I wish they'd do a proper follow-up to TNG, this prequel thing is way to constraining because you can't have tech or species that were discovered in the previous shows. Enterprise had the same problems.

I agree it is hard to do a prequel with so much real life tech making the original look outdated.

Enterprise was my least favorite of the existing series.

Mine too. It did get better in the last season and got some goodwill thanks to many references to other trek shows, but that was too little, too late.

I recall a Deep Space Nine episode in which the DS9 gang go back in time to ST:ToS's The Trouble With Tribbles. Someone makes a comment on how different the Klingons look; Worf answers something like, "We do not speak of it with outsiders." Funny lampshading of upgrades to makeup techniques.

(Aside: I wanted to go find that DS9 episode on Netflix (S5E06) to check the exact quote, but found that there's an odd hole in Netflix's library of DS9 episodes that includes that episode.)

Maybe the new look of the Klingons is supposed to be an in-between evolution from the original Star Trek to the Next Generation? Maybe that can fill us in on that which Worf will not discuss. That would be the one and only reason I could accept a Klingon redesign..not that I'll be watching this show if the only way to get ahold of it is through yet another streaming service.

I never actually watched Enterprise, I didn't avoid it intentionally, I just somehow never started watching.
