I have always enjoyed both Andre Norton's books and Mercedes Lackey's. This was actually a reread for me, but it had been so many years that it was almost as good as the first time. I agree with you--the lack of the final volume is a little unsettling.

5.4--ADOPTION:OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS by Roman Espejo

This told the true stories of everyone involved in adoptions, from the birth-mother to the adopted parents (straight and gay) and the adopted children. I actually found myself tearing up at some of the stories.

and

20.3--SHUTTER ISLAND by Dennis Lehene

I won't go into too much detail about the plot, only to say I thought it was a bit contrived. OK, but not great.

This brings me to 150 points!!

Jo 10.10 Cat on the cover: Aunt Dimity and the Next of Kin by Nancy Atherton.
My cat kept me company for most of the time while I was reading this.

15.1 Preposition 'of':
The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs, and Torchwood Bay Of The Dead by Mark Morris (zombies in Cardiff. Need I say more?).

15.7 Exercise: I listened to Torchwood The Sin Eaters while walking.

25.4 book & movie: I read Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda and then watched the film.
I liked both, but the nice thing about the book is that there are more details about the characters and the relationships between the characters develop more slowly. There were also a few scenes that made me laugh which they didn't show in the film. On the other hand, I was glad they didn't show the pig slaughter!

Kristina (kristina254) 25.5 Janice's Task

The Prophecy of the Gems: Three Girls, Three Stones, One Destiny The Prophecy of the Gems: Three Girls, Three Stones, One Destiny by Flavia Bujor

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Really this deserves to be a 3½ but it's isn't a 4 star book so I've left it at 3. It was written when the author was 12 and published when she was 14! There was much about this book I liked but I think it needed a little polishing, the world she created didn't seem complete (or perhaps that parts of it didn't emerge until it was convenient for the story) however it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Sorry I got home late last night and was half asleep trying to update the board - I didn't even finish because I just couldn't keep my eyes open long enough - anyway I had added your points on my spreadsheet but didn't change it on the leaderboard but it's all fixed now.

That's such a coincidence because I'm also a librarian with a psychology degree...I never worked in the industry Because I couldn't find a job in it after I graduated so I took a library job and liked it so much I've never looked back.

I also just finished Roseann's task I had previously read How To Become A Famous Novelist as my dream job and today I started and finished Silver Bells by Luanne Rice - one of the main characters being a librarian. It was a cute but sappy Christmas romance book that had me crying - of course I cry easily so don't judge by me.

I much preferred the book to the movie. The story takes place over a number of months and this did not translate well on film. Everything felt rushed and it was difficult to understand why relationships developed.

I now wish that I had watched the film first as I am much more critical when I know the source material. I couldn't sit and enjoy the movie as I sat there thinking 'Why have they changed that?' and 'That didn't happen in the book'.

25.4 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

As is always the case with Harry Potter, I much preferred the book to the movie. The movie was good in it's own right - but it was the shortest movie of the series and was based off the longest book, so I was upset about a lot of the things they left out. I was not happy that the movie left out the entirety of the Quidditch story line that occurs in the book, nor was I happy with the way they portrayed the end fight at the Ministry. Basically, if there had never been a book series and this movie came out, I would have really thought it was great, but because the books are so amazing, the movie failed to meet a lot of expectations.

Sera Finished another task

30 1 Roseann's Task: First read a book that is somehow related to your current profession AND then read a book that is related to either your current or childhood dream job. The books can either have a character or setting that relates to that job.

The Innocent Man Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham and The 7th Victim by Alan Jacobson

I'm currently a lawyer, and after reading Grisham's book, I'm sure glad that I have worked in-house my whole career instead of practicing criminal law, which I almost started doing midway through law school. My dream job was to be a FBI profiler, but after reading the Jacobson book with all of the blood and guts, and since I am a new mom, I think that I need to find a new dream job :)

The Grisham book was very good and one I recommend for reading. The Jacobson book was not as good, quite unbelievable, but well-researched and entertaining, at least for me. I gave these books 4 and 3 stars, respectively.

Beth F | 669 comments It's funny that one of the tasks for this season is to read children's picture books (10.3) because I'd just unpacked a box of them that I'd saved from my childhood a few weeks before the task list was announced. I've been moving them around with me for the past 10+ years but never unpacked them because I was always renting and knew I was never moving into anywhere on a permanent basis.

Since we just bought our first house earlier this summer I finally decided to unpack them and give them a shelf of their own. They'll come in handy when my nephew comes to visit and in a few years when my own child is old enough to enjoy them as well.

I picked 4 of my favorites and wound up reading 164 pages according to ŷ. When I counted the pages on my own they were just a smidge over 100--but I also didn't count any of the pages where there wasn't any text. I read:

But No Elephants by Jerry Smath But No Elephants by Jerry Smath, which was a Christmas gift from my grandma in 1983 (I was 4).

And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss--also a Christmas gift from the mid-80's. My grandma bought me a subscription from a book company that mailed me 2-4 new Dr. Seuss books every other week for an entire year. I have stacks of them!

The Mitten by Jan Brett The Mitten by Jan Brett, which I always remember admiring for the illustrations...that hasn't changed over the years, they're gorgeous.

The Berenstain Bears and the Truth (First Time Books(R)) by Stan Berenstain The Berenstain Bears and the Truth by Stan Berenstain. My mom probably bought this book because she caught me and my sister telling whoppers. Woops. ;)~

I know, that's why I have not yet counted the points (I put the points earned, if any, in parentheses next to the ones that count - most of the books I have read I haven't counted yet because they are parts of incomplete multi-book tasks - hence the fact that I have read 11 books and only have 35 points!) I plan to read "The Kennedy Curse" by Edward Klein (227 pgs) in addition to the FDR book, as outlined in my reading plans. I haven't started it yet because it is my October book for my neighborhood Book Club and I want to wait to read it at the last minute so it will be still fresh in my mind during discussion.

9. Home or Work in Title: The Global Soul Jet Lag, Shopping Malls, and the Search for Home by Pico Iyer.

This is a "meh" book. Parts were pretty interesting, but it got very repetitive very fast.

Homework Assignment:
Pico Iyer makes much of the fact that the world is getting smaller and people/things/ideas from different countries are spreading to others. Think about your own town/city and your circle of family and friends. Chart the international items and people among them (and, in terms of people, all if any of their international experiences).

5. The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

15 points
9.

My homework assignment following this read would be to have each of the students right an essay about which of the 9 short stories read was their favorite and what sort of things made it that way (the content? the reader? etc)

Part two of said essay: Which young adult book they think should be recorded as an audiobook and why. Then, in my fictitious school, we would go through the process of recording an audiobook.

I am pretty ambitious in my fictitious school haha

Bluemoon (bluemoon286) | 1797 comments Finished half of task 15.5 time to study abroad (Spanish) by finishing Captain Alatriste by Arturo Perez Reverte. It was an ok read. The author kinda rambled a bit off course at times. I am not really familiar with this era of Spanish history so I was a little confused for most of the book. So no points yet I still have to get my other book from the library.
