Heather I finally finished my first task. This school year is really kicking my butt already. I've been wading my way through 180 summer assignments so pleasure reading has taken a back seat. Anyway...

For 10.10 The Cat's Meow I read
The Cat Who Went Up the Creek by Lillian Jackson Braun

Total: 10 Points

message 352: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments Knocking off my second task with 30.1, Roseann's current job/dream job task. I used Valerie Block's None of Your Business for my current job (it's about an accounting firm, which is the nearest analogue to my job as a retirement plan administrator) and J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace for my childhood dream job, where one of the characters is a veterinarian at a rural South African animal clinic. The Coetzee is a little bleak, but I really enjoyed it - I'll seek out more of his work in the future.

Current Total: 35 points

Leslie (lesliecs) | 51 comments 30.1: Roseann's Task (My Job/Dream Job)

Cinnamon Above the Clouds on the Pacific Crest Trail by Linda Y. Nowak and Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery

My current job (which I love) is working for a nonprofit group that protects, preserves and promotes the Pacific Crest Trail. I've read a lot of books about people's hikes on the PCT, but this one was unique in that it is geared towards young adults and is actually fiction (though based on the author's daughter's real life hike). It was fun to read a different kind of book about the trail.

As for the Anne book, I used to want to be a teacher, which is what Anne is doing in this installment of the series. Before that I wanted to be a writer. Anne does some writing in this book, although she doesn't get anything published until later in the series.

New total: 35 points

P.S. Cynthia, I think you have me as "Leslie CO" on the leaderboard, when really I'm Leslie CA. :)

Candace (candacerenee) No new points right now, but I'm just updating in that I've finished parts of tasks, now I just have to read the other books to complete them! I've read Nightfall by L.J. Smith for the student part of task 15.10. I've also finished Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice for part of task 25.2. And finally I finished The Cider House Rules by John Irving as 1/3 of task 25.8. Slowly getting tasks done... :)

message 356: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments I just finished Task 5.7 (I am most thankful for my family). I read This Is Where I Leave You - Jonathan Tropper.

I love reading about dysfunctional families and I love Jonathan Tropper, so this was a win/win. I love his observations, whether they're describing the pain and regret of missed opportunities or exactly what it feels like to be kicked in the balls. I laughed out loud more than once while reading and by the end of the book felt even more grateful for the family that I have. We may all have our flaws, but I think overall we're a pretty normal bunch. I wouldn't trade my husband, kids, mom, brothers, or sister for anything in the world.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) Finished Task 5.1 : To my daughter in France by Barbara and Stephanie Keating
I thoroughly enjoyed this - we follow the lives of four families between present day and WW2, between Ireland and France. There are a lot of characters, and I sometimes found myself a little confused as to who was who. I recommend this if you enjoy family sagas, big love stories and lots of emotion.

Heather | 384 comments Task 15.6 finished. I read Pictures at an Exhibition. Then, my 10 year old, my 9 year old, and I just finished doing still life drawings. It was so cool to watch their faces concentrate on what they were drawing-looking at the object, looking at the paper, back to the object. I drew a candle from an interesting perspective. My daughter said I should draw the wick, but I told her I couldn't see it from where I was and we only draw what we see. When her brother started drawing, she told him, "now make sure you only draw what you can see and not what you know is there." I felt educational today! :)

message 379: by Beth F (last edited Sep 07, 2009 11:39AM) (new)

Beth F | 669 comments I just finished the adoption task (5.4) with Sea Swept by Nora Roberts. It wasn't too bad except a major part of the plot was left unresolved so I'm assuming it carries over into the next book in the saga. I hadn't intended to rush out and read the next so I'm annoyed by that fact. If/when I get around to checking out the next book, hopefully I'll remember enough of the plot to not be confused.

Three of the main characters are grown brothers who were all adopted by a married couple when they were troubled youths. The wife died of cancer several years before the book started and the husband dies very suddenly at the start of the book. And because he had recently undertaken responsibility for another troubled boy and was in the middle of trying to adopt him as well, the three older brothers end up making a deathbed promise to their adoptive father to return home and follow through on the guardianship proceedings.

Add in a sexy social worker and the fact that virtually every single character is attempting to overcome the residual of past psychological, physical and/or sexual abuse but still manage to find a happy ending and there you have the gist of it.

Elizabeth (NC) | 184 comments I finished a couple (finally on the board!)

Sam's task (25.10) Breathers: A Zombie's Lament, S.G. Browne. I thought this was an interesting premise, but was not compeltely thrilled with the book.

Janice (25.5) Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods (involves prophecy) I LOVE this series--and even better, I read the first one aloud to my students at the beginning of the year (5th graders) and now over half my class is working through the series--I love when I see them get so excited about books.

Also, did 10.3. I read How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight by Jane Yolen; Are you Ready for Bed? by Jane Johnson and Monkey with a Toolbelt and the Noisy Problem by Chris Monroe. Those of you with small children, if you have not read this last one, look it up. It is very cute, especially if you have a young builder at your house.

I'll add them right back, though, because last night I finished Task 5.8 (multiple authors): Between the Covers The Book Babes' Guide to a Woman's Reading Pleasures - Margo Hammond and Ellen Heltzel

I gave this book 3 stars. I added some interesting books to my TBR, but I wish it would've have included more works of fiction (it was 1/3 fiction, 1/3 non-fiction, and 1/3 memoir).
