Kate (klc23) | 161 comments Would 'weird' work for the Halloween adjective?

For 25.3, would a David Sedaris book work, since he is gay and they are basically stories about his life?

Weird is fine for Halloween...Wendy will need to weigh in on the other one

Jennifer - I was hoping to keep it more along the lines of major motion pictures, but yes - if there is a TV movie from a book, that's acceptable too. :)

25.3 actually isn't my task, I'm 25.4 - you'd have to check with Wendy to be sure :) I was actually wondering the same thing myself!

message 58: by Angela (new)

Angela | 884 comments For the muliplication task, it states to multiply your age by the numbers of letters in your name. Is this supposed to be first last or first last middle? Thanks!

message 59: by Angela (new)

Angela | 884 comments Rosanne or Cynthia
I am currently a Service Mangager at a bank or a Teller Manager... I do not think I am going to come across a lot of books in this profession, so can I do something that is in the financial world or a manager of any type? Thanks

Angela that task says that it has to be somehow related to your job. That doesn't mean it has to have someone in that profession in it. Your job is in a bank so I imagine a book that has banks in or money or mortgages would count as they are all related to your job. Of course this isn't my task but that is the way I interpreted the task and it does that the book can either have a character or a setting related to your job. I think the word related makes it wider than just a book with someone in the same profession.

message 64: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 106 comments Jean Webster is Mark Twain's great niece...is that to distant for 25.2?

message 65: by Avory (new)

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) For the challenge where you read and see a play, does the order matter? I'm going to see Cate Blanchett in A Streetcar Named Desire in November, and I really would rather not give away the plot by reading it first, but it might be fun to read the play after I see it.

message 66: by Krista (last edited Aug 18, 2009 12:48PM) (new)

Krista (kacey14) A question about Wendy's task....

In Honor Of Harvey Mild, read A Book With A Positive Gay Or Lesbian Character.

Could we broaden the category to include Transgender characters? There are a couple of great books I've been meaning to read about trangender people.

Thanks Candace - I've decided to go with another book for the task and it's a major motion picture, and more recent than my first thought which was a TV movie (now on DVD) in 2005.

It's not really a matter of finding a book...it's knowing if a character is "positive" or not without reading it first or knowing someone who has. And then there's what "positive" means, which is a whole other matter of subjectivity.

For task 15.5 (Geography Lessons - Read Two Books That Take Place Countries That Correspond To Your Initials), now this is a challenge. I'll stick to Wales since I don't have a middle name. Anyone know any Welsh books ?

How Green Was My Valley, Richard Llewellyn.
Border Country, Raymond Williams.

Dylan Thomas was Welsh.

message 78: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments I'm another that's struggling with finding a book related to my profession (which is probably a good thing, because fiction about retirement plan administration would be totally yawn-worthy), but anyone who's involved in financial services/corporate America should look at Sara Paretsky's VI Warshawski novels. VI is a private detective who specializes in financial and insurance work, so that series might offer something for you. Also, Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me has an actuary as the female lead, which would probably work for anyone in insurance.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I know I usually have a lot of questions and I'm sorry. My question currently is 10.6, it says if we read a non-fiction book it has to be about Native Americans but could it be about one Native American in particular? Like I would like to read about Pocahontas.

message 81: by Kim (new)

Kim | 119 comments A question about 25.1. I have found a book called The Falls by Ian Rankin. The blurb says that the daughter on one of Edinburgh's top bankers disappears. IS this strong enough link to the banking world?
I have no trouble finding one for my childhood vision of my future career.Until I realised that you had to be good at science I wanted to be a vet!

Teresa (teresainohio) I am a magazine merchandiser, my job description is to travel to stores remove old magazines and put new magazines up, more complicated than that though LOL

Not sure if I can find a book on that LOL

Can it be something to do in the publishing world, even if books not magazines?

Wonder Woman: Love and Murder

To quote Wikipedia: "Coming of age is a young person's transition from adolescence to adulthood."

These seem to be the best lists resulting from googling "coming of age novels":

message 88: by Candace (new)

Candace (candacerenee) Cynthia - Would Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse work for task 10.6 (Native American) since Jacob Black is Quiluete? I'd consider him to be a main character in most of the Twilight books, but I wanted to know what you thought.

message 89: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1 comments Hi Wendy,

Would Mrs. Dalloway work for your task? I've been looking around online and there seems to be some discussion of lesbian themes/inclinations, perhaps not unlike The Color Purple, however I don't think anyone self-identifies as a lesbian. (I might be wrong--I haven't read it!) What say you?

Thanks!

message 90: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1 comments Hi Cynthia,

Thanks for putting this challenge together. I'm having so much fun!

For 10.7, The Heroes Task:
One of my "heroes," Bobby Kennedy, wrote The Enemy Within The McClellan Committee's Crusade Against Jimmy Hoffa and Corrupt Labor Unions. It's not an autobiography, per se. It is a first hand account of his experience as Attorney General investigating Hoffa. Would that be acceptable?

Thanks!

message 91: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) | 222 comments Cynthia, would The Brutal Art work for 15.6?
A Review:
Ethan Muller is struggling to establish his reputation as a dealer in the cut-throat world of contemporary art when he is alerted to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: in a decaying New York slum, an elderly tenant has disappeared, leaving behind a staggeringly large trove of original drawings and paintings. Nobody can tell Ethan much about the old man, except that he came and went in solitude for nearly forty years, his genius hidden and unacknowledged. Despite the fact that, strictly speaking, the artwork doesn't belong to him, Ethan takes the challenge and makes a name for the old man - and himself. Soon Ethan has to congratulate himself on his own genius: for storytelling and salesmanship. But suddenly the police are interested in talking to him. It seems that the missing artist had a nasty past, and the drawings hanging in the Muller Gallery have begun to look a lot less like art and a lot more like evidence. Sucked into an investigation four decades cold, Ethan will uncover a secret legacy of shame and death, one that will touch horrifyingly close to home - and leave him fearing for his own life.

For 0 you would read a singular novel written by an author who primarily is know for series.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I was talking about that and the question I asked about the Native American task and that doesn't answer my question. My question is different and had two parts!

message 100: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 53 comments I'm confused challenge #10.6. November Is Native American Heritage Month Read A Book Written By A Native American Author, With A Main Character Who Is Native American, Or A Non-Fictional Book About Native Americans.

Are we adjusting this challenge to be: Read a book written by a Native American Author OR a book with a Main Character who is Native American?

That would make it easier and I would have more
selections causing me to go back and look at my options again, because as far as I know Stephanie Meyer is not Native American!
