FALL CHALLENGE 2009 QUESTIONS

For 25.3, would a David Sedaris book work, since he is gay and they are basically stories about his life?
"Weird is fine for Halloween...Wendy will need to weigh in on the other one

Jennifer - I was hoping to keep it more along the lines of major motion pictures, but yes - if there is a TV movie from a book, that's acceptable too. :)

25.3 actually isn't my task, I'm 25.4 - you'd have to check with Wendy to be sure :) I was actually wondering the same thing myself!

Thanks, Cynthia! I'll look for another book more in line with the Task but will keep this one as a back-up, just in case.

I am currently a Service Mangager at a bank or a Teller Manager... I do not think I am going to come across a lot of books in this profession, so can I do something that is in the financial world or a manager of any type? Thanks

Ooooh, awesome. I have some knitting books sitting on my shelf that I need to read and I love to knit as much as I love to read!

Angela that task says that it has to be somehow related to your job. That doesn't mean it has to have someone in that profession in it. Your job is in a bank so I imagine a book that has banks in or money or mortgages would count as they are all related to your job. Of course this isn't my task but that is the way I interpreted the task and it does that the book can either have a character or a setting related to your job. I think the word related makes it wider than just a book with someone in the same profession.

In Honor Of Harvey Mild, read A Book With A Positive Gay Or Lesbian Character.
Could we broaden the category to include Transgender characters? There are a couple of great books I've been meaning to read about trangender people.

Thanks Candace - I've decided to go with another book for the task and it's a major motion picture, and more recent than my first thought which was a TV movie (now on DVD) in 2005.

I noticed you wrote a review for Tipping the Velvet...would you consider it a good fit for the 25.3 task?

Sam, most of (if not all) of Patrick Gale's books have Gay characters in who are positive if you are struggling to find a book for that task.

It's not really a matter of finding a book...it's knowing if a character is "positive" or not without reading it first or knowing someone who has. And then there's what "positive" means, which is a whole other matter of subjectivity.

Lori (BNPL) wrote: "Random Word Generator ~~ I got costing and rolling. Do I have to use that exact word or could it be cost or roll or some other variation?"If you look under the help suggestion for that task you'll see that I said (just recently) that you can visit the website multiple times and use the 9th/10th/11th word on any of those visits but it should be in the form listed on the site.

For task 15.5 (Geography Lessons - Read Two Books That Take Place Countries That Correspond To Your Initials), now this is a challenge. I'll stick to Wales since I don't have a middle name. Anyone know any Welsh books ?

The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies. Supposed to be very good, though I've not read it yet!

Not sure if I can find a book on that LOL
Can it be something to do in the publishing world, even if books not magazines?

All Sedaris works great and funny too.

Wonder Woman: Love and Murder
by Jodi Picoult, Terry Dodson (Illustrator), Rachel Dodson (Illustrator)

To quote Wikipedia: "Coming of age is a young person's transition from adolescence to adulthood."
These seem to be the best lists resulting from googling "coming of age novels":

Would Mrs. Dalloway work for your task? I've been looking around online and there seems to be some discussion of lesbian themes/inclinations, perhaps not unlike The Color Purple, however I don't think anyone self-identifies as a lesbian. (I might be wrong--I haven't read it!) What say you?
Thanks!

Thanks for putting this challenge together. I'm having so much fun!
For 10.7, The Heroes Task:
One of my "heroes," Bobby Kennedy, wrote The Enemy Within The McClellan Committee's Crusade Against Jimmy Hoffa and Corrupt Labor Unions. It's not an autobiography, per se. It is a first hand account of his experience as Attorney General investigating Hoffa. Would that be acceptable?
Thanks!

A Review:
Ethan Muller is struggling to establish his reputation as a dealer in the cut-throat world of contemporary art when he is alerted to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: in a decaying New York slum, an elderly tenant has disappeared, leaving behind a staggeringly large trove of original drawings and paintings. Nobody can tell Ethan much about the old man, except that he came and went in solitude for nearly forty years, his genius hidden and unacknowledged. Despite the fact that, strictly speaking, the artwork doesn't belong to him, Ethan takes the challenge and makes a name for the old man - and himself. Soon Ethan has to congratulate himself on his own genius: for storytelling and salesmanship. But suddenly the police are interested in talking to him. It seems that the missing artist had a nasty past, and the drawings hanging in the Muller Gallery have begun to look a lot less like art and a lot more like evidence. Sucked into an investigation four decades cold, Ethan will uncover a secret legacy of shame and death, one that will touch horrifyingly close to home - and leave him fearing for his own life.

I know I can read a book that is 4th in the series, but how should I handle the zero? Could I go with first in series for the zero?

Here be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman, if you like historic fiction.

It looks like Cynthia responded what to do if you get 0 in those math tasks - see post #95.

Are we adjusting this challenge to be: Read a book written by a Native American Author OR a book with a Main Character who is Native American?
That would make it easier and I would have more
selections causing me to go back and look at my options again, because as far as I know Stephanie Meyer is not Native American!
