Absolutely. It is really important to remember that you have to finish one book for a task this challenge as a minimum. I don't want people starting 5 massive books and not finishing anything!!

I also want to avoid anyone "hogging" all of the "good" tasks :p Not that we would...but it's easy to get carried away...

Great. I'll wait to see where the cards fall and till I'm into Howl's Moving Castle, but knowing me, I'll be reading two books at the same time. I'll also always try to go after the harder tasks first :)

message 203: by Elspeth (new)

Elspeth | 101 comments I'll read The Vegetarian, which could work for J8, F5, or C9. It's set in South Korea, half of the audiobook is narrated by a woman, and the title is 13 characters.

Should I just pick one of these tasks now or wait to be more strategic?

I love a challenge which do you think will be the hardest to cover I'm up of a bit of research see what i can find that will fit. I like to be prepared living out in the sticks i can't just run to the library.

I love Neil Gaiman. Only discovered him last year after a recommendation from a colleague. Haven't read this one yet, will be interested to know your thoughts!

Definitely a book I would reread. Hope you enjoy it.

Rebecca (rebeccaemma) | 85 comments I will take C9 too American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History American Sniper The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History by Chris Kyle (I've got that as an audiobook from the library - just came off reserved. Can smash it out over the weekend)

...unless someone else had wanted that one? xx

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments I will read for F5 and J8.

Deidre(Dee) ~ Johnny's Grandma ~ wrote: "I will read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman by Neil Gaiman for D6."

I have this too but haven't read it yet. I think I'm one of those rare creatures who's not blown away by Neil Gaiman. I've only read The Ocean at the End of the Lane and thought it was ok. I am still trying to finish American Gods. It's 6 months now. I love Stardust though so I guess that evens it out?

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments I've been going over the rules, it seems we can get higher points if we read for the HIT TASKS.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Ashley, I'm reading for F5 too :)

Ashley | 1439 comments Thanks!

I've used Rebecca's guess of A9. This was a miss and the task is;

A-9 - read a book where the first word of the title is An

Ashley | 1439 comments Hi All...

Land animals in the title (max. 2 per book) for 20 points each : 0 points
Land animals in the book as characters (max. 5 per book) for 10 points each: Azhdeha, Keller and Galen (shapeshifters) = 30 points
Land animals mentioned in the book (max. 5 per book) for 5 points each : mountain lion = 5 points
Land animals on the cover for 10 points (max. 5 per book) : panther = 10 points

Total: 45 points

message 215: by ~~~N~~~ (new)

~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments So, as far as I understand it, we get bonus points for reading extra books (up to eight) for hits. Do we get any bonus points for reading extra books for misses? Sorry if I have this wrong.
message 216: by ~~~N~~~ (new)
~~~N~~~ (chocolate-cannibal-bunnies) | 616 comments Also, for page points, say you read two books that were 150 pages. Would that count as 2 points (1 each) or 3 points (from the total number)?

message 217: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Noa wrote: "So, as far as I understand it, we get bonus points for reading extra books (up to eight) for hits. Do we get any bonus points for reading extra books for misses? Sorry if I have this wrong."

There are no bonus points for misses. Only read two books for a miss to get the task points.

Noa wrote: "Also, for page points, say you read two books that were 150 pages. Would that count as 2 points (1 each) or 3 points (from the total number)?"

Total page count points are awarded per book read. Each person can only read one book per task. If the task was part of a "hit" then they can still only read one book.

I've not read any of Gaiman's other books (though I've seen the movie Stardust many times), but I would suggest The Graveyard Book to someone. It's not a masterpiece or anything and it's definitely a children's book (though entertaining for older readers), but it's also interesting, and I remember I was extremely invested in the end.

Gillian Murrell | 497 comments Which cords sunk a ship and what type of ship was it?

message 221: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments D3 sunk a submarine.

Correct - follows as the game. A sub is one co-ord for 1 point. A battleship is 5 co-ords in a line for 5 points

2 books to gain points
8 bonus reads are allowed for extra points

Miss:
2 books to gain points
No bonus reads

message 239: by Ange (new)

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments American Gods was a bit of a hard slog for me too but in the end I didnt think it was that bad. I gave it a 3, didnt really get all the hype though.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments This is the 2nd time I've tried but I can't get into it. I rarely DNF lol. I don't why but I always try to finish even a book I don't like. I think I've only got 7 books I DNFed. Somewhere along those lines.

message 241: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Haha I'm the same...just keep wasting my life finishing the book I hate! I always think that it might get better...they never do.

I really enjoyed American Gods but I get what you mean. It's not an easy read

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments I feel like I'm 1/4s in and nothing is happening. Of course there's a lot already but I don't like the overall feels and tone of the book. I feel like Gaiman like to write depressing settings is all. Got the same vibes with Ocean at the End of the Lane. In my head I keep picturing it as some kind of noir movie with a rate of 10 on a 1-10 bleakness scale.
