The community college I attended regularly played the Scottsdale Artichokes in different sports. I was impressed that they were brave enough to go with an odd name. Of course, we were the Fighting Gila Monsters :)

Legend has it that the Drama department lost out on some financial funding from the school one year to the Athletics department. And so in retribution the drama department got to pick the name of the athletic team. Payback is hell :-)

I was a drama major in college. Some of us were very...inventive!

Yay, GO ZIPS! Even though my alma mater is up the road at Kent State (GO FLASHES!) I'll support Akron, my brother's alma mater. Big family rivalry :)
You score 1 point for a team when you report that you have read a book with that team's reading requirement. I need to know how your book meets the team's task. At the end of the 15 days, the winning team will play the next team in the roster.

Brindi, all you need to do is report books as you read them, and I'll keep track of how many votes each team gets.

I believe you read books for the 2 teams you pick. The more books you read books with your chosen criteria the higher the score.

Yeah, but Lanelle's Message 2 makes me think that we don't get to pick our teams, Lanelle is the one who selects the teams for the time period and we have to match our reading to what she has selected. I think I'll wait for her to further clarify my questions.

Just asked that question - I thought since 7 teams were listed we were able to choose our own and then read as many books as fit the criteria

JoAnne, I'm afraid you've misunderstood. The teams playing against each other for Sept. 1 - 15 are the Sioux Falls Storm and the Scottsdale Artichokes (see message 2). You have correctly guessed the reading prompts I was going to use for those two teams though :)

Thanks for asking questions, Trea. If my instructions were unclear to you, others may not understand them either.
1 - you can report for either team; you're not locked out
2 - you can read more than one book for a team
What I had imagined happening was that folks would come by and report that a book they read for another challenge (or just because) would work for a certain reading task. Although I don't mind people reading specifically for this game.

You're welcome, Lanelle. I didn't see the answers to my questions specifically mentioned in the how tos, so I figured it would be better to ask than assume anything.

Ok - then next questions.
I can read as many books for the two teams as I want- I don't need to pick one team over the other?
It has to be green covers for the artichokes? I can't say I'd go with veggies in a book instead?
Does it have to be at least 50% of green on the cover?

1 - Yes, read as many books as you want for either team. You do not need to pick one team over the other.
2 - I'm going to stick with a lot of green on the cover for this round. If the Scottsdale Artichokes wins this game, I will most likely change the reading task to vegetables mentioned in the story. Or it could be a wealthy main character because Scottsdale is known for its rich population.
3 - I'd rather not say a certain percentage for 'a lot'. Most folks know when there is plenty of a specific color on the cover.
Like to told Trea, thanks for looking for clarification, JoAnne. It helps everyone figure out how a new challenge works.

This looks like fun. I'm in and I changed my post!
Can't imagine how you and the other mods come up with some great new ideas to keep things fresh
My parents used to winter in Scottsdale. Have lots of fond memories of the area.
Never been to SD - Should it be Sioux?
Since my hometown is in the list - I MUST do this! GO STORM!!!

I'm so glad that everyone is excited about this game.
I think I'll join in as well. I started reading
, but then I realized that it would be a point for the 'Chokes, so I'll plan on finishing it Thursday morning.

I always thought books had to be read entirely during the challenge period.

I run my challenges like that, but each mod is different and can set their own rules for their challenges. I just figured that Lanelle would re-read what she had already started after the 1st to make it "legal" since there's nothing stating that re-reads can't be used.

I understand re-reads being allowed but still thought the entire re-read had to be during the challenge period.
I don't mind when you start your book as long as you don't finish it until after the game begins. (It's kind of the same in the Hangman game. As long as you finish your book after the quote is posted, it doesn't matter when you began it.)

Good to know. Thanks for the clarification!

Great idea for a challenge. Thanks very much.

You're probably right, Kathy. The Artichokes are bound to fumble or something, and the Storm will take possession of the ball :)

This challenge is simple.
