Rashkolnikov is not a carefree murderer. It is possible that had he only killed the wicked pawn-broker he might have felt differently and cashed in the lucre. The accidental murder of Lizaveta makes his actions a crime in his own eyes as well as the eyes of the world. His not spending the loot does not make him less guilty.
