Wastrel | 51 comments Margret wrote: "The Mallorean starting with Guardians of the West"

If you're going for Eddings, it should probably be either The Belgariad or The Elenium; the Mallorean is a sequel to the Belgariad.

Of those two series, the Belgariad is the more famous; the Elenium, though, is much more interesting. Tonally, it tries to unite the fun, easy-going approach of his earlier books with much greater grittiness and darkness and hints of Lovecraft at the edges - it may be rainbows and light compared to some modern grimdark, but it was pretty bold at the time. It also incorporates plot elements less often seen in mediaeval fantasy - papal (not actually called a pope, but similar) electoral politics and sieges play a role.
I'm not going to say it's great, but it's not terrible, and it's interesting.

Margret wrote: "The Mallorean starting with Guardians of the West"

This does seem to be a sequel to the other series---you can change your nomination to that one if you would like!

I know someone was talking about another Eddings series---be advised, it has been our experience that 2 nominations by the same author just split the vote---not advisable!

I will nominate The Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster Bujold. There are 4 books:
1. Beguilement
2. Legacy
3. Passage
4. Horizon
I have read and enjoyed her science fiction series about Miles Vorkosigan but have not read any of her fantasy.

message 31: by Margret (new)

Margret I'm begging everyone who is seconding and nominating to please join in on the discussions with the few of us who already do, it would be awesome if there was more than 2-3 people chatting about the books!

Depends on which one wins. 0:)

message 34: by Bill (new)

Bill I was the only one who commented on the 4th book of Earthsea. So lonely.

message 35: by Kathi, There’s no such thing as too many books! (new)

Kathi | 1272 comments Mod
I always comment if I am reading along with the group, but I don't always chose to read the series that the group is reading. If it's a series I've read in the past, I try to comment but usually don't remember enough to say anything coherent.

message 36: by Margret (new)

Margret I know there's a lot of lurkers too.. just trying to draw people out cause it does get a little lonely!

I'm certainly not the most active lately, but I agree. It helps when others at least know they are listening.
Just a hey, I'm reading too, or I like it helps.

message 38: by Helen (new)

Helen | 1 comments I was in one of our reads with a couple of others and not one of the people who voted it in joined the read! Grrrrrrrrrr

message 39: by Helen (last edited Oct 16, 2016 09:44AM) (new)

Helen | 1 comments Seconded
Bone dolls twin
Elenium
Homeland
Temeraire
Black Prism not qualified
Seven waters
Last storm Lord

Not seconded
Chase the morning
Pillars of reality
Chronicles of Loscari
Goblin trilogy
Beguilement

This is no indication on whether they qualify!

Katy (kathy_h) | 206 comments Bill wrote: "I was the only one who commented on the 4th book of Earthsea. So lonely."

Yep, The Shadows of the Apt has been a lonely read. I'm hoping the next series I read with the group will be more popular.

message 42: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 24 comments It might be interesting to have a series of polls on each nominated book -- would you join in reading -- so that we would get the one the most people would read.

Though that would be a LOT of polls, and also people might say Yes when they meant, maybe.

Bill wrote: "The Lightbringer series isn't complete as Week's extended it to 5 books and the 4 is just about to be released."

This is correct! #4 is being released soon enough, but now there is a #5, so we will have to wait on this one!

This is an interesting idea. It would be more practical to move the polls off Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, where you can set up a checklist and people can check which series they would be interested in participating.

message 49: by Kathi, There’s no such thing as too many books! (new)

Kathi | 1272 comments Mod
Just a comment on voting in a poll vs. participating in a discussion--I sometimes choose to vote in a poll because I may be interested in a series later and want to see what people have to say about it, not because I am ready to read it along with the group. So I am one of those people who may vote for something and then follow but not participate in the discussion. If I nominate or second a series, then I will read along with the group and participate in the discussion if the series I nominate or second wins.
