Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 838 comments I may have missed it, but did we already decide which books will be the group reads for January 2017? If so, which books?

Elizabeth (Alaska) No decision has been made. We usually have a poll. I am unsure there will be a January group read. Louise is our only moderator and she has not been active in the group for a few weeks.

I have contacted GR and hope that something can be done, at least temporarily. Personally, I am excited we have so many new members and look forward to what everyone has to say here.

Elizabeth,
Thanks for following up on this. I hope something can be done as I'm excited to have a group read, too.

message 4: by El (new)

El | 121 comments Just throwing my voice into the mix too. I love group reads, and would love to see what this group could come up with.

Maybe we could set something up on an unofficial basis?

Elizabeth (Alaska) I was thinking for January, perhaps we'd just have a theme or one general area of interest where we could each share books that apply. We'd all get to know each other better and get some great recommendations into the bargain.

Only moderators can create a poll, but if this idea appeals to you until we can get more on our feet, let's throw out some ideas!

I'll add at this point also that only moderators can create group challenges. Of course, we'd like to continue with Louise's great idea for challenges and the hope is, even if late, this will continue.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Here is Louise's schedule of "themes", but she had not gotten to January 2017. Is there one of those not yet used of interest? Something else?

El | 121 comments Hmm, I'm always interested in Gothic/Horror, but since I'm a newer member here, I'd be down with anything (except maybe Romance... ugh...) others prefer.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Here is the GR list of gothic!

/shelf/show/...

And for Horror!

/shelf/show/...

Not that many of you couldn't figure out if there was something in these categories you might want to read, but I can tell you I thought these were not something I'd naturally choose. Yet on the gothic list, I see that I've read 4 of the top 7, and have some others further down on my wish list.

message 9: by Karin (last edited Dec 27, 2016 04:27PM) (new)

Karin What about doing a poll/vote on Survey Monkey? This his how we did it on Shelfari, and indeed one of my crossover groups here still does this.

I am not a fan of anything horror, so if we do that will "abstain, but courteously" to quote from a character in one of my husbands' favourite movies, 1776.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Karin wrote: "I am not a fan of anything horror, so if we do that will "abstain, but courteously"..."

The theme is gothic / horror. I don't read horror either, but I have a few gothic titles I might choose.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I should say the suggestion is gothic/horror. I put up some lists that apply so people could see if they have things that qualify they might not have considered. Please speak up if you like/dislike this idea or have another you like better.

I'd prefer not to go through a whole survey process so close to January 1.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ha! and El, I found a comment I didn't post, should have followed your Post #7

El wrote: "Hmm, I'm always interested in Gothic/Horror, but since I'm a newer member here, I'd be down with anything (except maybe Romance... ugh...) others prefer."

Don't worry about being new. We have over 300 new members since December 8, doubling our previous membership. We've been such a quiet, laid back group - I'm hoping for great things from all of you! ;-)

message 13: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1466 comments I'd love to do a gothic read. I'm also surprised at the amount of books on that list that I have read since I wouldn't normally consider it a genre I would look for. So,I guess I second the idea for a gothic themed read, by a woman of course.

Right, I forgot the theme, plus Gothic includes Jane Eyre, and I could always read that one again if I don't find something else.

message 15: by Rae (new)

Rae Sengele (raesengele) | 14 comments Just wanted to chime in and say that I'd also love to do a gothic read.

message 16: by lethe (new)

lethe | 241 comments I think January is a great month for reading a gothic classic. :-)

message 17: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 838 comments I'm not into horror, either. So I would go for a gothic read.

Could a general theme even be as simple as "This is a writer who could re-write the phone book and I'd be excited to read it"? Or is that maybe a better talking point in the forums?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ninjamechanic wrote: ""This is a writer who could re-write the phone book and I'd be excited to read it"? Or is that maybe a better talking point in the forums? "

Oh, we hope when you read one of her books, you'll tell us exactly that! We do have a thread "favorite authors" too. In the meantime, that might not be quite what we're looking for for January. ;-)

·¡³¾Ã±ô¾±²¹ Miranda so I came from the "welcome" talk and I saw you talked about gothic. I had this class last semester in college that was all about feminist and queer studies. When it came to the final work, I read "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Just saying, it was really good :) Hope I helped

message 21: by Clizia (new)

Clizia Conti | 11 comments I really like gothic and I'd like to deepen the subject. I'd love to read "The Yellow Wallpaper" as well and maybe "Beloved" by Toni Morrison? Greetings

message 22: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 838 comments I like the idea of a gothic read, but I saw in the Introduction thread there was a suggestion that we each choose our own book. Don't you think we need to set up some sort of system to know what each person is reading so we can at least dialog with someone who is reading the same book? Or do we each just set up a thread for the book we are reading?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Tamara wrote: "I like the idea of a gothic read, but I saw in the Introduction thread there was a suggestion that we each choose our own book. Don't you think we need to set up some sort of system to know what ea..."

We don't have a moderator at this point, so we'll just muddle along.

Since we are pretty much agreed on a gothic theme, I'll plan to read Affinity by Sarah Waters.

message 24: by El (new)

El | 121 comments We could have one thread for the theme and everyone shares their thoughts about what they are reading in that one thread. That allows people the interesting dialogue about common motifa in gothic reads, or whatever else.

That's the way I pictured it, El, but if it turns out that several members are reading the same book, they might want to have their own thread.

Anita mentioned in another thread that she and Louise had talked about her becoming a co-moderator. Whenever this gets sorted out, either of those two will be directing the 'action' as it were.

message 26: by lethe (new)

lethe | 241 comments I thought 'group read' meant that we could give suggestions and vote for them, and the book with the most votes would be the group read for that month.

Is this a change of plan? We all choose our own book?

We don't have the ability to have a poll. This is only a 1-month compromise until either Louise surfaces, or GR designates a moderator who can do things.

message 28: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 838 comments Since January is almost upon us, should someone start a thread so we could each list the book we want to read? I hesitate to do it myself since I'm new to the group.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I posted mine in this thread. I'm sorry this doesn't seem a more formal process to some of you, especially as so many have recently joined.

message 30: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 838 comments I intend to read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman since it has been years since I read and/or taught it. It's short, but I figure it's a good one with which to begin they year. If several others are interested in reading the same book, perhaps we can start a separate thread just for that book. Let me know if you're interested and I'd be happy to start the thread.

message 31: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1466 comments No problem, I will totally start a January thread later tonight when I have access to an actual computer in the book discussions thread. I knew we usually do a poll and read the same book, but a many of you started we don't have a way to do a poll and it is pretty much January already. I have a feeling many of us will read the same books and we'll be able to discuss common gothic nuances with each other across our reads. it'll be good and we'll make it work!

message 32: by Talia (new)

Talia | 2 comments I'd be glad to read The Yellow Wallpaper as well. Maybe a group of us can start a thread to discuss it, if anyone else is going to read it?

message 33: by El (new)

El | 121 comments I am thinking I might read Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. However, that's 455 pages which wouldn't normally bother me... except I'm still about halfway through another very large book, and even if I were to finish that by the new year, I'm not sure I could start off with another whopper right away.

Also I'm sick so I feel weak in my reading ability, cough cough.

I may just re-read Frankenstein.

Elizabeth (Alaska) El wrote: "I am thinking I might read Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. However, that's 455 pages which wouldn't normally bother me... except I'm still about halfway through anothe..."

LOL - I penciled it in, as it fits a slot for my challenge group. I have it on my Kindle, so if you decide definitely to read it, speak up, and I'll fit it in. Somehow. I think.

message 35: by Rae (new)

Rae Sengele (raesengele) | 14 comments I've read The Yellow Wallpaper more times than I can count for school, so I think I'm going to pass on reading it. I've been meaning to read Jane Eyre, so I think I'm going to go with that if anyone else is interested.

message 36: by Anita (last edited Dec 29, 2016 04:22PM) (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1466 comments I've started a Gotchic Reads discussion here so let's pick up and continue this conversation over there :)
I purposely placed it there instead of with the specific group reads discussions since we're reading within a theme rather than the same book. Hopefully by February we'll be all sorted out.

message 37: by Karin (new)

Karin I'm planning to reread Jane Eyre at this point, but may look at this further. It's on the first page of Gothic Reads.

message 38: by Louise, Group Founder (last edited Jan 02, 2017 02:05PM) (new)

Louise | 590 comments Hi guys. January read will be what was scheduled as our December read ( The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ), since I didn't get round to putting that thread up before life went crazy on me.

Thanks everyone for helping run this group so well in my untimely absence. And welcome to all new members! Suggestions will definitely be incorporated into the Feb poll

Edit: Just looked through the gothic read thread and am happy to have two january group reads with Gothic reads running alongside The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society this month.
