~World Cup 2014 Reading Challenge~
The cup of life, this is the one
Now is the time, don't ever stop
Push it along, gotta be strong
Push it along, right to the top
(...)
And when you feel the heat the world is at your feet
No one can hold you down if you really want it
Just steal your destiny right from the hands of fate
Reach for the cup of life 'cause your name is on it
Do you really want it... Do you really want it...

Lyrics from Cup Of Life by Ricky Martin - France 98

Duration: You set the pace

Rules:
1. All book formats allowed (ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, paperbacks, etc.).
2. Rereads are fine as long as you read the whole book.
Levels of Play:
Kick-Off = 1 to 5 books
Free Kick = 6 to 10 books
Corner Kick = 11 to 15 books
Golden Goal = 16 to 20 books
Hat Trick = 21+ books

STEP 1: BUILD YOUR TEAM
Choose one of the options below to build your team dream.

Option 1:
How would you make your dream team? Messi from Argentina, Ronaldo from Portugal, Casillas from Spain? Pick eleven Countries participating in the World Cup - or, if you prefer, players from those Countries.

Then read a book for each team/player that are set or were written by authors from that country. Or with Title or Author's name begin with the same letter as the Country/Player.
Example:
1. Messi, Argentina - Midnight Crossroad
2. Brazil - Skin Game by Jim Butcher

Option 2: Cover Colors.
In a soccer/football team there are two things to take in account: the type of player and the formation used.

Choose one of the (from wikipedia) and create your own team, reading the amount of books/cover colors for each type that are specified on the chosen formation.

GOALKEEPER - Grey color
DEFENDER - Blue color
MID-FIELDER - Yellow color
FORWARD - Red color

Option 3: Using book title, series name, author's or main character's first or last name, spell your favorite teams. You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, the, etc.)
Example
I - Discount Armageddon - InCryptid #1
T - Ty Grady from Cut & Run
A - The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
L - Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor
Y - You Slay Me

STEP 2: PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Choose one of the options below and use the read-a-team method to play the championship.

Read-a-Team Method:
For each team/country you can read books that follow one of the rules:
- Cover is the same color from one (or all) of the selected country's flag
- First or Last author's name begins with the same letter as the country
- Author from the selected country
- Action set in the selected country

Option 1: READER'S CHOICE
Choose one or more groups from message #2 . Use the read-a-team method and rate the book read. Team with highest ranking wins. In case of a tie you can either read another book for each tied team or pick the winner. Read another book for the winner team.

Option 2: FOLLOW THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Using the read-a-team method and the World Cup Results, read the winners from each round.

GROUP STAGE: Read the two winners of each group (message #2)
QUARTER FINALS: Read all eight teams participating
SEMI-FINALS: read all four teams participating
FINAL: read the two finalist teams
WORLD CUP WINNER: Read the Winner of the Championship

Note 1: This option has a limitation of start date. The results will be posted on message #3
Note 2: The winner team will be read 5 times

Wasn't planning to. But it's going to be hard to miss it. All major squares have giant TV screens, all bars have TVs outside (and there is one in my building right under my windows) and my brother is in the next room. We are already banned from living room when games are on. :P

I'll be still at work during the Germany - Portugal and the USA - Portugal will be at 11 PM on a sunday... NOT FAIR!!!!

The teams are vicious? You should see the fans. The only thing I know is that if Argentina wins the world cup hosted by Brazil, there will be blood on the streets.

Even "friendly" games between the two never end without at least 2 or 3 being expelled - sometimes even the trainers are.

I didn't see that here (but wasn't really looking. Usually there is book in hand :P). But all the buses, trams and most of the cars have little flags and stickers on them. Those red&white squares are hard to miss. :P
I need to get myself a T-shirt for tomorrow. Don't want to stand out.

My son and I went out and bought shirts a couple days ago. We didn't bother with USA shirts. He bought Germany and I got Argentina. We already have the DVR set for games we won't be home for. Been looking forward to this for months!

Question for Sonia: Does step 1 have to be complete before starting on step 2?

No. The order doesn't matter. However if you are choosing the option "follow the championship" you have a few weeks before knowing which teams to read.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I'm so used to the Brazilian accent that I almost forget how many Brazilians we have around here. Today they are easy to spot, just look for the yellow and green :-)

Let the games begin!

❢İձπ²ΉβΆΔ (ttea) | 9616 comments Partying is already starting here. :P
Everywhere you look it's red & white. Interesting, no green & yellow. :P

When is our kick-off? I've finished book yesterday I could use here :D (those Os are kinda hard to find)

message 31: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Mine? Monday. Against Germany *shudders*

If you enjoy partying, today is the perfect night

1) look for the yellow & green people, they have meat, samba, beer and football

Or

2) go to saint Antonio festivities. They have parades, sardines, caldo Verde and beer or wine

❢İձπ²ΉβΆΔ (ttea) | 9616 comments I don't think I'll find green & yellow today here. They are in hiding. :D

So, since we (Croatia) are starting today, I can start challenge today? Or when?

message 33: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Yes, you can start it whenever you want :-)

What? You have to speak little louder! I have perfect surround system. Brother in next room, neighbors on the other side, and few TVs coming in from outside :D

There were also firecrackers, little firework and those torch thinigies. I'm still trying to get the smoke out of the room :P

Ahahaha

I'm still cheering for Croatia - specially to avoid the noise of the green and yellow neighbors - but the Brazilian goal was good. Almost as good as the Croatian defense a few minutes before

I haven't seen it. TV is on, sound is muted (I'm listening to Dresden :P) and I was working on something on comp

Hey, that just wasn't fair! It's obvious judges are for Brazil. :P (I've seen that goal)
