Yep, I got to the point of thinking there was a lot of 'dirty gray' to most of the characters - but then, isn't that true in life generally?

Vicki Willis I am at 60% now.

Vicki Willis I finished it and thought the ending was perfect. The last 25% of the book was so fast paced I couldn't put it down. Loved this book!

I have another question, Hunter...
Not just about this book, but in general...
How do you decide which characters live or die?

message 108: by Troy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Troy (robotroym) Little late to join in... Just started tonight. Only 15% in, but I can already tell I'm going to like this book. Interesting, believable characters. Creepy setting. Can't wait to dig in further.

D20 | 173 comments Like Vicki I couldn't stop in the last chapters.

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) I loved Hunter's characterization in this one--a much more "character driven" novel than some of this other titles.

Thank you, Vicki. I wrote the last third of the book at a feverish pace! Glad it came through. You know, every time I map out who lives and who dies, I get to the actual writing and my plans never come out the way I thought they would. I swear to you, the story and the characters themselves decides who bites the bullet. Most of the people who die in this book were supposed to live. I'm always shocked by the way things turn out, which is why writing is still magical to me.

I loved being able to dive deeper into the characters in this one. I have plans for more books like this in the future, once I fulfill all of my monster story obligations. :)

Haha! Nothing like getting wrapped up in your own story! I'll have to read some more of yours. Got any that get more into supernatural activity? Or others besides Jersey Devil that draw from local legends?

message 118: by David (new) - rated it 4 stars

David Brian (davidbrian) Sorry, Hunter, I finished days ago but then got hit with a surprise weekend at the coast.
What could I do, beer on the sand or write a review? Exactly!

Review to come within the next 24 hours! ;)

I have a supernatural series that is out of print but coming back this summer (Forest of Shadows, Sinister Entity and island of the Forbidden).

I tackled The Montauk Monster for Pinnacle before the Jersey Devil. I also had a set of twins battle the Loch Ness Monster in Loch Ness Revenge. :)

You think you don't like Grandpa Abraham now... :)

message 124: by Troy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Troy (robotroym) Just finished. Review coming soon. 5/5 stars! As early as around the 50% mark, I could not put this book down. Never has a book made my jaw drop so many times with surprise and shock. I'm still trying to catch my breath after turning the last page.

message 125: by Jennifer (last edited Jun 28, 2017 12:39AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jennifer | 52 comments I was starting to warm to Grandpa Abraham a little. I feel so bad about it now!!

I'm finished, I flew through the last 25% or so. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will write my review once I've fully absorbed what has happened.

The characters were fantastic. So many books have flat one-dimensional characters, but the main characters at the very least were really well written. Like I said above I instantly disliked Grandpa Abraham, but then warmed to him. All of them I could see as real people.

I'm not a huge fan of haunted house stories, my mind wanders quickly so it takes something special to keep my attention. And this was definitely one of those. It's not often that I'm vocal when I read a book but at times I said/shouted "NO!" out loud (view spoiler).

This is the first book I've read of yours Hunter, but it's definitely not going to be the last!

I have paperbacks of all, how about a "free bookcase" to those that buy the next book in the saga??? ;)

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 44 comments HUNTER-- I just want you to know that because of this group read, I have the 'discovered a new author I like' feeling. I am still reading your book, The Jersey Devil , started Tortures of the Damned and am holding off on We Are Always Watching for now, because based on the intro, it seems....deeper...or at least, more character driven, perhaps, and I KNOW that I will want actual TIME before I start that one, so that I can read it properly, if you know what I mean... So-THANK YOU-because I now have *so* many great reads ahead of me with your books!

So, sir, you are 'in my library' and I look forward to discussing your writing with you for a while yet! You are officially stuck with me. *Muahahaha* *Evil geeky laugh* --Jen from Quebec :0)
