CiJ - ROUND 1:

12 Days Tasks of Christmas... in July

At first, I thought we do Christmas in July because it's summer in Dec in Australia. Whilst this is true, it seems people in the other side of the world also celebrate Christmas in July though it appears the original intent was retail related (clearing the shelf)

Read 1 book to complete each task (except for task #8) so you will need to have read at least 12 books to complete this round

1. Read a book you were gifted / bought in December 2016 / January 2017. Alternatively, read a book you added to your tbr list in those 2 months.

2. Read a book set (100%) in the other hemisphere of the world to where you live.
For this task, we will only look at vs

3. Read a book set in season different to the season you are currently experiencing.

4. Read a book where character works in retail. Hint: bookshops

5. Sales! Read a book you got for free (can be a gift or a review copy) OR bought at significantly reduced price.

6. Read a book that "cleared the shelves": was on the OR list for the first half of 2017.

7. Read a book with at least 1 million ratings.

8. 12 Days of Christmas... Read 12 short stories*. This task may require more than 1 book.

*any story with less than 100 page counts for this task. Hint: you could finally fit all those .5 of a series in a challenge!

Note: if you are reading an anthology, please list the stories' titles (just 12 - to show that you've met the requirement to complete this task)

9. Read a book you think would make a good gift for a loved one.

10. Read book where title (excluding subtitle/series name) OR author's name (first, middle, last) that has a total of 12 letters

11. Read a book which cover shows something upside down (can be a person or even title printed upside down). Example: A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, #1) by Claudia Gray One Would Think the Deep by Claire Zorn etc

12. Read the latest book you've brought home from the shops or the library or the latest bookmail delivered or the latest ebook you've downloaded on your ereader or the latest audiobook you've downloaded. Please note this Must be the LATEST at the time reading/listening starts

For #6, how do you find books listed in prior weeks? I tried scrolling back and got kicked off the site with a message that my free use was gone.

For #11, would a reflection in water work? I am thinking of Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman (Lady Montfort Mystery, #1) by Tessa Arlen .

You need 12 short stories in total. It looks like your book has got 10 short stories in it. So yes, you only need 2 more.

Oh, no! I have a problem with task # 1.

I've been very scrupulous recently about only adding books to be "To-Read" shelf if I'm sure I want to read them. I didn't add any books between 11/13/2016 and 2/6/2017. And I really don't buy books any more, unless they're not available at the library.

I do have 4 books added to my "considering" shelf during the required time period. Should I use one of those?

Very bizzare. In my search for a book with more than a million ratings that I'd like to read, I went to this page:
/shelf/show/...

I discovered two possibilities there,

Looking for Alaska
by John Green (ŷ Author) (shelved 9704 times as young-adult)
avg rating 4.10 1,235,615 ratings published 2005

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1)
by Ransom Riggs (shelved 7545 times as young-adult)
avg rating 3.88 1,161,771 ratings published 2011

But for each of those books, when I follow the link to the book's page, the number of ratings is lower, way less than a million. So I'm not sure if they would count.

I don't have to resort to choosing a Harry Potter book, but I'm having trouble finding books I haven't read that are eligible for this.

Ideas?

Susan, have you already sorted your tbr shelf by number of ratings? You can add num of ratings by going to your tbr shelf, click on settings and click the box of num ratings. Now you can sort your tbr based on the number of ratings. Maybe that way you can find one with 1 million ratings.

If there isn't one on the list, you could try this shelf:
/list/show/3...

These are some books with a million ratings I found on either my tbr or read shelf. Maybe you can find something you like there:
The Notebook (The Notebook, #1) by Nicholas Sparks The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger The Giver by Lois Lowry The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho The Help by Kathryn Stockett The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer The Fault in Our Stars by John Green The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Angels & Demons (Robert Langdon, #1) by Dan Brown City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

12 Days Tasks of Christmas... in July (round 1)

1/12 Finished

At first, I thought we do Christmas in July because it's summer in Dec in Australia. Whilst this is true, it seems people in the other side of the world also celebrate Christmas in July though it appears the original intent was retail related (clearing the shelf)

Read 1 book to complete each task (except for task #8) so you will need to have read at least 12 books to complete this round

1. Read a book you were gifted / bought in December 2016 / January 2017. Alternatively, read a book you added to your tbr list in those 2 months.

2. Read a book set (100%) in the other hemisphere of the world to where you live.

Ah, how smart that would've been! I didn't think to sort I just looked through the entire list, looking at the rating for each book. But I don't have a single book on my TBR or "considering" shelves that has more than a million. Several I've already read (including most of the ones you found), but none waiting.

That listopia you found will be perfect for browsing. I was looking for one, but didn't find it. Thanks.
