One of the best parts of looking for a new book is perusing through all those beautiful covers. Although graphics and images add excitement to the design, there's nothing wrong with a nice and simple text only cover.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments EitherWhite Teeth ( another one sitting on my shelf forever), or Exit West, which I was really looking forward to reading this year. Depends on my mood.

White Teeth by Zadie Smith Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

message 3: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Great choices Tracy. Zadie Smith is one of the authors I want to read for the first time in 2018 so I might read White Teeth too. I added Exit West to my TBR when it was shortlisted doe the Booker Prize so that’s also a possibility for me for this week.

I had been thinking about
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
for this week too.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Ready Player One is a great choice Bryony!

I weirdly have lots of feminism books as options for this one:
This Is Not Chick Lit Original Stories by America's Best Women Writers by Elizabeth Merrick Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I & Garcia by Saurav Chakraborty Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie George by Alex Gino

message 5: by Shelly (new)

Shelly | 67 comments I am choosing among Dark Matter by Blake Crouch , Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson , or Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy . They are all so different from one another, so I am thinking I'll see how I feel next June.

Covey Big Magic Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert Exit West by Mohsin Hamid The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy The Princess Saves Herself in this One (Women are Some Kind of Magic, #1) by Amanda Lovelace Dick Cheney Shot Me in the Face by Timothy O'Leary The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe You Are a Badass How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit

It really just depends on how strict you want to be with your challenge. I suppose glass would be considered an object but since the text is really the primary thing and the focal point then I don't think most would take issue with you counting it.

Thanks I looked through the suggestion list and there were some that were similar so I'm going to allow it for myself :)

message 17: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 19 comments I decided to choose The Christmas Box Collection: The Christmas Box / Timepiece / The Letter by Richard Paul Evans.

Several years ago, I received a beautiful handmade Christmas box from my grandpa with a copy of this book inside. Ever since, I have read the series each Christmas season and it's one of my favorite Christmas traditions! I didn't have time to finish the third book of the series, "The Letter," so this is the first book I'm working on as part of this challenge! I can't wait to finish it tonight!

Jovana (jfreads) I just read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates for this challenge: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I LOVED it. I'm a stickler with 5 stars but it earned it.

My list of challenge books is here.

message 21: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I am reading the categories out of order so I have already completed this one. I used The Wanderers by Meg Howrey. The cover is about 98% text, which was close enough for me.

The Wanderers by Meg Howrey

message 22: by Penny (new)

Penny | 2 comments Would this one count?
Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children, #3) by Seanan McGuire

Perri | 886 comments Finished: Tough read
Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist and Other Essays by Paul Kingsnorth

message 25: by Elise (new)

Elise (theblackhorizon) I wouldn't use that one, Penny, as it has waves, clouds, sky, an interdimensional doorway...

I've found a few options for myself:
Molloy by Samuel Beckett
Extinction by Thomas Bernhard
The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vásquez

Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race - This was Emma Watson's pick for OSS book club for January-February. The cover's all text so it works out.

Serendipity | 441 comments Exit West . Even though it could be classified as magical realism which isn't really my thing the realism was strong enough to offset the magical aspect for me.

message 35: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I'm reading Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay .

message 36: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments I had my local librarian on the look out for a good book for me. She came up with three choices. The library has a new collection of Agatha Christies and The A.B.C. Murders: A Hercule Poirot Mystery just has words. Yay, sounds like fun.

message 37: by Lucy (new)

message 39: by Evelyn (new)

I choose this book because the movie is coming out in August.

Ended up going with Exit West for this prompt.

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

It was ok.. overhyped, I think.

Lucy wrote: "Does anyone know if Small Great Things would work for this?"

I would count it since the stripes aren't really images or an identifiable material

message 42: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 1949 comments I'm part of the Exit West by Mohsin Hamid gang

It was interesting but not sure it was worth the love its been getting

I find it interesting in this age of ebooks I never know what a cover looks like! I picked up a book at t a bookstore a few weeks ago thinking "this looks good." It was- I read it last year.

message 43: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I ended up reading The Princess Saves Herself in this One (Women are Some Kind of Magic, #1) by Amanda Lovelace it was a quick read and had a lot of good poems.

message 44: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3238 comments Anyone else feeling irrationally picky about what exactly qualifies as text only? I actually picked Big Fat Manifesto at first, but my copy arrived from the library with this cover instead: Big Fat Manifesto by Susan Vaught

So it didn't quite seem appropriate anymore. I have quite a few other options on my list, but as I'm looking, I find myself really picky about what really "counts". For example, would something like Flat-Out Celeste (Flat-Out Love, #2) by Jessica Park count? It's technically just words, but each letter has a design.

message 45: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I personally wouldn't count it since some of the designs are actual images, especially the owl.

I would count Big Fat Manifesto, because it does have an edition with words only.

For me, the graphic map lines are more clearly the focus rather than just having the words, but as always, this is a very subjective prompt.
