Catherine | 1561 comments Hi, has anyone here ever been to a book signing at a Costco? I'm going to one in Chicago and I'm just wondering what to expect. Any advice would be appreciated!

Blagica | 12867 comments Not I all advice I can give is have fun. What book is it?

message 55: by Kristina (new)

Kristina 1) How do you track your reading?

Primarily I use the ŷ tracker and a personal spreadsheet, which I use to track challenge reads and books read each month. I also have a Member Corner. I've also started keeping a journal this year for personal reviews (I don't like writing public reviews).

2) What types of stats do you track?

The only book stats I keep track of outside of ŷ are title and number of pages (which I find is easier to plan for each month compared to number of books). Dates read, publication year, author, and rating I reference in ŷ.

3) How do you retain what you read? Or, do you read for the moment and not worry about remembering what you read?

I generally read for the moment. But this year I started keeping a journal to help me remember my thoughts and feelings about the books I've been reading. I think it will also be a good reference in the future for me to get a gist of what a book was about.

4) What other bookish goals do you have?

My primary goal is to get through all of the books I currently own on my bookshelves and Kindle (about 175 total, so it will take a couple years). Every other challenge I do (Popsugar, A-Z, etc.) is a means to help me prioritize what I read next within my personal collection (though I still read outside books sometimes). My other goal this year is to write a review in my reading journal for every book I read. Because I always read for the moment it's a nice way to engage a little more in the books I read (especially the ones not for a book club or buddy read).

Jessica | 84 comments 1) How do you track your reading?

I Primarily use goodreads to track my reading. I don't do an insane amount of reading so it isn't too hard.

2) What types of stats do you track?

I really just keep track of the number of books I read...but I do like to make sure I'm reading a variety of genres within fiction so I sort of keep track of that stat (in my head).

3) How do you retain what you read?

I read for the moment. I don't have the greatest memory so unless I've re-read a book about 3-5 times it is like reading it new. There are too many books out there unread by me so I don't usually re-read books. However, I have started writing reviews on books I've read but that is less about retaining what I read and more about working on my writing skills.

4) What other bookish goals do you have?

My goals are to just keep on reading when I have time and keep on enjoying reading! Also have my fingers crossed that our little one will pick up on reading. He is very young still but I do hope he picks up on it!

Emily Bates Hi! My name isn’t Emily and I’m trying to start up a reading group website called Monthly Reader where we read one book a month and there’s will be discussions and questions about it. I’m still working out the kinks on how to get the website to work, but I can’t really do it on my own. Please stop by at and give me some feedback and join the group! Thank you so much!

message 68: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Emily - I hope you will see this. Many of the book groups from current reads offer monthly reads. This one does and we have great fun here.

Sarah Long | 40 comments Hey everyone! Can anyone tell me what era "Red Queen" is set in? Naturally I started reading it thinking mid evil (typical of me)...but one part mentioned a screen in the arena. Am I missing something?

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Probably not a TV screen. Maybe a privacy screen of some kind?

message 81: by Mel (new)

Mel (mellie-b) From my understanding - it is an era of its own. It is high fantasy, but there are screens and cameras.

I read a review that said it was like a mix of a gritty dystopic world and a high fantasy novel.

Hope that makes sense?

I would help more, but I don't want to read it. Haha

Ilona | 4698 comments Hi everyone,

I was cycling to work today and was momentarily confused that it was so busy everywhere, and then I realized that the new academic year started today! It is already September! I hope that you all had a wonderful summer. :)
Did you travel? Where you able to you read some great books?

I am just back from a vacation with friends in the Ardennes (Belgium). The weather was good and we had a great time :) I didn't get a lot of reading done during the trip, but my favourites this summer are The Night Circus and The Knife of Never Letting Go

message 84: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments Hello!

Yes vacation is period is over for many... Ardennes sounds like a beautiful place I look at the pictures in Google and looks magical

I will go for vacations next week we will drive in the south of Italy for two weeks. I do not expect much reading during that time, but last month I broke my reading record. 8 Books, for many is easy to accomplish but no for me so I feel quit proud about it.

8 books is great, congratulations Caro! I hope you have a nice vacation! :) I have never been to Italy myself, but it is very high on my list.

oshizu | 5762 comments Hi!

I'd like some tips on how to avoid over-committing to all the wonderful yearly, quarterly, and monthly challenges this group offers.
Since I'm so new, I tend to want to throw myself into every new challenge, LOL. But I've been noticing that the mods and veteran members tend to pledge only a few books for each challenge.

Is the key to under-pledge at first?

Hahaha, you're just enthusiastic and I think that is great.
I don't thinks there's just one solution since we are all different. I guess the key is just trial and error, just try things out (under-pledging, going all for it, participating in as many challenges as you can, participating in just a few etc) and just see what feels good to you. I am still trying things out, and it's still a bit overwhelming at times (especially since I'm joining in different group/buddy reads and challenges from different groups). So next year I'm only going for the Let's Turn Pages as a yearly challenge and some of the short term (monthly or quarterly at the most) challenges and see how that goes. While I enjoy the challenges (and they were a real help to me 2 years ago to get me out of my reading slump) I feel like it takes up too much time to track them all, time I'd rather be spending on reading.
But since we're all different and enjoy different things, this will be different for everybody as well. So, just try it out and see where you're preferences lie :)

message 90: by Mie (new)

Mie | 2153 comments This year my goal was to participate in a lot of challenges, both short- and long terms, even if it was just for a few prompts per challenge.

But I found, that I don’t always feel like reading the planned book just now, so short term challenges will not be my main focus next year. And, after 2 years in this group, I now know which yearly challenges I prefer.

So next year will be different from this year for me - as this year was different from last year. As Susy said: it’s all up to what suits you.

And for that, I love this group 😄

message 91: by oshizu (new)

oshizu | 5762 comments @Susy and @Mie

Thank you both for sharing your experience with the various challenges this group offers.
I agree, Susy, that tracking takes a lot of time away from reading. I'm planning to do all my tracking in a single thread next year. I like your idea of trying different approaches to challenges.
Still, I want time to read the non-challenge books that interest me (or squeeze them into challenge prompts. See there I go again).

Mie, wouldn't it be great if there were a monthly challenge with only a single task? Read a book that's 700 pages or longer.
It's hard to resist a challenge, though, haha! And I do love the variety of challenges that this group offers!
<3

message 92: by Caro (new)

Caro (karopi) | 995 comments So the post and promises for next year are coming now.
Does any of you have a special goal?

In my case for next year I will make a deal with myself that before buying a new book I need to read at least 5 physical books before. The only exceptions will be for my birthday, (moving to the next floor, I deserve books) for the women's prize for fiction and for the Man Booker. I always select a few of them.

What about you guys?

I want to go for a mix of challenges and reading books from my TBR. Doing a part of the Popsugar challenge should be fun. I also like the suggested monthly and quartlerly challenges in this group a lot.
I'd like to read books I already own as well as having the possibility to explore new things.

message 94: by Alisia (new)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I'm just dropping by to say I have missed the heck out of this group! One of my 2019 resolutions is more self care, and that includes participating in this group more. I enjoy it so much! I joined in 2014 but have been pretty inactive for over a year, aside from logging my personal challenge on the ŷ homepage. I've already signed up for some challenges and hope life doesn't get too much in the way of my reading pleasures this upcoming year! :)

I love this time of year too - although dare I say I have had enough of the shopping? I have spent the morning wrapping presents, writing cards and tonight, if it stops raining, we are going to go for a walk around our neighborhood to look at all the lights.

Ilona, I lived in the Netherlands when I was a child, and I remember putting out my shoes for Sinterklass. I loved that tradition, it was so fun. But what I remember even more was how special New Year's was. At least in our town. Everyone would come out of their houses at midnight and set off fireworks for an hour. It was beautiful. The whole season was just magical.

message 100: by Alisia (new)

Alisia (meniali) | 248 comments I'm thinking I want to try something new... I think that I want to add all of my challenge books to my currently reading list and then just alter the "started reading" and "finished reading" dates whenever I decide to start it. I feel like it would give me motivation to "clear the board" so to speak and accomplish my challenges faster. What do you think? Are any of you "OCD" about your ŷ lists?
