It's almost time for the kick-off of our third read-a-thon of 2018 and what's more important in a team challenge than some good strategizing? So you have a bit of a head start to start looking at your TBR and to choose which books you want to tackle in the next week (plus a few days).

This read-a-thon's team challenge is a bit of a combination between BINGO and the ever-popular Guess that Cover game. Your team will work together to complete the various challenge tasks, listed below. As you check off a square, it will be removed to reveal a portion of a popular book cover. The object of the game is to reveal all the covers and then guess the link between the covers. Technically, a book cover is complete once you are able to guess the book that the cover belongs to. But it's a little extra challenge to reveal the entire board.

Note: Tasks with a 🍁can be overlapped with the other tasks

READING TASKS
1. Read 500 pages total (max 100 pages per team member)🍁
2. Every team member recommends a book
3. Complete 10 books total (max 2 per team member)🍁
4. Read a book with an orange cover
5. Read a book with the letters R-E-A-D in the title
6. Read 1,000 pages total (max 200 pages per team member)🍁

7. Read a book by an author who was born in 1950 or earlier
8. Read a book first published in August or September (of any year)
9. Read 2,500 pages total (max 500 pages per team member)🍁
10. Read a book by an author who has published at least 10 books
11. Every team member reads a poem and tells the team what they read
12. Read a book that is part of a series
13. Read a children’s or young adult book

14. Listen to 10 hours of audiobook (max 2 hours per team member)🍁
15. Listen to 25 hours of audiobook (max 5 hours per team member)🍁
16. Read a short story
17. Complete every readathon game
18. Read a thriller or mystery

19. Read a fantasy or sci-fi book
20. Read a non-fiction book
21. Read a book with a female main character
22. Read 3 books that count for the AtY challenge (max 1 per member)🍁
23. Read a book originally published in a language other than English
24. Complete 20 books total (max 5 per team member)🍁

The board game will be in this format, with 6 total covers, each composed of 4 "task" squares.

Yay! I am SO EXCITED to spend all weekend reading!! August has been my lowest in number of books and page count all year, so I'm hoping to fix that this weekend!

First question! For the read 3 books that meet the ATY challenge, can they be three books read by three different members? Or do you mean one member reading 3 books for the ATY challenge?

Just wanted to clarify since there wasn't a limit per member next to that one.

message 6: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
We’ll say one per member since many people said they are reading for the challenge.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1264 comments I'd love clarification: I get that non - leaf tasks cannot overlap with each other, but can leaf tasks only overlap with each other or can they overlap with a non - leaf task?

message 8: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments The leaf task can be overlapped with non-leaf tasks.

Just to clarify, any book that has at least 100 pages left can be used for a prompt? Is that what I had read earlier?

And also, for the Complete every Read-A-Thon game, is that just one person completing all of them? Or at least one person from the team participating in every one of them?

message 11: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Emily, that is correct. Books started before the readathon with at least 100 pages left can be counted toward the game.

For the complete every game, at least one person from the team must participate in each game. All team members do not need to complete all games.

Also, I made this spreadsheet for Team 4, but if any of the other teams want to use it and adapt it for their own teams, they can make a copy of it. Just thought I'd help out!

message 14: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Thanks Emily. I may have already went to the team you were on to scope out your mad spreadsheet skills... Now I don't have to feel like I'm plagiarizing.

Christine Marshall | 33 comments I'm half reading and half listening to Lord of the Flies so I can cover number 7 being born before 1950. and either audio challenge we need!

Question about the games. There were quite a few things posted this morning. Which ones count towards Complete Every Read-A-Thon Game?

I know the Kick-Off will, but what about Bingo, Progress Post, Miles of Pages, and Completed Books?

Just want to make sure we are correctly earning that spot!

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Good question. Kick off is the "game" for today. The individual bingo is separate from the daily games. And the other 3 posts are just for tracking the read-a-thon, so they don't count as games.

Katie, that's what I was thinking. Thanks for clarifying!

message 22: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments So. After seeing the group tasks, I kind of want to participate in the team challenge. Is it possible to jump in? I may not get tons of reading done since it's a busy week, but I can definitely contribute, and the tasks seem doable as a group.

For those of you having trouble with the sharing of the spreadsheet, you can change the editing settings by clicking the Share button at the top.

Share --> Advanced Settings (maybe.. this may be different for y'all) --> Where it says Anyone with Link Can View, switch that to Anyone with Link Can Edit.

I have my team's set so that I'm the only one editing it, just to keep it from getting messy, but if you want to open up the sharing settings, you can do it that way.

Laura, for clarification. For a book that is being counted for audio hours, can we also count the pages covered?

message 27: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Edie, books can be counted for either audio hours or pages, not both. If you've filled your audio requirement, you can convert the rest of the audiobook to pages read & use it for pages.

Don't forget to add all of these ATY reads to the community spreadsheet! 😊

message 29: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments More Questions.....

So the end game is to guess all of the covers and the theme whether or not we've completed all of the tasks? Once we've guessed those correctly we can move onto the next board?

I think that we completed our guesses and theme for board 1 ( team 3), so I'm wondering if I should then move the book Im currently reading over to the non fiction prompt for board 2, or does it have to remain under a book published in September for board 1 once its committed?

once we guess our boards correctly do we really just need to focus on the new board and then any new tasks , and adding to page and audio counts?

last one: 2 ATY books max per person for board 2, does that include ATY books read for board 1?

message 30: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (last edited Aug 29, 2018 09:02AM) (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
You can move around books as much as you want. If you'd rather apply it to the task on board 2 then I don't see any issue with that.

I would say that the objective is to guess all covers and the theme between the books. We'll just say that it's bonus to get all the squares uncovered :)

You can also move onto board 2 whenever you want. It's really just added tasks, not really step 2 per se. We just realized, as mods, that people were moving quickly through the challenge so we added more. You can feel free to work on both simultaneously.

All the the book limits, page counts, audio hours, etc. are cumulative. So you can simply start tallying on top of your current, board 1, totals. Which means the 2 book limit is per person for the length of the read-a-thon.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Another question for the mods:

Theres an 8 book/participant max towards the 40 books task, but if we read past 8 books can those extra books still count for other tasks?

Example if I read a 9th book can we count it towards the non- fiction or romance prompt?? Or do extra books just then go towards the team page count?

message 33: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments You can count your ninth book toward one of the other tasks.
