Frequently Asked Questions:
How Does READING 1001 work?
Every month we vote for the books that we will read as a group two months out. So if we vote in January, we would be voting for March books. Voting occurs around mid month (the 15th) and goes about 1 week.
Two books are chosen; one by popular vote and the other by randomizer. We go through the 1001 list every two years and divide the books by authors last names. Usually there is between 40 and 50 books that we vote on.
A host will lead a discussion of one of the books so we can discuss the book together. You are invited to host a book. If you have read both the popular vote and the randomizer choice, you can start a buddy read. You must have read both choices and get at least one other member to join you in your buddy read. You and the partners must read, discuss, and review the book. The points are the same as if it were a BOTM.
We also have quarterly reads which are bigger books but not the biggest books. We read those together over three months. The quarterly reads are selected around November of every year by voting.
We have one annual read. That book is selected from a list of the biggest books and we are working are way through the list from biggest on down.
We also have various other opportunities. This year we have a continued the TBR takedown (3rd Year). It is quite popular challenge so check it out. It's not too late to join in no matter what time of the year. You pick out a list of books you want to read and each month a number is generated. If you join later in the year. Just leave those numbers already drawn blank.
There are other special challenges. This year, each month will have a special challenge according to admin Diane Z.

How do I participate here at READING 1001?
Take a look around and familiarize yourself but mostly you'll want to generate participation points.
See this link: /topic/show/...
Book keeps a spreadsheet with participation points and you use those to vote. You only need to keep tract of your points. No subtracting necessary. Book takes care of that. We like you to just keep tract of the total points you earn.

How to use the group bookshelf?
We only want 1001 list books on our bookshelf. They are all there, so do not add any books to the shelf
You can find things like past BOTM books and years that they were read.

How do I file a review of a 1001 book?
There is a folder for all the reviews here: /topic/group...
If you click on topics showing found in the left hand side of page, it will alphabetize the books and then you can sort through to find other reviews of your book that you are reviewing. Place your review in that thread. It's fun to compare how we experience the books.
Here is a link to an alphabetized list of already reviewed books with links. If a book has already been reviewed, please add yours. Do not start a new topic. You can go to the right hand side and search the discussions for the title of the book. After you get that, then select Topic only and that should get you to the right thread. Thanks. (/topic/show/...
If there are two or more topics to a book, I will be only using the oldest topic thread. I am requesting that you cut and paste your reviews in the original thread so they are all together. After cutting and paste please delete the additional thread. Thanks.

See Message # 7, as Liz says, just don't leave spaces.

What if I join the group later than January? Can I catch up with the annual and quarterly reads?
Newbies joining after the start of the year are welcome to catchup on Annual, Quarterly and BOTM reads. (Only Newbies). The only thing you can not catch up on is the TBR takedown challenge and the DiversityGlobe Trotter reads.

Ehab, great question. I can think of African American feminist authors but none from England. Maybe Book might know as she is from the UK. Good luck on your thesis.

Thank you. I already choose The Bluest Eye by American female Toni Morrison, so I'm searching about British black female author.

Zadie Smith? Would she fit?
Or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, she is from Africa but may be living in England, so would she count. Guess not, she lives in between US and Nigeria.

I tried to respond to message 23 and it would not take, just sat and spun. I am guessing there is a glitch.
I have noticed that the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ site and its app have started recently to behave in the same way as the last few months of Shelfari's life back then. History repeating?

Well, I'm probably the last person who should answer this because I am not a completist when it comes to the list. There are books on the list I have absolutely zero intention of reading - de Sade books jump to mind, and The Last of the Mohicans is another.
I think it is up to each reader to decide how they want to approach the list. If you would like to be more of a completist, but Cooper makes you want to poke an eye out, why not read an abridged edition. You'll get the gist and perhaps see why it is included on the list.
The full list currently stands at 1315 books in total.
I don't think we are too fussy about abridged versions I know when we did The Count of Monte Cristo some readers completely missed out on the lesbians and other scenes because they read an abridged version and that was fine.
I also know some readers just cannot read some books De Sade being a being DNF and that is OK as well.
This is about you challenging yourself so you make the rules :)

Sometimes things get lost. When a page gets too many characters, things get dropped and I have to readjust and I failed to see that this one got lost. It is there again. Here is the link; /topic/show/...

Hi Zeejane, the whole trilogy is on the list. I remember this was a discussion when we read it as a quarterly read a while back.

Because I've noticed there are only 51 book left on it currently (there will be less if updated next year for sure), but far more books than that that don't have an indexed review.

The wish list were books that had not been read and reviewed prior to coming from Shelfari to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and the list is certainly smaller. Unfortunately, reviews over in Shelfari did not make it to GR. Also I don't think that Book has kept up on taking books off the wishlist so it certainly is decreasing in meaningfulness. Perhaps Book will add to this topic.

We are now down to 22 books on the Wishlist I generally only remove them if they become a group read or if someone reads them as part of their randomised list. I don't have time to check every indexed review to cross reference so if you notice any still on there that shouldn't be let me know :)
Criteria was books that didn't have a review as Kristel says this is a legacy from Shelfari so some won't have reviews here again I don't have time to cross reference but if anyone notices any that should be on the list based on reviews from this group only I am happy to add them back in :)

I might see if I have time to do that and make an updated list for goodreads if yall are cool with that. Because I'm now encountering the problem of getting WLs I haven't read on randomiser as well and it would be nice to have a few more options.

I did just add a sheet to the list spreadsheet with the non-indexed reviews, current WLs with reviews, and reviewed books that have just been missed in the index for mods to review.
OMG looks like my updates have not been going to the shared file will make the suggested updates and investigate what is going on thanks Amanda

Does anybody know something about this edition? I do remember somebody was mentioning German or Scandinavian edition being slightly different...

PS. this book is written in English, while all other editions in foreign languages (German, French etc) are translated from Boxall English to German, French, Chinese etc.

So Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is not in this updated 2018 version? If it is not then I think that one should not be included.

We do not have either of Tatjana's books on our combined list are we happy to add this in?
I am laughing as I have read both of them already they were both Booker/Booker International books and you know me LOL

I checked the source and the two were added, so I did add. 1Q94 was removed and Happy was removed. The one I am not sure of because I see no reason why it should have been added is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This is as old book, written by a woman but beyond that, I see no literary merit to move it to the list above other US women authors.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is in both 2018 editions on page 305. I think it was added in one of the 2012 edition.
Looks like this thread (/topic/show/...) about Gentlemen Prefer Blondes provides the definitive answer to the question. In short, it should be added to our list (now moving to 1316 books).

Thankyou <3

It's how John did it at the time. If it bothers you, just ignore the first 11 books.
