Janice (jamasc) | 58953 comments Tell us what you are reading and why. Is it a challenge read? Is it "just because"?

message 2: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Dec 31, 2018 08:38PM) (new)

Kristie | 18703 comments I'm going to be starting the year with Us Against You for the yearly challenge and finishing Sold on a Monday for a review, which I just didn't get around to finishing in 2018.

message 3: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm trying to finish out A Map of Days for my last library book of 2018. It is a great story, so far. I love the old photos and the peculiars.

message 4: by Lisa (last edited Jan 01, 2019 01:11AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have just finished The Shadowy Horses. I gave it 3 stars but my actual rating would be 3.5 stars.

I'm hoping to get 2019 off to a flying start by reading Child of the Prophecy. It's a "just because" read. I love this series so far and can't wait to get back to it.

message 5: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11084 comments I am in the last pages of Hollow City. I couldn't finish it before the new year's start, but I will still count it as read in 2018. It would be unfair to count all the pages in this year's challenge.

message 6: by Cherie (last edited Jan 07, 2019 02:22PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I didn't quite get it done before the clock ticked over into 2019 but I finished A Map of Days by Ransom Riggs. I was reading it "just because". It was an orphan book for me, as I had killed Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children as a trilogy. Who knew, but the author, that it would make a comeback? It was a great read!

I'm hoping that the All Souls Trilogy author (Deborah Harkness) can give us an exciting new story to her trilogy. I'm looking forward to reading it!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15864 comments My first book of 2019 will be Maisie Dobbs, which I'm reading for the group read and the year long challenge. I will start it soon, but am not sure if I'll be able to keep my eyes open once I sink down on the couch and start reading..

message 8: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I am reading oHard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

I thought I had read it. I was wrong. I am loving it. This iis becoming one of my favorite authors.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 58953 comments I marked Kill the Dead as dnf. I started it on Dec 29th, and wasn't enjoying it. I'll not bother with killing any more in the Sandman Series. There are too many other series that interest me more.

I will start off the new year with Becoming and The Little Paris Bookshop. Both are for the Movie Mania challenge. The second is the group themed read as well. Since I'm leading that discussion, I wanted to get started on it right away.

I love that book. We read it as a buddy read a few years back. Do check out the thread. We had some good discussions.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments I will be starting the year with Ninefox Gambit for the yearly challenge. I will also be restarting Anxious and The Self Illusion: Why There is No 'You' Inside Your Head Extract , my non fiction reads. I had barely started them and they'll fit a couple of the yearly challenge tasks.

message 12: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments I started my year with And Then There Were None for the monthly challenge :)

message 13: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I'm starting out the year with The Little Paris Bookshop for the January group read and A Drink Before the War for a buddy read.

Also, I got a Blind Date with a Book for Christmas, and I've started reading that. It's (view spoiler), and I think I can use it for the set in Australia task for the yearly challenge. Plus, it's short so I can fit it around my other books.

message 14: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma We know there is A Rule Against Murder, but one takes place anyway in Louise Penny's picturesque Quebec. I am not alone in loving Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Penny's delicious, atmospheric writing. (aka The Murder Stone)

That's another series I want to get back to.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Fiona wrote: "I started my year with And Then There Were None for the monthly challenge :)"

I think that was my first introduction to Agatha Christie, Fiona. I used the book for a monthly challenge, or maybe it was a group read.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am reading Time's Convert and A Drink Before the War, both for the yearly challenge and the latter for the Kinzie and Gennaro series buddy read.

I am looking forward to getting back to the Louise Penny series too. I read the first book last year.

Hands down Louise Penny has got to be one of the best mystery series writer - love her characters, especially Armand Gamache of course! read the most recent one around Christmas.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Paragon Walk I am revsiitng Anne Perry. I love her chars. I am starting with the older books

message 20: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I finished my Blind Date with a Book just in time for the New Year's party. If I hadn't had a place in the yearly challenge for it, or if it had been longer, I probably wouldn't have finished it at all. It was really strange and didn't have a great ending. Oh well, like a normal blind date I guess; you win some you lose some.

message 22: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11084 comments I finished yesterday Between Shades of Gray for the monthly challenge. It was a solid 4 stars. A story emotionally powerful.

I am starting now Older Brother for the YLTO party.

I'm in the same situation. Getting antsy!

message 32: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments I decided now wasn't the time for Ninefox Gambit. I was a bit confused so switched it out for City of Stairs for the monthly challenge. I also started Sleeping Giants for the ylto party.

message 33: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Both Christmas and post-WWI France feature in Aussie author Jackie French’s novella With Love from Miss Lily: A Christmas Story. Not so much sugar and spice - more like Spanish Flu and a surprising bit of intrigue!
With Love from Miss Lily A Christmas Story (Miss Lily's Lovely Ladies) by Jackie French 3.5&²µ³Ù;4â˜ /review/show...

I became very fond of “reincarnated Virgil Wander and the varied characters in Leif Enger’s excellent new novel.

Me too.

message 35: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11429 comments Finished Conversations with Friends to kick of my 2019 mm challenge.

I was prepared to hate this tale of Dublin millennials (live book club choice) but it surprised me into liking it! It was a story of shifting relationships and brought me back to my early 20's when I grew up in a very different Ireland. 3.5 stars - it grew a tad self indulgent towards the end!

message 37: by Barbie (new)

Barbie I reading two books now.
First: Skyward
This is such a good book, but sci-fi is not my genre. I'm reading very slowly, because it has too much technical information. :D Even if it is a YA.

So I started a second book, if my brain is tired, I switched to The Undomestic Goddess.
I love Sophie Kinsella, she writes very funny, light books. :)

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments I finished Sleeping Giants for the party and movie challenge. Now back to (although i never actually started it) City of Stairs for the monthly challenge.

message 39: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I didn't get my book finished during the party, but I did finish it today. Moloka'i was great. Now, think I'm going to start Educated for the movie challenge. I've been thinking of reading it for a while, but I'm kind of afraid I'm not going to like it. Oh well. Here goes nothing.

message 40: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My actual first book read for the year was If You Take a Mouse to the Movies - to kick off my yearly challenge.

Not counting the one above, my first book finished for 2019 was Maisie Dobbs for the YLTO party this weekend. I am still planning to participate in the group discussion. I am also currently reading Verses for the Dead - just because - although it might fit the yearly challenge. I won't know until I finish if I can use it somewhere, Time's Convert - yearly challenge - it is awesome - any of the All Souls readers will love it!, A Drink Before the War - buddy read and yearly challenge, and Gideon's Corpse - I worked it into my yearly challenge list, but initially, it was going to be a just because series book.

message 44: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2765 comments I'm reading The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother and All You Can Ever Know: A Memoir - funny how all my 2019 reads so far are slotting into the yearly challenge :-)

message 45: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11084 comments I posted this in the wrong thread yesterday so here I go again. :)

I am reading A Free Man of Color, although I haven't read more than a few pages. I wanted to read something by Barbara Hambly, and this series in particular was highly recommended to me.

PattyMacDotComma Elizabethan history and mystery is such good, page-turning fun in A Famine of Horses, the first in a series by P.F. Chisholm. Looking forward to some more buckling of swashes!
