To make a long story short, I have tried several times to finish this first book, I am determined to finish it now.

The good: Martin is a good writer, I will grant him that.
The bad: The violence, the perversion, the cruelty to women, and the overall bleakness is overwhelming. There is no chance to just relax and enjoy a good story. It would have been better, if Martin had toned down all the above negatives.

Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, so it pains me to not like this as much as I wish I could.

Sorry for going on this long.
If I may relate an encounter I had with Brandon Sanderson (one of my favorite contemporary Fantasy author). He spoke at a book signing, at a nearby bookstore. He said that when he was newly published, the editors encourage him to write more like Martin. When Sanderson signed my book, I had the opportunity to tell him that I was glad he wasn't like Martin, and to keep writing his way.

I did not watch the series.

I agree Martin's books are not relaxing and enjoying a good story. Books 1-3 are more action packed (considered the favorites) while 4 and 5 "drag" more. I think they were interesting in you get a lot more lore and history and I guess some people don't want to read about that.
They are a feat so I can see why it's taking you multiple times to get through it. By book 5 I was pushing myself.

I'm glad the show is over and I can move on to something else in my limited tv viewing. (Planning to finish Peaky Blinders and Luther.)

I'm glad you brought up Sanderson. When I see one of his books come up as a suggestion I want to read it but I guess I feel they can be daunting.

Any suggestions for a good starting point with his books?

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Excellent question.

Sanderson has several series going, and I have read most of them. Two of my favorite books are The Way of Kings and Skyward (which leans more toward YA). Skyward is only a little over 500 pages, as opposed to 1,000 for Way of Kings. I become so immersed in Sanderson's world that they do don't feel long at all.

Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set is also great, I started with these, There is actually 2nd series in the Mistborn world, which is very good, but not as good as the Stormlight Archive series (of which Way of Kings is the first book in the series).

Another one you can start with is Warbreaker.

I would start with Skyward or Warbreaker to get your feet wet.

Surprisingly well for me. I've recently finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (audiobook) and The Rose & the Dagger. I'm kinda hoping to finish All For One by the end of the month, but I kind of doubt it.

I agree, though I kept forgetting I was participating in this lol. But I set up an alarm to update so I think that'll help me.

I'd love to have a thread like this every month.

Wow, I did not realize how involved some of these series are!
After looking at some of these I think I'm going to follow in your footsteps and start with the Mistborn trilogy. They sound the most interesting and I can do three books and not feel overwhelmed.

Thank you for the recommendations!

If you end up reading them let me know how you like them. I just love how his fantasy and science fiction are so different from the norm. They are not typical classic high fantasy. His magic systems are really different and interesting.
