Hello Hello!!

And welcome to WAT IV, also known as Wheel-o'-Brown. I hope you're all as excited as I am to dive into Cat's crazy creation :-)

Please share the link to your WAT shelf once you swing by this thread, thank you!

As per usual, please read the rules carefully, and if you have questions, feel free to ask in this thread and we'll do our best to help you.

If you are new to team challenges, don't fret! It always looks scarier and more complicated than it actually is.

Most importantly: have fun!!

Now go raid your bookshelves and see what you can find to cover our weekly genres :-)

Kristel | 287 comments Hi all!

Super excited to take part in this year's WaT. Hopefully, it's going to be as fun as last time:)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments This is mine:

/review/list...

I signed up for only one a week, and won't manage some of the genres, but at least they should all be 500+ (I've an 800+ I'm desperate to dive into, so hopefully will do that the first week if it fits!).

message 13: by Eldarwen (new)

These are the various possibilities we can get, depending on the word that is spun for us each week:

Word Genre
Beige Adventure
Brown Space Opera
Chocolate Classics
Cinnamon LGBT
Coffee Suspense
Sand Horror
Terracotta Memoir
Umber Shifters
Walnut New Adult

Which ones are your preferred genres? Which ones do you absolutely dislike?

Personally, I'm not a fan of Memoirs, or non fiction in general. But that's about the only thing I'll keep my hands away from if at all possible.

Space Opera strikes me as a little more difficult to find in the books I usually read, but I've been extremely surprised by tags before. People do the oddest tags sometimes haha. Everything else... I'm game! I even have a few options already for some of these so we'll see what the wheel will bring :-)

Niiice!
Big books are awesome :-)

Which one is it you're waiting to dive into?

Memoir and shifters are probably going to be the toughest for me. I tend to not gravitate towards these books.

message 16: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Servant of the Empire. Genre-wise it will only fit Adventure, but I can make it fit any of the letters! :D

Genres I dislike: New Adult!!! (and therefore shifters, as they are largely in that category. as I'm limited to what I currently own, this could make fitting those tricky. (even though I have around 2000 books to choose from, LOL!)
LGBT also not a favourite, as I've just re-read the only books I own that would fall in that bracket that I can think of. (they were all 800+ too, d'oh!)

Favourites are probably adventure, classics, and I guess horror as I'm on a mission to re-read all of King's back-catalogue. Some nice big chunky ones to be found there too, lol.
Space opera is probably do-able too.

I could probably manage memoirs and suspense, but I reserve the right to grumble about it, teehee!

❶İձ❶ (ttea) | 9614 comments Hello!

shelf: wheels-iv

Genres: Memoirs and horror are out for me. Unless I manage to find some vanilla ones :P
I'll read new adult if I really have to but there might be some complaining :P

I might have couple space-operas on waiting to be read (they take place in space so I'm counting on that tag as I didn't check them yet). So far I never find them working for challenges (and I first read a book then try to fit it into the challenge )

message 18: by Sammy (last edited Jun 11, 2019 12:11PM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Oh, and after I finish Servant of the Empire, I'll probably want to re-read Mistress of the Empire for the week after if possible, lol. (again fits adventure genre)

message 19: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Stop press! I have located a trilogy of shifter books on one of my shelves! Oddly enough by the author that wrote the only lgbt books I have, lol. These ones are classed as adult fiction though. I'm determined to stay clear of YA for a considerable time! :D

message 20: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 12882 comments Mod
Ooh yes, lots of vanilla horror out there, Tea! The Sookie Stackhouse series for instance. I think most if not all of those books are tagged horror when they really aren't.

Supernatural Horror

A sentiment I can understand and regularly relate to ;-)
What is the name of that trilogy?

(You know, I think it'll be easier if you just add that info next time. I'm pretty sure one of us will always ask for title/author hehe.)

message 22: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments The agents of Hel by Jacqueline Carey.

And pretty much everything else she's ever written falls under the LGBT bracket. (The Kushiel books are among my all-time favourites)

Hehe, very true.

Also, most King is classed as horror, even the ones that aren't ;)

Ah yes! I always forget about those. I've had Kushiel's Dart on my shelf for years already but never actually picked it up to read it.

You'll either love it, or hate it. I'm in the former category, even if I don't share the protagonist's proclivities, lol.

Also, I don't suppose "opera" will count as a shelf (for an obviously sci-fi, and therefore short for space-opera), will it?

I don't care. I have bad experience with King as a kid - picked something I thought was innocent and haven't slept for weeks after that :P I'm staying away from King just in case :)

I do know that non-horror books often have that tag (I remember that for another challenge I've read And Then There Were None for horror). I don't usually go in search of that tag in books I'm reading as I go with assumption I'm not reading horror book. But know books E mentioned and I think I could check few more like that

Nope, sorry. It needs to be the exact same shelf name. The only deviation that is allowed is plural/singular.

Awww, so sorry that put you off!

I started reading his stuff at 7, thanks to my dad. Consequently nothing much scares me in books anymore, lol.

Mmhh, it's definitely worth double checking the tags sometimes! You'd be surprised! And I wouldn't have considered Agatha Christie to write horror either.

Which was the Stephen King book that gave you nightmares?

I've always had trouble getting into his writing style because it was soooo long-winded, but I picked up Dolores Claiborne a while later and absolutely loved it. Then never read another King book again haha. I do have Pet Sematary ready to go though in a German hardcover edition that I begged my dad to buy for me about 20 years ago and I never actually read it o.O

Thought as much, just my luck the book I wanted to read has lazy taggers, lol!

Not sure about title. Something with picture and bull. I think

And please keep in mind I was barely teen then. I picked it up from my grandmom (without her figuring out) because it had pretty cover. Yeah, I was falling for that one even then :P
And even as it was scaring me I couldn't put it down. I believe I finished it, but I kinda blocked that one.

On that note:

Our first word is: COFFEE

Genre required (10 books maximum): SUSPENSE

message 39: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Struggling to find suspense books that also fit the letter requirements. Have an agatha Christie, but it's a tiny one. would get more points for reading an 800+ outside the genre :)

message 40: by ❶İձ❶ (new)

❶İձ❶ (ttea) | 9614 comments Maybe you did it on purpose as people never read rules :P

What is better - to go for pages or for more letters? Just to know how big books I should look for. :)

I have something suspense-ish for each letter, but at first glance (without reading it), each book goes for only one letter.

❶İձ❶ (ttea) | 9614 comments Sammy, if you cover horror for me, I can do suspense, shifters, lgbt for you. We only need certain number of books tagged :)
I won't promise on space-opera as those can be slowish reads

message 43: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Ohhhh, never mind. Four Past Midnight, 900+ pages, the letter "F", and listed as suspense.

That's me sorted! lol.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments And on that note, I'm off to finish the *%$ YA book I'm currently reading for RSU. Looking forward to seeing the back of it!

I'll check in again before bed to see if we have such a thing as a strategy. Just assume I'll (mostly) do as I'm told, lol.

message 47: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 12882 comments Mod
Honestly, I never know if it's better to read more average books or bigger books.

If you read an 801+ page book, you get 100 points.

If you read two 401+ books, you get 80 points, so...

But we can read up to 10 books with the genre, and we need to cover all the letters at least once to get the completion bonus. That's something to consider or longer words. Coffee will be easily doable even if each of us only read one enormous book a week.

Matched is not so bad! Once you get past the YA aspect haha. But really, it's one of the decent dystopia trilogies out there. ;-)

message 49: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12356 comments Because I only signed up for one a week, it makes sense for me to try and aim for 800+ if I can ;)
