[[ Frankie ]] (freedbyfiction) | 536 comments Ugh - me, too! Sooo jealous! It does sound so beautiful! I’m gonna have to go find a copy at B&N or something, just to check out its beauty. LOL.

I’m reading the Kindle edition. Loving it so far, though!

Ozana Ozzy (barbozzy) | 1018 comments Gideon is so funny. Love the book so far.

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I'm gonna switch to majority audio for The Pillars of the Earth. I like it so far but I don't think I'll be able to get through the print ed quickly enough, and it'll slow me down too much re reading other stuff. Library has audio hold available now, and cover is still brown (even more brown!!!). :D
Note to Self: default ed is 973 pgs

message 404: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I decided to go ahead and get the ebook version of Gideon the Ninth. Because I was having issues following the audio version.

message 405: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Alysa, the audios for Pillars of the Earth are so good!

Jessi, I am having trouble following the audio of Gideon also but I don't have any other options so I'm just going to middle through.

message 406: by Joanne (new)

Joanne *muddle*

message 407: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Joanne, I really contemplated just muddling through it but I think Gideon is so funny and I felt like I was missing too much of the awesome wit and the writing style so I went ahead and bought the book.

message 408: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I cannot imagine attempting to do audio of Gideon, really.
This is a book that would definitely not be its best in that format.

It's making me feel a little bad for the author, frankly, that so many people (now that Audibooks have become such a Big Thing) are going to come away with a negative impression.

I have about 6 chapters to go. Got some RL commitments this evening, but will finish it after, or in the morning.
I had BETTER, since the digital loan will expire tomorrow and I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY AT WHAT TIME! Yikes.

message 409: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I don't mind audios and I try to be really fair on my ratings but sometimes the narrators are just so bad you can't. The narrator for Gideon is actually quite good but the problem is the story itself is just a bit complicated and the author doesn't throw a whole lot of details out at first so that confuses it even more. Not a great book for the audio format. Which is why I switched. I want to enjoy this book more!

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Just saw that wren put a book on the planning spreadsheet as "Brown Cover according to TinEye." The edition does indeed have a brown cover, but...

FYI ALL:
The Mods decided in Caps Group that we are not actually using TinEye!
* We are using eyeballs and common sense. Ask your team if you're not sure about color.
* If we're still not sure, caps can ask in Caps Group for additional votes.
* TinEye and all mention of it have been banned from TT VII.

I am pretty sure Jessi posted about this here last week, after the issue with Dark Age as yellow VS brown, but, well, here it is now :D

message 411: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1408 comments Had to read a little book for another challenge, added it to the spreadsheet for a puny few points. :D

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1314 comments Do graphic novels count? I can’t remember...

message 414: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments No we can't use graphic novels in this challenge

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1314 comments Okie dokie

message 416: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I'm really enjoying Gideon, but I can definitely see how it might be less enjoyable in audiobook format. I find myself flipping back and re-reading some things to keep everything straight in my head. I also like that the chapters in the physical book have skulls/house symbols next to them that seem to represent which House Gideon will be interacting with the most in that chapter. The little details in this book are great!

message 417: by [[ Frankie ]] (new)

[[ Frankie ]] (freedbyfiction) | 536 comments I finally got my DQ’s up for today for Gideon. I’m not enjoying it quite as much as I’d hoped. It really is such a unique & creative plot, but I’m finding myself not liking the execution very much. I do like Gideon, as a character, she is funny & witty & a smart ass - so I love that part. But I’m having a hard time getting invested in the story. I’m hoping it picks up soon!

message 418: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I just posted my answers to your DQs :)

I only have like 30something pages left of the book, so I will definitely finish it tonight before I go to sleep!

message 419: by [[ Frankie ]] (new)

[[ Frankie ]] (freedbyfiction) | 536 comments I’m kinda struggling through it. But I shall persevere! LOL.

message 420: by [[ Frankie ]] (last edited Oct 08, 2019 11:28PM) (new)

[[ Frankie ]] (freedbyfiction) | 536 comments I think I’ve decided to read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) by Becky Chambers too, since some friends of mine are buddy reading it & it works for a sin bingo for our sin - if it enrages me somehow. Which I’m sure it will, since I’m not a fan of space opera. ;p

Guess we’ll see!

message 421: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Finished Gideon after midnight so I’ll put 9 Oct as the read date :)
Not giving it a star rating yet, as I need to think about it some more. 🧐

message 422: by Jessi (new)

message 423: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Yay!!!
So funny, I just mentioned The Addams Family in the BOM discussion, and then you finding that GIF.
LOVE.

I feel like we're behind in our minimum reading, but I ALWAYS get like that on Wednesdays during team challenges, and then everybody else proves I'm just paranoid, by having big reading binges on Saturdays, lol.

message 424: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I have faith that we will get there lol. I think some of the bigger books are slowing us down a bit but the points for those are excellent! It may seem like I'm behind but I'm reading 3 books at the same time because I'm just crazy so will most likely finish all of mine around the same time!

I love the Addams Family and thought it was appropriate for a Wednesday in October!!

message 425: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1408 comments Same Jessi. I'm reading a bunch of big books and I'll probably finish them all on the same day this weekend. But I will finish my 6-7 books I promise. :D

message 426: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I need everybody's opinion:

I was planning to read the following book this week, for Envy (top shelf: young adult):
Vardaesia (The Medoran Chronicles, #5) by Lynette Noni

but I am considering reading this one instead:
Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy, #5) by Richelle Mead

For the latter, it would also be for Envy (top shelf: young adult), unless everybody thinks it's green enough to use for Color Cover?

(Grrr, if I could track down a copy of the HC version at the library, it is like so Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy, #5) by Richelle Mead , which would be a Wrath Brown Cover instead, but A) I don't know if I can get it in time, and B) based on the other editions with that cover image, it might actually not be that brown, but more pink.

Should I risk looking for the HC version?
Is the green one green enough for Color Cover?

*head hurts*

message 427: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I think it's green enough and I also think the HC edition is brown. Up to you on which edition you go with! Would be nice to have another Wrath book in the tower!

message 428: by Allison Ann (last edited Oct 19, 2019 12:52PM) (new)

Allison Ann | 1408 comments I'm probably worse than the site that cannot be named, but honestly none of those covers look 50% of any valid colour to me. This is why I usually go with another option. :D

message 429: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments (@ Jessi, LOL to your GIF ;D)

Apparently there's only a different paperback at the public library, and its checked out until the end of the month. And also might not be brown.
So Green it shall be! At least it's A color cover and not just ...

WAIT A SEC, it is a SIN BINGO! Green, YA, read by Cecily from Team Invidia in 2019!
SCORE!

message 430: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I thought it was funny lol

Well I'm not gonna complain about a Sin Bingo!! **Does a Happy Dance**

I'm thinking of reading that book, too! I've heard a lot of good things about it and I'm in the mood for some sci-fi. And the brown cover certainly doesn't hurt ;)

We’ll have a Wrath book in the Tower when I finish The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! Woo! (& possibly a sin bingo since it’s also Space Opera.)

Has anyone read that book, by the way? If so, how was it?

We were both typing about that book at the same time! LOL. Jinx. :]

message 434: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I'm also thinking of reading Slay by Brittney Morris , which would work for Envy as it's YA. I'm gonna try and find some cover color matches for next week.

Now off to answer some DQs!

Lol, nice! Have you started reading it yet?

message 436: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I'm nearly done with a short book that I originally thought I could squeeze in for Lava but my Interlibrary Loan quite didn't arrive in time.
The House (Blackwater, #3) by Michael McDowell

Anyone else ever heard of this series? It's pretty great if you like Southern Gothic.

Also went ahead and started Spirit Bound, green cover. I should have a lot of reading time tonight to read a bunch more of it.

I won't be online all that much between this afternoon and Sunday night. Family road trip!

message 437: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Nice! I have not heard of it but I don't read a whole lot of Southern Gothic. Maybe I should try it out, no?

message 438: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1314 comments I finished Under the Table by Stephanie Evanovich and Beautiful Bitch (Beautiful Bastard, #1.5) by Christina Lauren yesterday and today. I'm not sure if they meet any requirements but I'll tag them to my shelf.

message 439: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1314 comments Beautiful Bitch (Beautiful Bastard, #1.5) by Christina Lauren = 160 Pages

Under the Table by Stephanie Evanovich = 336 Pages

Awesome!

message 441: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments @Alysa, what do you think of the above covers? Enough pink? I'm leaning towards yes. The second one looks blue to me but I realize that's one of those colors that some may see it as green.

message 442: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments The Evanovich is most definitely blue, like a nice sky blue.
The other one... not sure it's enough pink. We can use it for Contemporary instead. Or.. maybe something in it made Suzanne wrathful/enraged? ;)

I just finished my short book too. About to go shelve it.

The characters are enraged because they had flight delays to paris. Does that count lol?

message 444: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Haha, it has to be YOU who is enraged by something in the book.
Anything work?

Also a question: do you have the correct editions shelved? If you did audio, for example, you are supposed to shelve the audio.
(Then we just put the page count of the "default" edition in the spreadsheet)

I like Southern Gothic, I'll have to add them to my TBR.

My opinion - yes on enough blue, no on enough pink. :D

message 446: by Alysa (last edited Oct 10, 2019 10:25AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments @Suzanne, another question:
Ah, when did you actually start reading Under the Table by Stephanie Evanovich ?
On your shelf it has a start date of 3 Oct, which means we cannot use it. Challenge started on 7 Oct AEST.
:/

ETA: Can you check dates on your other book too? You don't have a start date except for in 2016.

message 447: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1408 comments Bleak House by Charles Dickens is the closest cover I can find to what I'm reading. My physical cover looks more blue, but this picture looks green to me. So can we get a ruling on what I should mark it as. Should be done tonight. :)

message 448: by Alysa (last edited Oct 10, 2019 10:52AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments So... about that...
The Mods have just decided, after much abuse of the "what color is this?" voting system in Caps Group, that we're not allowed to bring Color Cover questions to the whole Caps Group anymore as of the end of Week 1.

If we can't come to an easy consensus within our own teams (or possibly making a deal with like one other team), we can't use a book for color cover.

I don't know if Jessi agrees with me, but I'm on record with the opinion that Allison's book is a prime example of exactly the sort of "in-between" aqua/cyan/teal/turquoise color that nobody should be using for color cover criteria. Not even Wikipedia defines this shade as specifically blue or green, and neither should we. Causes too many arguments.

Therefore, @Allison: Can you come up with some sin specification ideas instead? Anything enrage you, for example? ;D

message 449: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1408 comments Absolutely. I picked it up because it is obviously blue (to me) in real life, but when I went looking on GR, this was the closest I could come to the cover. I will put it for Gluttony (over 600 pages).

message 450: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Great, thanks! If Jessi wants us to grow the Wrath Tower it'd be great if there's also something enraging in there, but don't sweat it if there isn't.
