Ilona | 4698 comments TBR JAR CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020

The TBR Jar challenge was the big winner of our 2020 Challenge Poll, so we are bringing it back! There are three ways to pick the book titles you’ll be reading for this challenge:

You can use books for a specific challenge, or books on a specific list.
Some examples are:
(Add a twist to another challenge our group offers)
(A challenge that our group does not offer)
1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (Or another of the many Listopia lists)

You can let ŷ choose your books for this challenge.
Step 1: Select the number of books you want to read for this challenge.
Step 2: Go to the “My Books tab on the top of the ŷ Page.
Step 3: Bring up your “Want-To-Read shelf.
Step 4: On the bottom of the page in the middle, go to the “sort field and select “Random.
ŷ will generate a random list of books for you!

You can use the following tasks and pick a matching book later.
1. Read the book that has been on your TBR list the longest.
2. Read a book you added to your TBR within the last year.
3. Read the book with the most pages on your TBR or one that is over 500 pages.
4. Read the book with the least number of pages on your TBR or one that is under 100 pages.
5. Read a book that is published the year or decade you were born.
6. Read a book the 20th book on any page of your TBR.
7. Read a book that has an average rating of 3.8 or higher.
8. Read a book by one of your favorite authors.
9. Read a book that you added based on the review of another ŷ user.
10. Read a book with a cover you love.
11. Read a book with an animal or plant on the cover.
12. Randomize your TBR and read the first book.
13. Read a book the contains the initials of your name (in any order) in the title or author name.
14. Look at the number of pages of books in your Want-To-Read folder. Read the book that is that same number. (e.g., if you have 20 pages of books in your Want-To-Read folder, read book number 20 from your list).
15. Read a book that helps you complete two or more other yearly or quarterly challenges.
16. Read the book with the most number of ratings (i.e., not the actual average rating, but the number of people who have rated it).
17. Read the book with the least number of ratings.
18. Read the first book from your list that "sparks joy" as soon as you think about reading it.
19. Read a book that you have added to at least one other shelf.
20. Read a book that you own.
21. Read a book that an IRL (in real life) friend, family member, or acquaintance has recommended to you.
22. Read a book that you feel you "should" read.
23. Read a book you previously DNFed and still want to finish.
24. Read a book in your favorite genre or format.
25. Read a book that is from a genre or format you rarely read.
26. Sort your TBR by cover. Read the first or last book.
27. Sort your TBR by title. Read a book from the middle page.
28. Read a hyped, bestseller, or award-winning book.
29. Read a book with a title that contains punctuation.
30. Read a book related to the yearly, quarterly, or monthly theme.
31. Read a book that is featured as a group or buddy read and was already on your TBR.
32. Read a book that is retelling or reimagining of a classic story or the classic itself.

Write all your selected book titles or tasks on slips of paper, throw them in a jar, and shake! Just let us know how many books you will be reading for this challenge.

We love how creative you all are, and would love to see the pictures of your jars!
Happy Reading!

Ilona | 4698 comments How to Participate

1. Post here telling the Challenge Leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active. You must choose a goal for the challenge.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.
Please be sure to post the number of books you have completed every time you post an update. The Challenge Leader is not able to keep track for you because of the number of participants in the challenge.

3. Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the Challenge Leader knows to go look at your original post. In this case, please indicate your progress before you list your books. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

Example:
message 32 updated! 2/25 books read!

For more information about how challenges work, check out this thread or ask your challenge leader.

PS. Please do not delete posts! It makes updating very confusing for the Moderators! If you decide to leave the challenge, please just let us know. You can edit your original post to say {redacted}. Thank you!

Ilona | 4698 comments I wrote 33 book titles on slips of paper: books that I own physical copies of, but have never read. It's a twist on the Clear the Shelves challenge!
I am hoping to read at least 10 this year.

Here is a picture of my cute little jar:

1/10

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

Fr. Andrew (nitesead) I will read 20 books from this list. 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

Main list: (if two are listed, that's because there was a tie in the list. I used a random number generator...when I pull that number I'll pick at that time which I prefer to read...hope that's okay...if not please let me know.)

because most of these were new to me and not on my TBR list, I did use veto power, so some of the random numbers were recast.

1. Fools of Fortune by William Trevor (ordered)
2. A Woman's Life by Guy de Maupassant (own on kindle)
3. Kieron Smith, Boy by James Kelman (library) OR The Guide by R.K. Narayen (buy - book or kindle)
4. Antic Hay by Aldous Huxley (library e-audio)
5. Simon and the Oaks by Marianne Frederickson (ordered)
6. Stone Junction by Jim Dodge (ordered)
7. Nemesis by Philip Roth (library) OR The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt (library e-audio)
8. Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille (ordered)
9. Garden, Ashes by Danilo Kis (buy) OR The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan (library)
10. Myra Breckinridge by Gore Vidal (buy) OR Memoirs of a Peasant Boy by Xose Neira Vilas (own on kindle) OR Like Life by Lorrie Moore (buy)
11. Martin Eden by Jack London (library e-audio)
12. The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood (library e-audio)
13. The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham (library e-audio)
14. Youth by J.M. Coatzee (library...read boyhood first?)
15. So Long a Letter by Mariama Ba (buy)
16. Troubles by J.G. Ferrell (buy) (might need to replace with another)
17. The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro (library e-audio)
18. The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark (currently reading)
19. Blindness by Henry Green (ordered)
20. The Sea by John Banville (library e-audio)

I also used the same random number generator to get a list of alternates. I have some trouble with attention span stuff so if a book becomes a "not gonna happen" book because of overly dense writing or length, I'll use a second jar and pull one of these books out of it and read it instead.

1. Impressions of Africa by Raymond Roussel (buy)
2. Black Dogs by Ian McEwen (library)
3. The Golden Ass translated by Jack Lindsay (buy)
4. Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse (buy)
5. God's Bits of Wood by Sembene Ousmane (buy)
6. Albert Angelo by B.S. Johnson (buy)
7. Gösta Berling's Saga by Selma Lagerlöf (buy)
8. The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall (own on kindle)
9. Time's Arrow by Martin Amis (library)
10. Thaïs by Anatole France (own on kindle)

I'll change these to link to the actual books as I progress. Thanks!

I am going to shoot for 5 books because I tend to get WAY too overzealous on challenges sometimes. I guess I can’t help myself because they all look SO fun. I will choose my books based on the list of tasks provided.

Goal: 5 ; Progress: 0/5

1. Read the book that has been on your TBR list the longest.
2. Read a book with a cover you love.
3. Read a book that helps you complete two or more other yearly or quarterly challenges.
4. Read a book that you own.
5. Read a book that is featured as a group or buddy read and was already on your TBR.

Beverly (zippymom) | 1479 comments I am so glad we're doing this challenge again this year! I really enjoyed reading my randomly selected books. I have 40 slips in my jar so as to give more than 20 books a chance to be picked but didn't feel like writing down all unread books I own or buying a really huge jar. And as you can see, every book fits task 19 & 20 because of how I sort my books and how I understand my tbr shelf (it only contains books I own in an unread state). Also, I've decided to put in 2019's unfinished books for task 23.
