Spotted a good deal at Kindle that could be of interest to other Reading the 20th Century group members? Please share the good news here.

This is not a thread for author's to promote their own work. We have a separate thread for that...

Three Sisters, Three Queens

by

Philippa Gregory

is 99 pence in the UK today

Has anyone read it?
Is it any good?

I'm vaguely intrigued

When Katherine of Aragón is brought to the Tudor court as a young bride, the oldest princess, Margaret, takes her measure. With one look, each knows the other for a rival, an ally, a pawn, destined—with Margaret’s younger sister Mary—to a sisterhood unique in all the world. The three sisters will become the queens of England, Scotland, and France.

United by family loyalties and affections, the three queens find themselves set against each other. Katherine commands an army against Margaret and kills her husband James IV of Scotland. But Margaret’s boy becomes heir to the Tudor throne when Katherine loses her son. Mary steals the widowed Margaret’s proposed husband, but when Mary is widowed it is her secret marriage for love that is the envy of the others. As they experience betrayals, dangers, loss, and passion, the three sisters find that the only constant in their perilous lives is their special bond, more powerful than any man, even a king

Philippa Gregory's earlier novels are good, but I am less keen on later ones. I haven't read that one.

Nigeyb, I've only read one by Philippa Gregory, The Virgin's Lover - I see that I noted at the time: "I was interested in the story of Elizabeth's romance with Leicester, but found the flowery writing style hard to take."

Here's my tenpenneth Ian - click the "view spoiler" link below....

(view spoiler)

I read A Kestrel for a Knave in November 2019

It's very short - but A Kestrel for a Knave (1968) by Barry Hines packs a huge emotional punch.

Here’s my review

5/5

Ian | 527 comments Like your spoiler Nigeyb - just about spot on I’d say.

Yeah, makes sense to me but just thought that the cinema was a bit abstract - but when you take into account his father (like you say) then it makes perfect sense. Fits in perfectly with the depressing state of affairs associated with Billy’s surroundings/society etc.
Very powerful.

Thanks for posting it Nige - informative, useful and, as ever, appreciated.

Rivers of London is good - I've read another one in the series too. I'm not sure I'd ever get round to reading the whole lot though with so many other competing attractions.

I'm pretty sure Backstage Passes: Life on the Wild Side with David Bowie was originally published many years ago now. I've never read it as it always seemed a bit of cash in. I may read it one of these fine days though. Thanks again for the the tip.
